2 T C P M F The Call Commi ee is preparing the Ministry Site Profile which is a summary of the congrega on s life and ministry and the priori es the congrega on has for pastoral leadership as we move forward. They hope to have this profile completed by the end of August, so that the interview process can begin in September. The members of the Call Commi ee are Jane Anderson, Kathy Blascyk, Phil Johnson, Kyle Terrio-Johnson (chair), Jim Nelson and Morgan Wefelmeyer. The Transi on Team has completed its report (copies of the full report are available on the church website or in the church narthex). The eleven recommenda ons of the Transi on Team are as follows: 1) COLLABORATION We recommend that Zion con nue collabora ve work with other congregaons and especially with Our Savior s Lutheran. We do not believe that the two churches should move toward any kind of merger at this me, but representa ves should meet regularly to explore how we can strengthen the ministry of our two congrega ons by working together. 2) STAFFING We recommend that Zion have one full- me Pastor, a full- me Youth Director, and a full- me Administra ve Assistant. There was discussion regarding sharing a Youth Director with Our Savior s, but we believe that it is be er if each congrega on has their own Youth Director and that the two Youth Directors con nue to work together with programming and acvi es. In terms of ming, there is some concern that the new pastor should be called before the congrega on hires a Youth Director, however, it is also important that the congrega on have leadership in place for youth programing as soon as possible. The council will need to evaluate how to proceed with both these concerns in mind. 3) JOB DESCRIPTIONS We recommend that a Job Descrip on for the pastor be wri en before the Call Commi ee begins the interview process. The congrega on s cons tu on includes a list of the pastor s responsibili es, but a job descrip on specific to Zion will clarify the leadership and oversight responsibili es of the pastor. A new job descrip on for the Youth Director should also be wri en before interviewing for that posi on begins. 4) WORSHIP AND MUSIC We recommend that worship and music leadership explore opportunies to incorporate some form of contemporary style worship along with our tradi onal music. 5) NEW WINE We recommend that New Wine con nue as a significant ministry of Zion Lutheran. While many volunteers for this ministry are not members of Zion the ministry itself belongs to Zion. This ministry needs pastoral oversight, guidance and support, it needs assistance from administra ve staff, and it needs con nued support from congrega on members. 6) PROGRAM SIZE We recommend that leadership understand the dynamics of program sized congrega ons, and that while Zion is smaller than most program sized churches, it s ll func ons primarily as a program sized church. That puts some pressure on volunteers, and leadership should be willing to discon nue ac vi es when there is no longer the energy from volunteers to organize and implement them. 7) STRATEGIC MISSION PLANNING We recommend that the congrega on con nue the work that the Transi on Team began by developing a strategic mission plan that would iden fy the congrega on s mission, vision, and core values, together with goals and objec ves for the next five years. 8) FACILITY USE We recommend that Zion con nue to welcome community groups to use the church facili es for programs and ac vi es. Currently Kid s Corner, Scouts, AA and other occasional groups use Zion s facili es for their ac vi es. We encourage building upkeep and building use policies that welcome groups in our community. 9) VOLUNTEERS We recommend that staff and lay leadership explore crea ve ways to recruit and support the many volunteers needed to sustain the many programs and ac vi es of the congrega on. We especially encourage leaders to invite new people to par cipate and become leaders, and to find welcoming ways to mentor them in the various ac vi es of the church. 10) FINANCES We recommend that all members be challenged to grow in faithful financial stewardship, that compensa on for all staff meet or exceed synod guidelines, and that there be clear and transparent communica on with the congrega on regarding the church s finances. 11) WELCOME We recommend that Zion con nue its commitment to welcome all people into the family of God and into the fellowship of Zion Lutheran. We encourage crea ve and inten onal ways to welcome all people so that Zion is truly a place where everyone knows that they are valued and where people of every age, gender, race, sexual orienta on, and physical or mental ability find a place they can live their faith in a suppor ve and welcoming community. As you move toward calling your next pastor, it s not just the Transi on Team and the Call Commi ee and the Church Council that have work to do. Here is a ques on for each of you: what am I doing, so that the ministry of this congrega on can flourish and a pastor with energy for ministry will want to serve Christ in this congrega on? As the call process con nues, pray for your congrega on leaders, and pray for guidance of the Holy Spirit and that all the people of Zion will be engaged in the ministry of the church, and ready to partner with a new pastor as Christ con nues to lead this congrega on in mission. In Christ, Pastor Loren

3 July 19th, 2018 Dear people of Zion Lutheran Church, Join us for a Farewell Celebration Honoring Laura Anderson As she begins her Journey into the Seminary at Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa A brunch will be served in her honor following the 9:30 service on Sunday, August 12, 2018 in the social hall. All are invited to celebrate as we bid farewell to Laura & Bjørn. May God s blessings guide you to accomplish your goals throughout the coming years. Contributions toward a Congregational Gift may be brought into the office by August 10 th. A er five years in ministry together, it is me for me to take the next steps of my voca on and faith journey. Five years ago, you welcomed me back to this place that has been so integral in my own faith forma on as a child and teenager. As I transi oned into this role as your youth director, you nurtured and equipped me with gi s to be er serve our youth and families. The love and support that I have experienced has helped me to grow in confidence and