The job candidate that did not get hired. Perhaps you can relate to the rejection that was experienced in each one of these scenarios. When we experience rejection or disappointment, know that One suffered even greater rejection on your behalf. Today s Introit and Gospel lesson both refer to Jesus saying, The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone (Psalm 118:22, Matthew 21:42). Take heart in knowing that Jesus rejection and crucifixion means your inclusion in His kingdom that kingdom built on the foundation that is Jesus Christ. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP: Gracious God, Your Son s death and resurrection gave Him the last word to silence all opponents once and for all. Grant that through faith in Him, we may bear fruit; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. This is the LORD s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Let us confess our sins to God our Father. O Lord, our God, we confess that while Jesus is our cornerstone, the rock upon which our lives and faith are built, we have still put other things before Him. We have not feared, loved, and trusted in You above all things. All too often we speak and act as if we have rejected Jesus as the cornerstone. We humbly ask that for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Restore us, O God of hosts; let Your face shine, that we may be saved! Psalm 80:7 Almighty God, in His mercy, has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of the Word, I announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in 3

Forgive us when we reject Your unfailing love, and grant us the fullness of Your salvation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 9 severe burns; Lawrence Pelster, Debbie Donatti; and Brenda Bailey as they still have cancer concerns. We also remember in our prayers, our friends and shut-ins of our congregation and community, especially Edna Deppermann, Dalphrine Deppermann, Adeline Keune, Hulda Althage, Wilbert and Sharon Helling in Arizona and all those we hold dear in our hearts. We pray for comfort for the family of Ken Skornia, whom we have been praying for in our congregation. Ken passed away this last week. Funeral service was held in Hermann on Saturday. We pray for our Missionaries in foreign countries and well as in our own country, that they will stay safe and that Your Word proclaimed by them will not return empty; we pray especially for the Missionaries we help support John Strasen in Botswana, Africa and Robin McCoy in Thailand. Robin and two of her friends, Ar and Joe, will be traveling to the United States at the end of October. We pray for our ministry here at Ebenezer Lutheran Church and all the Pastors of our Missouri Synod. Grant them all insight that they may rightly and faithfully speak both Law and Gospel for the good of all Your people. We pray for our cities and towns those who govern them and the people who dwell in them. We ask that those who work for peace and justice may be strengthened and those who cause turmoil and injustice, may repent. Please remember and grant wisdom to our elected officials, especially our President, Vice President, Governors of all our States, and Judges and all those who keep peace in our communities, respond to emergencies of health, fire, 9

10 flood and who meet the physical and emotional needs of those who rely on them To our members and guests who are here with us today. We are very glad you are here for our worship services on this Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost. May the Lord refresh you with peace and love during our worship services. Any contributions of baked sale items, craft and sewing articles, and canned goods will be welcome! Recycle Update The month of September has been great for our Recycling for Missions project. We have added $43.30 in recycle aluminum, $37.90 for recycle paper, and $41.30 cash donations from the Sunday School Birthday Bank. This brings our grand total for all recycling to $8, Individual totals are: Recycle Aluminum 10

11 $4,589.65; Recycle Paper $821.01; and cash donations $2, Sincere thanks for your support of our Recycle for Missionaries project. Cub Scout Pack 814 will have a Campfire Carnival here at Ebenezer on Saturday, October 18 th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. There will be outdoor games and campfire food. Please see the poster on our bulletin board! All are welcome! Important Quarterly Voter s Meeting Our Quarterly Voter s Meeting will be held on Monday, October 13 th at 7:00 PM. Please plan to attend this meeting of our Church! The Church officer s meeting will be October 9 th at 7:00 PM in preparation for the Quarterly Voter s Meeting.
