2 From the Pastor s Desk: Who Do You Really Work For? Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Colossians 3:23-24 A few thoughts that came through my mind when I was seeing the Right to Work posters and bumper stickers. You roll over and fumble around, trying to stop the annoying noise that has disturbed your sleep. Eventually, you silence your alarm and peer groggily at the clock through half-opened eyes. You d like to roll over and sleep some more, but you can t. Not right now. Right now, it s time to get up and get ready for work. It wouldn t be so bad if you actually enjoyed going in to work. If your supervisor weren t so demanding and unreasonable, if your paycheck weren t so paltry, if you felt as if what you did were accomplishing something, then it might not be so hard to rouse yourself in the morning. But as it is, you dread finding out what new form of mindlessness your supervisor has dreamed up for you today. And the paycheck you bring home at the end of the week hardly makes it seem as if all your hard work is worth the effort. But what if when you went in to work, you weren t working for your immediate supervisor but instead were working for Jesus? What if your reward for all your hard work weren t a paltry paycheck but a limitless inheritance from the Lord? 2

3 Just think. When you do your work for the Lord Jesus, and not just for your supervisor, you are working for someone who already has demonstrated his unconditional and boundless love for you. You are working for the one who came to serve you and give his life as your ransom. You are working for someone who loves watching you gratefully serve him and can t wait to see what you ll do for him next. You are working for someone who already has given you eternal life in heaven as an inheritance, which you cannot and do not need to earn. You are working for the one who has promised you that your work for him is never worthless. So, when your alarm goes off and tells you it s time to get ready for work, remember the one for whom you truly are working. It is the Lord Jesus for whom you are working. And that makes everything you do worthwhile. A Man Named Martin Just released from Lutheran Hour Ministries is A Man Named Martin. In five sessions, A Man Named Martin chronicles the life of this extraordinary Martin Luther. This should be a very interesting Bible Study and will take place on the following dates: The Schedule for Classes: Thursday, October 8 at 10:00 AM and 7:00 ; Thursday, October 15 at 10:00 AM and 7:00 Thursday, October 22 Classes cancelled for Pork Sausage dinner preparation Thursday, October 29, 10:00 AM and 7:00. 4 Card Make and Take Would you like to have some special, handmade Christmas cards for some special people this year? If you would, you can make 5 of them yourself! On Saturday, November 7, we will be doing another card Make and Take with 5 Christmas cards and 2 tags. It will start at 10:00 AM. About noon, we will have a light lunch. You will have as long to finish the cards as you need. The project is a fundraiser for The Pregnancy Assistance Center in Washington. We ask you to bring either $15 in cash, or $15 worth of diapers. For that you will receive a morning of fun, 5 Christmas Cards and 2 gift tags created by you and a lunch. There is a sign up sheet on the table in the back of Church along with the items you will be making. Please sign up before October 15 th so we can be sure to have enough supplies for all of you to make the cards. We hope to see you there!! For more information or questions, please see Karen Sprick. Mercy Hospice Volunteers Needed Mercy Hospice is currently seeking volunteers to offer support and comfort to patients and families in our community. Volunteers are matched with opportunities to serve according to their schedules, skills, comfort levels and geographic area. Volunteer opportunities include: caregiver relief, emotional support, Alzheimer s program, life review videos, bereavement support, Mercy Companions, administrative assistance, etc. The next free four week training will be Thursdays, October 1, 8, 15 and 22 from 9:00 12:00. 5 Washington Zone LWML Fall Rally The Washington Zone LWML Fall Rally will be held at St. John Lutheran Church at Drake, on Saturday, October 10, Registration will begin at 9:00 AM with call to order at 9:30 AM. The theme will be: Let s Fall for Jesus. A soup and sandwich luncheon will be provided by the host society. A Leadership Workshop will be held in the afternoon. It will be led by Deb Schroeder and Leigh Goucher. Please bring girls and boys underwear for ages 8-14 years. Also, please bring your Bible and your I Am Words Bible Study Book, if you have one from the Spring Rally. Please RSVP to your society president by September 25 th. (This is just to get an estimate on the number of people attending. Everyone is welcome with or without a RSVP). All the ladies of the congregation are invited. Life Chain Information We have received the following information from Carolyn Phillips, New Haven Life Chain Coordinator Your Church family are once again invited to stand together with other faith members, neighbors and pro-lifers in New Haven s Life Chain. Since 1989, Life Chain has been gathering people across our Nation and in Canada on the first Sunday in October to pray publicly for an end to the abortion of 4,000 innocent children every day in our countries. On October 4, 2015 (TODAY) from 2:00 to 3:00, we will gather along Highway 100 in New Haven, holding signs that peacefully proclaim Abortion Kills Children. We will be uniting in prayer with over 1000 cities in the U. S. and Canada. Purpose of the Life Chain The purpose of the Life Chain is to provide a visual statement of one mind and purpose by the Christian community on abortion. This year, more than ever before, Life Chain participants will be encouraged to pray fervently for one brief hour. Do not park in lots of businesses that are open. Signs are available at Trinity Lutheran Church or parking lot of Shelter 5

