Choir practice takes place most Sundays right after worship. Join us and help prepare for a Christmas cantata! WORSHIP TEAM Chestnut Grove's worship team will be holding open mic nights from 6-8pm on the first Tuesday of each month. If you are interested in auditioning for the worship team or want to learn more about what we do please feel free to drop in. Opportunities for Children during worship Nursery is available for children under the age of 3 following the Children s Message. Children s Church is available for children ages 3 (potty-trained) and up! The children are learning age appropriate Bible lessons and songs and having a great time together! Page 1

3 OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE Homebound, Special Needs, & Our Honored Elders Contact List - Copies are available in the plastic rack in the Vestibule for those who wish to keep in contact with them. Forward updates, additions, or deletions to Pastor Hildebrand via (dhildebrand@susumc.org) or phone ( ). Cards of Caring A few seconds of your time can bring cheer to someone. Remember to look on the table outside of the Sanctuary for cards to sign. Nursing Home & In-home visits - If you would enjoy going along with Pastor Hildebrand to visit individuals in nursing homes or some of the homebound members of our congregation, please let Pastor Hildebrand or Carol Mowery know! Peter Thornburgh s Aluminum Tab Recycling Program - Another mission opportunity for Chestnut Grove to support is Peter s special project. The Ronald McDonald House of Hershey is collecting the aluminum tabs. The aluminum tabs are sold to a local recycling company; proceeds help with daily operating expenses at the House. The generous amount of tabs collected has been very beneficial to the House and the families, averaging $1,000 monthly just from these tiny tabs! Let s help Peter in this cause by collecting the tabs and placing them in the marked container in the back of the sanctuary. Let Peter know you are helping him with his cause! Children s Message - Would you like to share a lesson or a story with the children sometime? Why not volunteer to give the Children s Message some Sunday? If you need ideas, Pastor Hildebrand has resources to help you. The children would love to hear from you! Talk to Pastor Hildebrand to volunteer! 4 From the Pastor s Pen.... Greetings to all in the name of Jesus Christ our Savior and Redeemer, October was so busy and went so fast. We had The Day of Atonement service, our annual church conference and almost two weeks later a special church conference. We had a service where Candace and Kyra Gerber did a skit and one where Laurie Bush told her story with music. We had the Dillsburg Farmers Fair and apple peeling sessions for future pie baking. Blain Bargo did the message for a service so Pastor Hildebrand could go on vacation to Florida to see her parents. While all of that was happening we were working behind the scenes having meetings with key people to start the process for our big projects. I also started PLD classes given by Kraig Faust. I did a Live2Lead seminar and we restarted First Friday s. Coming up, there are many opportunities to serve. We need volunteers for children s Sunday School and volunteers to make pies and cookies. In November we will have the annual hanging of the greens, operation Christmas child box packing party, photos taken for the new directory. Erdene McClure, Delores Kirkland, Juanita Strouse, and Vernon Lerew are all well as they can be and miss their friends at Chestnut Grove. Please remember them over the holidays with cards and notes. Their addresses are in the directory. The choir is gearing up for the Christmas cantata and sounding really good! Thank you Laurie Bush! Dee Gerber will hold play practice on Sunday mornings at 9:30 for the children that will participate. The church building is being transformed and so is the body of Christ. My personal thanks to the wonderful leaders and teachers who continue to invest in us, to bring God glory. Special thanks to Sherry Spencer for leading the Word Way! My vacation in Florida was not only a welcomed time of refreshment but a chance to step away and reflect on the work we are doing together. I missed you all and thank those who took care of the house and Robert and Merv. I also thank those who took such good care of the work of the church and the daily details that can t be neglected. Those who visited the shut ins for me, got the mail, worked on projects, and especially those who prayed for all of us and what needs done. Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. As we serve one another, may God be glorified! 5 CHRISTMAS TEA The annual Christmas Tea will be held on Saturday, December 3 rd from 11:00 to 2:30. The worship team from Milton Hershey will provide the entertainment. The ladies need a head count to set the right number of tables, so please sign up in the lobby or rsvp to: HOLIDAY APPLE PIE FUNDRAISER We need your help to raise money to pay for a new roof. We have committed to this fundraiser, and possibly others, to demonstrate our commitment to paying for the roof. We are asking everyone to participate in this project in two ways. If you can help make pies, see Shirley Fetterolf to volunteer. We are all being asked to sell apple pies. There are sign-up sheets in the narthex for you to post in your place of business or use as you walk door-to-door, post on Facebook, whatever works. Questions and suggestions for marketing can be directed to Denise Newhard. HANGING OF THE GREENS Mark your calendar now and plan to join us at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 26 and help decorate the church for Advent and Christmas. Light refreshments will be provided so we can work and snack at the same time, which will help us to finish earlier. LADIES NIGHT OUT! Mark your calendar and plan to join the ladies when they have their next night out. They will be meeting at the Peppermill Restaurant at 6 PM on Thursday November 17. Invite a friend! Contact Sue Mowery if you have any questions. UPCOMING SPECIAL SERVICES Sunday, November 13th is homecoming. Invitations are being sent to past pastors and members we haven t seen in a while. Church relics will be displayed. We will also be blessing the OCC boxes. A Thanksgiving meal will be provided following the service. Page 5

6 Max Lucado wrote a prediction for November 9, and I am sharing parts of it here. The entire article can be found at if you would like to read it: We are really ready for this presidential election to be over. We re ready for an end to the rancor and tackiness. Voters on both sides feel frustrated, even embarrassed by it all. There is a visceral fear, an angst about the result. What if so and so wins? When we wake up to November 9, post-election, when the confetti is swept away and the election is finally over, what will we see? I have a prediction. I know exactly what November 9 will bring. Another day of God s perfect sovereignty. He will still be in charge. His throne will still be occupied. He will still manage the affairs of the world. Never before has His providence depended on a king, president, or ruler. And it won t on November 9, The LORD can control a king s mind as he controls a river; he can direct it as he pleases (Proverbs 21:1 NCV). Understanding God s sovereignty over the nations opens the door to peace. When we realize that God influences the hearts of all rulers, we can then choose to pray for them rather than fret about them. Rather than wring our hands we bend our knees, we select prayer over despair..circle November 9 on your calendar and write upon it the words: Our good God rules the world.
