3 Vestry News At the December meeting, the Vestry: Approved the 2017 St. James budget. This will be presented to the congregation at the annual meeting. Expressed our sincere thanks and appreciation for those members who are leaving the Vestry: Ken Iles, Werner Schmalz and Wendy Weber. Their contributions have been invaluable, and they have certainly made my job as Warden easier and more pleasant. Approved a slate of candidates for Warden and Vestry members to be presented at the Annual Meeting for your vote. This slate is comprised of: Pat Davis, Warden, and John Crossley, Terry Neil, and Randy Wilson, Vestry members. This is a very strong group of candidates, and we are pleased by the depth of experience and enthusiasm that each of these persons will bring to the Vestry. Received word that the Search Committee is in the process of on-campus interviews. We will hopefully have more detailed and interesting news by the annual meeting. We would like to encourage everyone to attend the annual meeting, which will be held on January 15th, immediately following the 9:30 service. Brunch will be served. This is your opportunity to play an important role in the operational functioning of the church as well as to learn about the important work that our myriad committees are doing, to hear more about the exciting happenings at St. James, and to enjoy warm fellowship with other parishioners. Since this is my last article as Warden, I want one more time to thank everyone for their service and amazing efforts. As I wrote last year, I believe that we have not only survived our test of faith and abilities, but we have proven without doubt that we are resilient and capable of conquering the challenges that face us. We have confirmed yet again that we are defined by so much more than the priest who serves as our leader. We are a parish of talented, tireless, giving people. Throughout this past year, we continued to hold beautiful services: Eucharist, thanks to the assistance of our wonderful supply priest Jackie Schmitt, and Morning and Evening Prayer, thanks to the ministry of a cadre of talented lay worship leaders (Matt and Wendy Weber, Karen Anderson, Patricia Jue, Kathy and Brian Collett, Mike Baldwin). We have enjoyed beautiful music, a welltended building, an efficient office, a notable website, newsletter, e-newsletter and other communications, a strong control of our finances and investments (confirmed by an outside audit), an inspiring youth program, a successful stewardship campaign, and a proficient search process, all due to our remarkable staff and volunteers. Our ministries and committees have not only flourished, but have strengthened and increased in number. The Search Committee is very hopeful that it may bring a final candidate for Rector to the Vestry and congregation in the near future, and I am confident that a new priest will not find a church in need, but one that he or she would love to join and lead. 3 Thank you so very much to Jackie for her inspiring sermons and guidance, to the diligent staff, to the Vestry which has remained strong and steadfast, to our tireless committee leaders and members, and to you, our parishioners for your support, prayers and love for our beloved St. James. Patty Fox Fellowship Many fellowship events happen during the year. Please consider co-chairing an event with someone else. It's a great way to meet people as well as have fun! Co-chairs need to find folks to do set up, oversee the event, and clean up. Announcements and sign up sheets are taken care of by Terry Neil. Sign up sheets for all the different events have been posted in the Parish hall and back of the sanctuary. Questions? Call Terry, The Epiphany hors d'oeuvres party is this Friday, Jan. 6th at 6pm. Please bring a hearty appetizer to share and come and enjoy the celebration of the birth of Christ with friends! Champagne will be served with the food. The Handiwork will next meet on Wed., Jan. 11th, 10:30 to 11:30am in the library. We work on lap robes and prayer shawls for parishioners and residents of LutheranCare, or on personal projects that we're trying to finish. This hour provides time for us to focus on our handiwork as well as fellowship. All are welcome to come! Our Annual Meeting is Sunday, Jan. 15th after the worship service. It's a good time to hear about the goals and accomplishments of the church and be with friends. Sign up sheets have been posted for a count, as well as brunch casserole recipes. Please bring some kind of food to share or a casserole. The usual coffee hour beverages will be provided. Terry Neil Children s Ministry In welcoming the New Year, we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany and the Baptism of the Lord. We will also be learning three Parables of Jesus Christ. These stories teach us a moral or spiritual lesson. Thanks to everyone that helped make the Christmas Pageant a wonderful event. Also, thanks to Ms. Majka for coming to our class to help us decorate our gingerbread boys/girls. Looking forward to 2017 with Godly Play and welcome children to join us in our classroom off the kitchen area. Sharon Pick The property committee is still looking for a nice floor lamp to donate to the sitting area in the Couper Room. It would be great to have some pleasant lighting for evening meetings.