6 Insurance. Find a spot along each side of Highway 100. Stand 20 feet apart praying for unborn children s protection and for an end to legalized abortion. Please stay back from the road and limit talking. Last year there were 1300 chains across America! Please see the posters on our bulletin board at the back of Church! Upcoming Fall Festival Plans are underway for a great Fall Festival at the Saxon Lutheran Memorial, 296 Saxon Memorial Drive, Frohna, Missouri on Saturday, October 10 th. 8 Family Movie Night Please join us on Friday, October 16 th at 6:30 at the Church dining hall when we will have a family movie night. The movie that will be shown is entitled Joseph, King of Dreams. The remarkable story of Joseph shows us how God turned all the bad things that happened to Joseph into something good! The Lord was with Joseph in all his troubles, just as He is with us. Through Joseph God saved His people, all Egypt, and other nations from famine. Please come enjoy a relaxing evening with your family and enjoy this wonderful movie. Children can wear their pajamas and bring sleeping bags, pillows, and blankets. Adults, please bring comfy chairs. FREE popcorn, candy, and soda will be provided. If you would like to donate canned soda or candy for the upcoming movie night, please bring items to the kitchen on or before October 11 th. Please mark items for movie night. Your donations are greatly appreciated! Cookie Sale Results Thank You to everyone who purchased cookies at the Mission Society cookie sale. $ was raised for the project through With God s Little Ones that helps families in Madagascar become more self sufficient by growing their own food. May God bless their efforts. Money to buy supplies such as gardening tools, seeds, etc. are obtained by selling hand-made greeting cards. These cards are totally hand made from fiber to paper to embroidery to cards and envelopes. A sample of these cards are on display at the back of Church. Each card has an insert that tells about the source of these beautiful creations. Proceeds from our cookie sale will purchase a machine that will cut desired shapes into the paper in order to increase production. There are only a few 8

9 cards left for sale at the back of Church. These cards are for sale at $5.00 each or 3 for $ Please make your check payable to Ebenezer Mission Society. Thank you very much for considering and helping with this mission project! Ebenezer Mission Society made 89 rice warming bags for Mercy Hospital in Washington. More will be made soon. News from Lutheran Bible Translators The following is information about the people taking over for John Strasen. Project Coordinator and Translation Advisor, Botswana Robert and Mical (Rutt) Hilbert began their first term with LBT in 2013 among the Meade people in the town of Bo, Sierra Leone. They are currently helping translate the New Testament into the Shekgalgari language of the Bakgalagari people in Botswana. Robert, a native of Glen Ellyn, Illinois spent more than two years in Mali, West Africa, with the Peace Corps working in natural resource management and Bambora literacy. Mical was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala, where her family was serving as missionaries with the LCMS. Both Robert and Mical have previously studied Greek and Hebrew and are currently working on a M.A. in Language and Culture Studies and a M.A. in Applied Lingustics respectively. Robert and Mical s experiences living overseas have impressed upon them the significance of communicating in one s heart language. They feel nothing is of greater importance than spreading the Word of God, especially to those who are lost in darkness. They have one son, Carsten, and two daughters, Annabelle and Josephine. On October 25, Celebrate the dedication of Lutheran Bible Translators new international offices in Concordia, Missouri. A Reformation Service will be held at St. Paul s Lutheran Church, 401 A. Main St., Concordia at 2:00. A 9

10 Dedication Service will be held at Lutheran Bible Translators at 205 S. Main St., Concordia at 3:30. A Reception and Tours will be held at 4:00-5:00 with a Celebrate the Ministry Dinner at 5:00 at Saint Paul Lutheran High School. You are welcome to attend any one or all events. A Wonderful News Article If you get a chance please read the wonderful article in the People Section of the September 30 th issue of the Washington Missourian. The article is about the German- American Club of New Haven s trip to Germany recently where they visited the graves of two of New Haven s fallen heroes Corp. Eugene Wehmueller and Pvt. Alvin Boots Althage. Alvin is the brother of our member, Dottie Kasmann and she had many wonderful memories of her brother. The article is very interesting!! Our Pork Sausage Dinner Sunday, October 4 th is the last day the sign-up sheet will be available at the back of Church. If you haven t signed up to help at this important event of our Church, please consider doing so! The dinner will be held on Sunday, October 25 th from 11:30 AM t0 5:00. Set-up for the dinner will be Thursday, October 22 in the afternoon. We will peel potatoes for the dinner on Saturday morning, October 24 th. Clean up day will be Monday, October 26 th at 8:30 AM. Please consider helping for this important event!!! 10

11 Quarterly Voter s Meeting The Quarterly Voter s Meeting will be held October 12 th at 7:30, with the Officer s Meeting on October 7 th at 7:00. Donations Please consider donating your used shoes that you don t need any more to the Shoeman Water Project. There is a box in the old basement for these shoes. We are also still collecting non perishable food for the Leslie Food Pantry. Also, we are collecting used eyeglasses for MOST Ministries. There is a basket on the table at the back of Church for these donations! Thank you!
