2 . C R!C I R,! On Sunday on Easter the power of God and the will of God broke through our darkness. We had killed we had crucified the revela on of God in His son Jesus. We had rejected God s love for all people. We had insisted that we write the condi ons of God s love we wanted a God that limits and excludes, rather than one that welcomes and includes. But thankfully, God is not powerless against our tendency to embrace human sin. On Sunday, Jesus rose to life God s love could not be confined to a tomb. It could not be shut away. That is the promise of Easter. And Jesus is s ll alive. On Maundy Thursday, Jesus, knowing that he came from God and was going to God, showed his disciples the way to the joy of the abundant life. He put on a towel and washed the feet of that company of followers. The way toward life abundant is found in serving others it is the joy of giving joy to others. When you grasp onto life for yourself, it does not bring joy; only when you empty yourself in giving to others can you be filled again with the life from God that is abundant. It is not in the keeping, but in the emptying and in the filling from God that we truly live in the joy of God. Jesus could live this, because he knew that he came from God and was going to God. That gave him the freedom to empty himself in service. His resurrec on is the assurance of that life for us. Because of the resurrec on, we also know that we have come from God and are going to God; and so, we are free to open ourselves to the flow of God s love in our lives, pouring it out in service of love, and le ng ourselves be filled up again and again. The life the abundant life of the resurrected one is not something we can ever keep or accumulate for ourselves; rather it flows through us as we become channels of God s life and joy and love for all the world. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed; and He is here, filling us all to overflow with the joy of God s abundant love. 3 Transi on Team Update Transi on Team Update The Transi on Team received around 80 completed surveys, and they have been reading and summarizing what the congrega on has said in these surveys. The surveys have included many posi ve and hopeful comments about the ministry of Zion Lutheran, together with many helpful sugges ons about how we can strengthen our ministry. The need to engage youth and young families, the need for the church to be relevant in the community and in the daily lives of our people, and the hope for pastoral leadership that can energize the caring spirit and commitments of our members were among the comments the Transi on Team found in these survey responses. The Transi on Team is reviewing the survey responses to iden fy ministry priori es for the congrega on. The next step will be to involve the congrega on in an event on Sunday, April 15 during fellowship me, during which people will help clarify the goals and priori es for Zion s ministry as we begin the call process. Please con nue to keep the Transi on Team in your prays as they do this important work in prepara on for the call process at Zion. Members of the team include: Bob Nelson (chair), Jennifer Backe-Hall, Rebecca Bills, Phil Johnson, Brian Laurie, Tom Mar nson, Jackie Nelson, and Arnelda Southworth, and Pastor Loren. APRIL 15 IDENTIFYING GOALS AND PRIORITIES FOR MINISTRY [The statement below comes from a joint mee ng between council representa ves from Zion and Our Savior s that met to explore ways that we can work together to strengthen the ministries of our two congrega ons.] Shared Youth Team Proposal Youth Directors Laura Anderson of Zion and Chris na Kadelbach of Our Savior s, together with numerous volunteers from both congrega ons, have worked together in recent years to strengthen the Youth Ministry (Middle School through High School) of Zion and Our Savior s. With the blessing and support of the Pastoral Staff of both congrega ons, they have combined their efforts to gather with, and relate to, the youth of the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton area; they have worked, planned and served youth together. Summer YouthWorks Youth Mission trips, ELCA Na onal Youth Gathering/Synod Journey trips, Wednesday Senior High Lunches and Wednesday Middle School A er School programing and more have all been done together in recent years. The resul ng growth and vitality of the Youth Ministry being accomplished has been encouraging. For all prac cal purposes, the youth ministries of our two congrega ons have become one ministry. (The New Wine Youth Drama Ministry at Zion and the Confirma on Programs of each congrega on have remained independent.) Both congrega ons are facing staffing changes that will affect this shared ministry. In order to provide for an orderly transi on and con nue to grow Youth Ministry offerings, it is being proposed that this shared ministry be affirmed and formalized by appoin ng a Shared Youth Ministry Team, composed of 3 volunteers from Our Savior s and 3 volunteers from Zion, ideally to include youth members from each congrega on. The purpose of this team will include: Providing oversight for an ongoing shared Our Savior s/zion Youth Ministry, Explore addi onal Youth Ministry programing opportuni es moving forward, Provide support for paid Youth Ministry staff for this shared ministry, Crea vely explore ways to increase the number and quality of faithful rela onships with all area youth, Assure the shared Youth Ministry remains in keeping with the faith prac ces and teachings of Our Savior s and Zion Lutheran Churches, This team would report to the Church Councils of each congrega on via their representa on.

