Zastrow, Pastor Mary Sprick, Secretary ebenezerlutheranchurch.wordpress.com AS WE GATHER: The Jewish people in exile in Babylon doubted God s plan for them, but Isaiah gave them hope when he was inspired to write the Lord s address to King Cyrus. God would use even this pagan ruler for the good of His people. And, indeed, they were able to return to the Promised Land through an edict of Cyrus. The people of Jesus day chafed under Roman rule, but Jesus taught to render to Caesar his due. It was under the Roman occupation, after all, that Jesus was born, lived, died, and rose for our salvation. Knowing that God is so resolute in His determination to use even evil and ungodly intentions for His purpose and holy will, we can live in peace. We can trust Him for our physical and spiritual needs. Paul commends the Church in Thessalonica for spreading the Gospel, though at the time Christianity was an illegal religion. Whenever we doubt God s care, then the end of the story, God s victory over all things, is our comfort for time and eternity. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP: O God, who orders all things in heaven and on earth, have mercy on us, and use for Your good purposes the powers that You permit around the world. Grant us firm faith to see You at work through them or in spite of them until our eyes behold You face-to-face; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 10 In Our Prayers We remember in our prayers, baby Cooper Schroeder, infant son of our members Andrew and Kelsey Schroeder who still has some health issues. Jeff Bopp who is at home, Chris Anderson at New Haven Care Center on hospice, and Gail Meyer who is at home. We have received special requests for prayers from members of our congregation and people in the community: Chris Grus, who has been diagnosed with cancer, Janice Bacon, the mother of Joyce Hohlt, who has also been diagnosed with cancer and Jolene Rice, the sister of Joyce Hohlt, who has recently broken her back and will have a long road to recovery after her surgery, and Otis L. Woodward, who played guitar and sang with his brothers at our closing Vacation Bible School, and has asked us to pray for him during a difficult time in his life and for healing of body and spirit. A Man Named Martin Part 3: The Movement Thursday Bible Study 10:00 AM October 26, November 2 and November 9. From Luther s 95 Theses in 1517 to the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, God was at work in the Reformation. Fierce debates over Scripture, church doctrine, and late medieval church practice led to theological positions articulating salvation as God s grace in action, with man being left to add nothing to his own salvation. In A Man Named Martin Part 3: The Movement, viewers will see how the Reformation transformed European society and, eventually, left a profound impression around the globe. 11 An Invitation by Pastor Ehrhard from Trinity Lutheran Church in New Haven Pastor Ehrhard has confirmed with the Walt Theatre in downtown New Haven to screen on Wednesday, October 25 th at 7:00 PM A Return to Grace: Luther s Life and Legacy. Admission will be free, thanks to Bethlehem, Ebenezer and Trinity Congregations of the New Haven area. Concessions will be available for purchase. This should be of particular interest to practicing Lutherans, however, guests are certainly invited to attend! A Circuit-wide Reformation Service and Lutherfest This event will be at St. John Lutheran Church at Drake on October 29 th. The service (with Holy Communion) will be at 4:00 PM. There will be special music and a special preacher. The meal will be at approximately 5:30 PM. You can come early to play games and socialize, that will start at 2:00 PM. For the meal pork loin, mashed potatoes & gravy, hotdogs, applesauce, and root beer will be provided. (Donations of a covered dish or dessert would certainly be appreciated.) Join Trinity congregation in celebrating the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation - This event will be held on Sunday, October 29 th at 3:00 PM. Trinity Lutheran Church in New Haven will host a Reformation worship service. This service will be adapted from Luther s 1526 German Service (but in English). After the service, please plan to stay for a pot-luck dinner. Guests are welcome to bring a dish to share if they choose. Our Church here at Ebenezer will celebrate the Reformation on Saturday, October 28 th at 5:00 PM and again at our regular Sunday morning service. 11
