YE OLDE TOWNE SPIRE FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF EAST HAMPTON October 2017 October 22nd, 4pm Steve Washington First Presbyterian Church of East Hampton
Page 2 Ye Olde Towne Spire October 2017 For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:11-13 As the year marches on and we are stepping into October, we are also kicking off the next phase of our growing youth ministry program. After last year s exciting developments with Jr. Highs, I can t wait to see where this year takes us. We have a growing team of adults who will be meeting regularly with both Jr. and Sr. Highs, sharing meals, fellowship, bible study, service opportunities and, of course, a lot of just hanging out together. We are also starting back up our confirmation program with the first class in six years. I am so awestricken by the young people of this church every time I get a chance to interact with them, whether it s the Sunday School gang that joins me for the children s message each week or the youth who are just a couple of steps from adulthood. Their energy, their faith, their questions, and their hearts are so earnestly reaching out to encounter God and to explore how the church and their faith help define their place in the world. We have a critical mission to remember that children and youth are not just the future of the church. They are the present as well. As we read in the passage above from the prophet Jeremiah, God has plans for all our futures but calls us to live our lives in the Lord now. A child s faith journey is not something that will begin when they graduate and leave home it began the moment they arrived home for the first time as infants. Their path to lifelong discipleship is laid upon a foundation of praying at home with their families, following the good example of role models, participating in worship, learning about the Gospel of Jesus, and sharing their lives with others who are committed to Christ. Since I came to East Hampton almost a year ago, I have been so happy to see how central our children and youth are to your life as a congregation. They know this church is a home for them. And, I think we have opportunities to strengthen their spiritual lives even more. We can find ways for more adults to interact with young people while doing the work of the church and living their lives in Christ; we can teach and encourage more personal spiritual practices like individual prayer and reading the Bible; we can instill and reinforce an even deeper love of worship; and we can share our curiosity and hunger to engage the mysteries and sacraments of the Divine Trinity. I am so grateful to have a chance to share Christ with so many young people and families at First Presbyterian. I look forward to exploring with you all how we can continue finding new ways to return at least some of the many blessings that our children and youth bring to our lives each day. Pastor Scot
October 2017 Ye Olde Towne Spire Page 3 Sunday, October 22, 3:00 p.m.: The Art of Song Jazz Concert series apresents DC-based jazz cabaret vocalist Steve Washington, pianist Jane Hastay and bassist Peter Martin Weiss in a performance that will pay homage to the great male vocalists of the 20th Century including Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., Johnny Mathis, Joe Williams, Johnny Hartman, Al Jarreau, Harry Belafonte. Their music will be referenced affectionately in this presentation. Following a triumphant debut at New York City s renowned Metropolitan Room earlier this year, Steve s live presentation is perhaps best described as a unique blend of big-band, cabaret, and jazz... with a bit of the blues stirred in for good measure. Steve will pull from his varied repertoire as well as his current CD, Right to Love for what he describes as a jazzy mix of familiar favorites and unexpected gems. Steve Washington As noted earlier, Steve s current offering, Right to Love, is enjoying radio play throughout the USA, Canada, and as far away as Australia. So far, here s what they re saying about Right to Love:... the kind of phrasing you got from the Coles, Eckstines.... more jazz in his soul than a Broadway cat can be expected to show, this is a fine set.... Chris Specter (Midwest Record) Tasty stuff, in that sweetly soulful spot where jazz and pop come together.... work that wears well and will last... Washington is an artist who has spent many years developing his chops and knows how to apply his instrument to give shape to each song. Midtown Alex (Amazon) a versatile and personable singer.... simply nice to hear. Jack Bowers (All About Jazz) A native Washingtonian, Steve has been performing for nearly 30 years. With humble beginnings in college productions and singing groups, Steve went on to appear in numerous professional productions eventually earning his membership in Actors Equity (the actors union). In addition to the theater, an esteemed music career has allowed Steve to see the world. Steve has fronted several bands and orchestras over the years and in so doing has shared stages with the Marvelettes, the Drifters, the Supremes, and the Village People, to name a few. Steve performs regularly in the DC/MD/VA area s top venues and enjoys meeting new audiences at home and beyond. Our own John Cataletto will be featured on drums, as well as Jane Hastay on piano and Peter Weiss on bass. Have you taken photos during an event at church? Please send your candids to fpcsecy@optonline.net. Thank you! Pictured left to right, Linda Child and Susan Winkler. Photo by Jane Hastay

Page 8 Ye Olde Towne Spire October 2017 Morristown, NJ to East Hampton, NY It is a year this October that our new pastor, Reverend Scot McCachren arrived from Morristown, NJ to be the 21st pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in East Hampton. Turns out something else made the same journey from Morristown to East Hampton over 230 years earlier.a letter from the 1st pastor of the Morristown Presbyterian Church, Rev Timothy Johnes, was sent to East Hampton s 3 rd pastor, Rev Samuel Buell, in The letter was recently discovered by the Morristown church s archivist Jan Frazier and forwarded to Rev McCachren. The letter, now faded brown with age, is written in flowing script and of a colonial style now foreign to today s reader. It is not easy to interpret. In the future, letters like this will be more difficult to decipher as most schools no longer teach cursive handwriting. Several lines of the letter are illegible, worn away by creases in the paper. The letter, addressed to Rev and very dear brother, was sent to Rev. Buell over the loss of Buell s second wife, Mary Mulford-Buell. Rev. Johnes, who had also lost a wife, writes: Tis a theological maxim, that meditates on prayer and temptation makes a divine, a character, most to be desired by a minister of the glorious gospel of a crucified savior, who thereby is furnished to speak as an interpreter one among a thousand a word in person to the weary, & to comfort others with the same consolations with which we ourselves have been comforted of God. Throughout Rev. Buell s 82 years, he had three wives and nine children, only one living to old age. He was noted for his piety in preaching at his children s funerals, that their deaths might serve as opportunities for his congregation's spiritual enrichment.
October 2017 Ye Olde Towne Spire Page 9 Rev. Buell s wife Mary died on May 15, 1783, at the age of 47, leaving two children Mary, age 15 and Samuel, age 12. Rev. Johnes writes: But oh little did I think faithfulness that God is chastising, & that it will work out for you a far more exceeding & eternal weight of glory. And I doubt not you, stand guarded against excessive sermon that unfits for the service of God and man. Though your dear consort has been taken from you, she yet lives in your dear offering, the partner of your loves & in the hearts of your grieving friends. faith: Rev. Johns ends the letter with a message for Buell s children to keep their Know to that God who styles him, a father to father motherless children & now after to put them among his own children now therefore to remember their creator, & from their time to cry My father, My father that has been thy guide of my youth shall be the governor of my days, and follow their dear Mother as she followed Christ. And remember Doc. Young s remark: for the spirit walks of every day deceased, & smiles an angel, or a fussy frown. 2 Rev. Johnes signs the letter: My D. T. M. Johnes joins in sympathetic affection & present our best loves to yourself & to your Dear Children. - Hilary Malecki