has been forma ve in my own voca onal discernment. The congrega on of Zion Lutheran Church is filled with some of the most passionate, faith-filled, and caring individuals I have ever encountered. You are though ul, engaged with our church and our community, and eager to learn and serve in God s world. I am so thankful for the many ways that this congrega on has demonstrated what it means to be church together. Serving as your youth director has been the one of the greatest joys of my life and it has been a tremendous privilege to walk alongside the young people of our congrega on and community. To the young people I ve been called to serve: Your compassion and curiosity have inspired me as we have grown in faith together. I have valued the trust you have placed in me as you ve shared the joys and hardships that you have encountered. Your desire to serve, build rela onships, and be engaged in your community amazes me, and I am filled with deep gra tude for each of you. I have learned so much from you and I treasure each interac on that we have shared. You live out your faith in ways that extend far beyond the walls of the church, and it is my deepest prayer that you con nue to use the gi s that God has given you to serve the world and your church. May you know that you are loved by God and may the light of Jesus con nue to shine through you in all that you do. As I have discerned my sense of call, I have come to understand that I am being called towards connued educa on leading towards service to God s church and God s world. It is my belief that with further educa on, I will gain skills and knowledge that will be er equip me to accompany God s people and live into the voca onal call that God has for me. I will begin seminary at Wartburg Theological Seminary in September with the inten on to become an ordained pastor. This decision is filled with great joy at all that lies ahead, but also sadness and gra tude as I prepare to leave this place that has shaped and welcomed me. My final Sunday at Zion will be August 19th. Though I will transi on out of my role as your Youth Director, I will remain a member of Zion, as this is my home congrega on. I am filled with gra tude for this community of faith that sends me and the people of Zion will forever have a place in my heart. Thank you for accompanying me on this journey of faith and for the many ways you have shown God s love to me. Love, peace, and gra tude to you all, Laura Anderson Youth Director

4 Looking Ahead... **Meatball Supper: Wednesday, October 24, :00-7:00 pm ** Fall Bazaar : Saturday, November 3, 2018 Fall is fast approaching...can you believe it? Even though we Minnesotans are enjoying every last bit of summer, there are groups within Zion who are also busy planning some of our annual events, namely The Meatball Supper and The Harvest Fair. These are massive projects to undertake a lot of detail and planning and they need you. Some things to consider to help out: **Meatball Supper: Callers for supplies, individuals to set tables, and prep work the day before the meal, servers, waiters, dish doers and clean-up. **Fall Bazaar: This is a great time to plan a craft or item to sell at the bazaar. Get a group together to visit and stich, sew, craft. Look over your recipes, or PINTEREST for great sweets to sell. Offer to help set-up the day before. Count money, sell lunch, or just visit the day of the bazaar...coffee is always on. Humor from the office! 7 Zion Memorial Gifts THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT A HUGE word of gra tude to you all for your support throughout the past year as we have prepared for, traveled to, and returned from the Northeastern Minnesota Synod Journey to the ELCA Youth Gathering. Your prayers, encouragement, and financial support have made this possible THANK YOU!! It has been such a joy sharing stories of our me in Houston and Galveston with you. God s call, grace, hope, love, and the gi of Jesus truly change everything. Youth and adults are full of stories, many of which are hard to put into words. It s hard to describe the feeling of worshiping with 450 or 30,000. It s hard to convey the connec ons you made on service projects, and how those people now hold your heart. It takes me and deep listening to fully hear how this Journey has transformed lives especially when par cipants are s ll figuring that out for themselves! Please take me to ask your young people and adults about this experience! Don t just ask how was your trip so o en all youth know to answer is It was fun when they really mean It changed my life. So dig deeper listen and give space for them to formulate their answers! Some ques ons you might use to prompt them are: Who did you meet? What was their story? What inspired you? What challenged you? What is something you would like to do because of what you experienced? How can I help you? How did you encounter Jesus? How is your faith changed? Once again, we thank you for your support and we know that the Journey con nues Thanks be to God! We remember the following people through gifts of support to the mission and ministry here at Zion. In Memory of: Betty Erickson, Todd Erickson s Mother Given By: Jan Pauna, Mae Nelson, The Family of Betty Erickson In Memory of: Ed Ballman Given By: Tony & June Altringer, Pat Ebel, Susan & Phil Johnson, Paul & Alice Holm, Ailie Otterson, Jan Pauna, Gary & Jean Terrio, Mae Nelson, Myrte Radford, Nancy & Dick Stevens, Rol & Ilene Bromberg, Lewis & Virginia Castle, Tom & Jane Anderson, Dan & Naomi Palmquist, Harlan & Sharon Huso, Jackie Nelson, The Family of Ed Ballman, Tom & Nancy Martinson, Gail Schmidt, Lois Johnson, Sue Johnson, Arnelda Southworth, Terry & Vicki Anderson, The Acers Family In Honor of: Sharon Plante, Dorothy Lisignoli s Sister Given By: Pat Ebel A special ministry Last summer, Emma Daniel Gray died in Washington, D.C., at age 95. At the memorial service, Bishop Royce Woods told the congregation about the special ministry Gray practiced every night for 24 years, as she cleaned the Oval Office. She paused behind the president s chair and offered a prayer for blessings, wisdom and safety. You couldn t be around her and not know what she believed, Woods said. She always believed there was a higher power to grab on to that would lift you above any circumstance, and she was always able to do that. She preached her own eulogy by the life that she lived.
