Ebenezer Lutheran Church Port Hudson The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod 9100 Highway YY Leslie, Missouri Parsonage Church Rev. William F. Zastrow, Pastor Mary Sprick, Secretary ebenezerlutheranchurch.wordpress.com HOLY TRINITY Rejoice in the Day! Let us keep the Word of Christ! May 29 & 30, 2010 AS WE GATHER: On Pentecost our Lord sent the promised Spirit to lead us into all truth. Most basic and central to the Christian truth is the affirmation of one God who reveals Himself to us in the Three Persons of the Trinity---the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This is the great mystery of the faith and one which we confess not by reason of our understanding but by reason of God's revelation. Because we live in such a diverse age, it is even more important to us that we join the faithful confession of the Holy Trinity. This truth is often misunderstood but it is part of the essential revelation of God that Jesus has made known to us. Apart from this God there is no other. + PREPARATION + WELCOME RINGING OF THE BELL 1
HYMN Holy, Holy, Holy LW 168 CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. Pastor: Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression... People: The Lord does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in steadfast love. Pastor: He will have compassion on us; He will tread our iniquities under foot. People: He will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. Micah 7:18-19, adapted (Silence for meditation and reflection) Pastor: Holy and gracious God, People: I confess that I have sinned against You. Some of the sin I know---the thoughts and deeds of which I am ashamed---but some is known only to You. In the name of Jesus Christ I ask forgiveness. Deliver and restore me that I may rest in Your peace. Renew me that the desire of my heart may be to keep Your commands and the words and actions of my life may be holy and righteous through Jesus Christ, my Lord, and my Savior. Amen. 2
Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. (LSB) People: Amen. INTROIT Psalm 16:8-11 (spoken responsively) Blessed be the Holy Trinity and the undivided Unity. Let us give glory to him because he has shown his mercy to us. I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;* my flesh also dwells secure. For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Glory be to the Father and to the Son And to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and will be forever. Amen. Blessed be the Holy Trinity and the undivided Unity. 3
Let us give glory to him because he has shown his mercy to us. KYRIE (spoken) Pastor: In peace, let us pray to the Lord: Pastor: For the peace from above and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord: Pastor: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord: Pastor: For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord: Pastor: Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. People: Amen. HYMN OF PRAISE All Gory Be to God on High LW 215 All glory be to God on high, Who hath our race befriended! To us no harm shall now come nigh, The strife at last is ended; God showeth His good will to men, And peace shall reign on earth again; 4
Oh, thank Him for His goodness! We praise, we worship Thee, we trust, And give Thee thanks forever, O Father, that Thy rule is just And wise and changes never. Thy boundless power o'er all things reigns, 'Tis done whate'er Thy will ordains: Well for us that Thou rulest! O Jesus Christ, Thou only Son Of God, Thy heavenly Father, Who didst for all our sins atone And Thy lost sheep dost gather: Thou Lamb of God, to Thee on high, From out our depths, we sinners cry, Have mercy on us, Jesus! O Holy Ghost, Thou precious Gift, Thou Comforter unfailing, O'er Satan's snares our souls uplift And let Thy power availing Avert our woes and calm our dread. For us the Savior's blood was shed; We trust in Thee to save us. SALUTATION AND COLLECT Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. 5
Pastor: Let us pray. (Silence is kept for prayer.) Pastor: Almighty and everlasting God, You have given us grace to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity by the confession of a true faith and to worship the Unity in the power of the Divine Majesty. Keep us steadfast in this faith and defend us from all adversities; for You, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, live and reign, one God, now and forever. People: Amen. + WORD + OLD TESTAMENT Proverbs 8:1-4a, (A hymn which celebrates creation and describes Christ's role in that creation.) Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. PSALM HYMN "Lord, Our Lord, Thy Glorious Name" [Tune: GOTT SEI DANK, LW 182] Lord, our Lord, Thy glorious name All Thy wondrous works proclaim; In the heav'ns with radiant sings Evermore Thy glory shines. Infant lips Thou dost ordain Wrath and vengeance to restrain; Weakest means fulfill Thy will, 6
Mighty enemies to still. Moon and stars in shining height Nightly tell their Maker's might; When Thy wondrous heav'ns I scan, Then I know how weak is man. What is man that he should be Loved and visited by Thee, Raised to an exalted height, Crowned with honor in Thy sight? With dominion crowned He stands O'er the creatures of Thy hands; All to Him subjection yield In the sea and air and field. Lord, our Lord, Thy glorious name All Thy wondrous works proclaim; Thine the name of matchless worth, Excellent in all the earth. Text from The Psalter, 1912, Public domain.tune: GOTT SEI DANK, Geist-reiches Gesang Buch, Halle, 1704, ed. Johann A Freylinghausen, Public domain SECOND LESSON Acts 2:14a, (A portion of the Pentecost sermon of St. Peter in which he identifies Jesus as the Messiah whom David foresaw.) 7
Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. VERSE (Spoken by all) Alleluia. Alleluia. Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory. Alleluia. Isaiah 6:3b GOSPEL John 8:48-59 (Jesus identifies Himself as the preexistent Son of God who was even before Abraham and who fulfills the promise of the Father.) Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the eighth chapter. People: Glory to You, O Lord. (The Gospel is read.) Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ. HYMN OF THE DAY "The Father's Breath" [Tune only: ACCLAMATIONS, HS98 863] The Father's breath turned dust to life but we rebelled. Death stole us from Him and all our hopes and dreams were killed. Refrain 8
Father's Word, Spirit's Power, all revealed in Christ! The Spirit spoke to us of grace and peace to come - He who will keep the promise to lead us finally home. Refrain Only the One whom God calls Son fulfills this Word And saves all those who trust in Him and call Him Lord. Refrain In flesh and blood the hidden God showed Himself to us. And with this revelation, worship begins at last. Refrain This is the Triune God whom heav'n and earth adore Whom now we praise and honor, serving forever more.