6 Advertise your business here. Youth Update April 2018 In early March, I had the opportunity to bring a group of elementary/middle school students to Camp Hiawatha for a Camper Rejuve weekend. It was a 24-hour, get-a-taste-ofcamp, whirlwind of an event! We sang camp songs, played games, helped with KP (kitchen party!), did Bible Study, had a blast sledding & playing in the snow, and enjoyed time in God s Great Northwoods. Camp is a place where faith formation happens in unconventional and deeply profound ways. Something as simple as the car ride to and from can become a cherished memory I know the conversation with the girls in my car was punctuated with laughter and joy! As a youth director, the opportunity to visit Camp Hiawatha a place that has been so formative for me in my own leadership development and faith development is a blessing. It is remarkable to let kids experience camp, get to know their counselor and each other, and spend time in holy play. I was amazed at how these kids were able to articulate their experiences so well & the way that they continue to reflect on the weekend and how it has made them excited to return to camp this summer. On Friday night when we arrived, we did a night hike, in which we learned about the rods and cones in our eyes, and how our perspective can change based on the light (or lack of light) surrounding us. As we walked through the quiet, cold night, we stopped to pause and take a look around at the trees around us, noticing details as our eyes adjusted. Camp (and time away from our ordinary lives) can help us adjust our perspective and get a better sense of the big picture. I had a chance to be a part of the boys Bible study group on Saturday afternoon, and they were tasked with making a creature with only six legs touching the floor and including all of 10 of the boys in the group. It took some time, arguing, and failed attempts, but eventually, a plan emerged and they were able to successfully travel together as this creature a good distance. Camp inspires creativity and flexibility the ability to go with the flow, to encounter God in the ordinary, and a chance to pause and reflect on how we are called into community. During the car ride home, I talked with the girls in my car about their favorite part of the weekend. Responses I heard included: I liked being able to leave my phone and ipad at home. It was really nice to get away and be with friends and God. The food was amazing especially the breadsticks! I think I might want to come to camp this summer There was a great deal more shared, but this small sampling of replies affirmed my passion for camp and the things that can come from time away: It is good to be gathered with friends, to try new things, eat good food, to disconnect, and to just play! If you have not been to camp before, I would encourage you to do so! Zion offers camperships to campers of all ages (Family camp is a great option), and we will have our camp staff from Voyageurs Lutheran Ministry here with us again this summer for Day Camp. I also hope to bring a group from Zion up to Camp Hiawatha for work day on Saturday, April 28 th if there is interest. Either way, I hope and pray that you have time to pause in the midst of these busy weeks to play, eat good food, gather with friends, and consider how God is active in your life. It s Great to Be Alive in God s Great Northwoods! Special thanks to the kids who went to Camp Hiawatha their responses and participation in the Camper Rejuve event inspired this Youth Update!
7 ELCA YOUTH GATHERING UP- DATE April 2018 Each Memorial Gift to Zion celebrates and honors a life well lived, a love one always remembered, and supports vital mission and ministry here at Zion. Upcoming fundraisers Shiny Paper Due to changes in their Community Recycling Program, Verso Duluth Mill has had to discontinue collection of shiny paper. This means that Zion can no longer collect shiny paper as a fundraiser for our youth programming. We ask that all members stop bringing their shiny paper to Zion from this point forward. Thank you all for your support of this program the past three years -- it has been a great, simple, on-going fundraiser for the youth & your support has been overwhelmingly helpful! If you have any questions, please contact Laura. Invest in Our Youth Throughout April, youth will be sharing their reasons for attending the Gathering during worship & will be asking members to invest in them & their journey to the ELCA Youth Gathering. They will be selling shares of stock in them, and each investor will receive a prayer request card, a postcard or letter from us while we are in Houston, as well as an invitation to a thank you meal next summer following the Gathering. I ask you to prayerfully consider investing in our young people. More details will come in the next few weeks. An Evening at the Historic Scott House We will be hosting an event at the Historic Scott House on Sunday, April 29 th to raise funds for the ELCA Youth Gathering. There will be a presentation by the youth, silent auction items, entertainment and more. Tickets will be sold for $25 each, and will be available after worship in April. Due to limited capacity, we will be running two events, one 2:00pm-4:00pm, and 6:00pm-8:00pm, each with space for 50 people. Tickets will be available on a first-come basis, and all proceeds will go towards the cost of the Gathering. If you would like to donate a silent auction item or help with any other part of this event, please contact Laura or any of the youth attending the Gathering. Thank you in advance!
