1 May 2018 Greenwood United Methodist Church Page May 2018 Twig Bender F r o m t he P a s to r 6 0 Ye a rs O f L a u r e l Pa r k T his year marks 60 years since the inception of Laurel Park Methodist Church. Wow! To think that 61 years ago, members of the Virginia Annual Conference thought there should be a church in the then-being-built community of Laurel Park. Even though there were other Methodist churches nearby, they saw an opportunity and a need and intentionally planned for a new congregation. At the 1957 Annual Conference, a pastor was appointed to begin doing the leg work to create a place for this as yet non-existent congregation. The following January, the Richmond District purchased 6 lots on Hungary Road for the new church building. The Rev. Dr. Carl Sanders, District Superintendent, conducted the groundbreaking on February 16, 1958, even though there was no congregation yet! The first service was conducted on March 2, by the founding pastor, the Rev. Charles L. Stillwell, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey Faulkner, on Hungary Road, not far from the railroad track. May 11, 1958 was Charter Sunday. It was at this service still in the Faulkner home (Continued on page 9) Our Ministry Of Prayer Roger Eckwright, Melissa Farrar, Leola Frayser, Michelle Gibbs, Lori Lohr, Rob Maxey, Iver Ochoa, Rudd Patteson, Dorothy Powell, Gloria Slingerland, Bob Smith, Jamison Simpson, Susan Wachter, Harold Yeary

The CARITAS program began in the late 1980 s to provide help to Metro Richmond area people who are homeless or addicted. Each week three different congregations open their churches to provide overnight shelter and meals for those in need. CARITAS also provides permanent solutions to individuals and families. They run a furniture bank and accept donations of gently-used furniture and household goods. Their clients include women escaping domestic violence, those who have been homeless, elderly persons on limited income, people with mental and physical disabilities, refuge families from all over the world, youth and adults recovering from substance abuse, victims of natural disaster and the working poor. They also run The Healing Place, a residential recovery facility for men struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. And they provide a Workforce Development Program to train participants so they can find jobs and become productive independent citizens. Greenwood UMC has hosted the overnight CARITAS program for many years. A few years ago Adamarye Patteson, Greenwood s CARITAS coordinator, called me a few days before my Sunday School class was scheduled to serve supper on Tuesday and asked if I would pick up a birthday cake for a little girl whose fourth birthday was on that day. (Continued on page 8)
3 May 2018 Page 3 K i t s fo r C o n fe r e n c e In May our outreach efforts turn to Kits for Conference anticipating the Virginia Annual Conference in June. Traditionally, the Greenwood/Laurel Park Charge has assembled, or donated funds for, a variety of Relief Supply Kits for donation to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). These funds and assembled kits are transported to Annual Conference by our pastor and our Conference delegates. UMCOR s relief kits help sustain everyday life for people who lack ready access to essential supplies when a disaster strikes. In the past, UMCOR relief kits were intended for use both domestically and abroad. There were several categories of kits, including layette kits, birthing kits and more. However, due to a change in policy, now UMCOR only collects hygiene (a.k.a. health kits ), cleaning (what we used to call flood buckets ) and school kits for distribution within the United States only. Those wishing to donate can see lists of kit contents and packaging instructions posted in the narthex at church. Or online at UMCOR s website: org/umcor/relief-supplies. Bob Stapleton has empty buckets available for those who want to assemble a cleaning kit. Readers who prefer to donate funds can find the value of each kit at the UMCOR website or in the narthex. All assembled kits and donated funds need to be in the church by Sunday, June 10. Pastor Barbara and our Conference (Continued on page 12) Medicine Bottle Donations Our medicine bottle collecting is nearing a close. So far we have 741! The church whose members have been taking the bottles on mission trips can t do it anymore and the bottles can't be sent on their own because they don't always make it to their destination. So gather all the bottles you can find and bring them to the Just Friends classroom through July 23. A little bird told Mary Cullom we will probably have the honor of contributing the most for the second year in a row!
4 Page 4 The Twig Bender After School Update We l c o m e N e w Wo r ke r s By Adamarye Patteson We would like to welcome two new people to our afterschool staff. The first is Roger M. Rouillard, a retired Episcopal priest. Born and raised in New England, Roger spent three years in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked in various positions before beginning his training for the Episcopal priesthood, being ordained in Roger brings many years of experience in ministry and volunteer work. I m very happy and blessed to be part of this community and get to know more people, said Roger. He drives our van to pick the children up from school and then helps with the everyday tasks at the after school. The second person we welcome is Jordan Stapleton who works Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Jordan, Bob and Gay Stapleton s granddaughter, is a long time member of the Greenwood Church Family. We are very fortunate to have these two people join our afterschool. If you have a chance, go by and introduce yourself to Roger. Everyone already knows Jordan so just give her a big welcome to our program. And please keep Lori Lohr in your prayers. The children really miss her and she misses them. G r e e n wo o d Wo m e n s C i r c l e s The Ruth Circle will meet Wednesday, May 2 at 7 p.m. in the home of Agnes Dalton. We will be packing up our school kits for Conference and continuing our Bible Study. The Willing Workers Circle was pleased to learn that the Easter dinner they donated was the most food ever collected for one family at Longdale Elementary School. The dinner was designated for a family where the grandparents are raising their four grandchildren after the death of the children s mother. Easter dinner included many staples to fill their pantry. We continue to support the Greenwood neighborhood and Longdale E.S. in particular. We ll meet on Thursday, May 3 at 5:30 p.m. in the choir room at Greenwood.

