1 RELIGION 121 Winter 2014 BOOK OF MORMON 1 Nephi-Alma 29 Religious Education at BYUH: The prophets teach that the study of religion must meet the same standards as other subjects taught at the university. Therefore, success in a religion class will come only through study and faith (DC 88:118) As a result; students are expected to demonstrate their understanding of the scriptures by successfully completing challenging assignments and exams. Student performance will be carefully measured to ensure grades that reflect achievement. Religious Education at BYU Hawaii offers a truly unique opportunity to learn through a diligent application of study and faith. LEARNING BY STUDY AND BY FAITH An answer we discover or obtain through the exercise of faith, typically, is retained for a lifetime (Elder David A. Bednar; Seek Learning by Faith, to CES religious educators, 2/3/06, ldsces.org) 1. But ye are commanded in all things to ask of God. Frogley, DC Instructor Emeritus Salt Lake City Institute of Religion Elder Frogley is a member the faculty of BYUH as a church service missionary assigned to the Department of Religion. His career spans 39 years including service in seminaries and institutes, neurophysiology instructor and a private practice as a chiropractic physician. He is also an author of several gospel works. His companion and sweetheart, Janet R. Frogley is the mother of eight and together they will soon have 18 grandchildren. She is a trained phonetics reading specialist and author of children s books. They recently returned from serving a French mission where they opened the country of Burundi, Africa to the church.

2 The Book of Mormon Elder Craig R. Frogley Required Texts: The Book of Mormon We will actively be studying, cross-referencing, etc. together in class. Book of Mormon Student Manual This is your commentary source as we explore and discover in class. You may use electronic versions of the scriptures and student manual on a phone or ipad. The sound must be turned off on both devices and they must be in airplane mode during class. A ringing phone in class must be turned in for the duration of the class. Absence of your scriptures will result in a loss of points on your daily quiz whether they are forgotten or lost due to loss of the phone. Please don t ask for exceptions. LEARNING INDICATORS Participation and Attendance 100 Writing: Journal and notes 100 Daily Review Quiz 5 points each x Unit Testing 20 points each x TOTAL 500 Extra Credit: BofM Research Papers - to be approved in advance by Elder F GRADING STANDARD A 93%-100% A- 90%-92% B+ 87%-89% B 83%-86% B- 80%-82% C+ 77%-79% C 73%-76% C- 70%-72% D+ 67%-69% D 63%-66% D- 60%-62% E below 60% Class Contract. To initiate class participation student must sign a contract of understanding. 2. Classroom Quiz. There will be a short quiz given each day to measure student understanding of the reading assignment for the day and the last periods materials. Each quiz (Factual Learning) has a possible value of 5-10 points. The quiz will be corrected in your group as a teaching opportunity and then your individual score will be the average of your group score including the 0 score for any absentees. If missed, your group may administer the quiz to you and your score will then be averaged in. 3. Unit Exams. Five exams will present 10 multiple-choice questions to measure understanding of the course content. Two short answer questions will be given to measure conceptual and application understanding of content. Each multiple-choice question is worth 1 points and each short answer is worth 5 points for a total possible of 20 points. If missed, these can be made up but a 20% penalty will be imposed. 4. Reading. Each student is required to READ and insight/question JOURNAL the assigned scripture sections. They are also to read the associated student manual chapters. Each student is required to take class notes. Journals and class notes will be reviewed for possible point value. Total possible points in this area equal Participation and Attendance. Each student will complete the participation report form (see attached) for a possible 100 points. The class attendance standard is 80% regardless of reason for absence. Students failing to meet the attendance standard will be subject to loss of points. 6.Extra Credit. Students may research and write on topics related to the Book of Mormon sections we study. The papers must be completed before 26 March. Possible points earned can augment and/or replace any other points except the daily quizzes.

5 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Participation is basic to enhanced learning. Every student in the class should participate on a regular basis by asking questions, contributing to a discussion and annotating 1 Nephi Alma 29. To measure your level of participation give yourself points in each of these areas.