The day is set aside as a day to turn to God in prayer and meditation. The official support of the observance came in the middle of the 20th century when President Truman signed the decree of the holiday s proclamation. Two ways you may consider observing the National Day of Prayer: The Life Way Christian Stores will have a special time of prayer for our community, our nation, and our world from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be an observance at the Virginia State Capitol near the Bell Tower from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Your gifts this day help The UMC advocate for peace and justice through a broad spectrum of global programs. Half of this special offering goes to ministries in the Virginia Annual Conference and half goes to General Board of Church and Society. Samaritan Offering This Samaritan Offering running from Mother s Day (May 13) through Father s Day (June 17) will help ensure the personal security and peace of mind of residents of the Hermitage who have outlived their monetary resources and, through no fault of their own, become unable to pay some or all of their monthly charges. 8 Page 8 May is CARITAS Month The Twig Bender (Continued from page 2) After our guests finished their meal, I brought the decorated cake out and placed it in front of the little girl. She was surprised and confused. Her mother said that her daughter didn t know what to do since she had never had her own birthday cake before. I explained to her that she was a special little girl and that the cake was to celebrate her birthday and that she could make a wish and blow out the candles and then we would slice the cake and give pieces to everyone. I could barely sing the Happy Birthday song through the tears in my eyes. I thought of the excessive birthday parties we sometimes provide for our children and even our pets! Please join me in praying for that little girl that God continues to watch over her and all those who need help from CARITAS. And please prayerfully consider giving a donation to the CARITAS program. Note: this is the fifth in a monthly series about how your Communion Offerings are used. 9 May 2018 Page 9 L P U M C 6 0 th A n n i v e rs a r y (Continued from page 1) that the new church was officially organized. On that day, 31 people confessed their faith or transferred their membership to Laurel Park Methodist Church. Charter members were accepted throughout the first year, increasing the membership to 80 people! Can you imagine that many worshiping in your living room? Services continued to be held at the Faulkners until the first phase of the new building was completed. Laurel Park membership continued to grow. Laurel Park s first female pastor, the Rev. Kathryn F. Talley, was appointed the eighth pastor in She led the church s 30 th anniversary celebration, which included a new heat pump for the sanctuary. Much has happened at and through Laurel Park over the years. In the compilation of this history, it is interesting to note, that in 2018, I am the 18 th pastor of this congregation. Most pastors have overseen some major change to the building or other property, encouraged upkeep and renovations, and led the congregation in various directions of ministry. Notes on spiritual formation, Bible Study, and mission outreach fill the history books. 10 Page 10 The Twig Bender 6 0 Ye a r s o f L a u r e l P a r k U M C (Continued from page 9) We all know that there are a lot of gray hairs entering and exiting that building on a regular basis. Many of us are aging, our memories are getting shorter and some things seem dearer to us. As May 2018 has approached, the members of Laurel Park have taken note of the ever-decreasing number of charter members still with us, the number of former pastors who have retired, and some who have died, the importance of celebrating what we have while we have it. The last celebration of the LPUMC anniversary was the 50 th and there was some talk of waiting till 75. But in the last year, we have either buried from the church, or been notified of several people dying who were charter members or their children added to the preparatory roll. While some are still with us and able to enjoy the celebration, we are going to celebrate! In deference to Mother s Day, and wanting to honor mothers, but also to honor our congregation, we have chosen May 20 as the Big Day. We will have a joint worship service with our (older!) sister church Greenwood United Methodist. We are inviting back charter members and their children, former Laurel Park pastors and other guests to be part of the celebration. We give thanks to those people who funded a pastor, the purchase of land and the beginnings of a building, even before there was a congregation. We give thanks for their foresight and their faith. We celebrate the ministry that has happened, is happening and will happen. And we look for opportunities to further Christ s work through our faith, and action, in planting seeds for another generation. So, on May 20 at 11 a.m. come worship with us. Celebrate with us. Give thanks with us! And plan to stay and break bread together, as Jesus taught, as the new church continued and as good Methodists can do well! Covered dish following the service. Sliced ham, bread, and beverages will be provided. Grace and peace, Barbara
11 May 2018 Page 11 Trinity Sunday is May 27 A core belief of our faith is the Triune God: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, most commonly referred to as the Trinity. Greenwood and the United Methodist Church will celebrate Trinity Sunday 2018 on May 27. Observed on the first Sunday after Pentecost, Trinity Sunday celebrates our Christian doctrine of God in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit the Holy Trinity. Trinity Sunday is one of the few Christian observations that celebrates a doctrine, not an event. Although the Trinity per se is never mentioned in the Bible, simple Internet research reveals plenty of references which authenticate the doctrine of the Trinity more Scripture than we have room to print in this publication. Take a minute to look up the Trinity, and you ll easily understand the doctrine of the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Right: Thank You note from Lakeside Volunteer Rescue Squad. Your Communion Offerings at work.

Kits for Conference 2018 (Continued from page 3) delegates will then carry them to Conference, scheduled for June in Hampton. To raise awareness of UMCOR s relief supply efforts, churches across the Conference have been challenged to send to conference one more kit than last year. That change of policy mentioned earlier is that UMCOR discontinued international relief supplies distribution on Dec. 31, The committee will offer relief grants to international partners to allow for local purchase and assembly of kits which are more culturally appropriate.
