It was a short drive across town from Best Buy in Pleasant Hill, but seemed like an unscheduled parade as we drove down Main Street in Walnut Creek that Saturday morning. We got lots of waves and smiles from early morning shoppers. Thanks go to participants Larry & Diane Trimpey, Bob & Rose Estrella, Denny & Dee Desmond, Ron Wolfman, Mike Ferre, Bob Reed & Lynda Oliver, Don & Kathy McGrath, Denis & Diane Bianchi, Bob & Sandi Rigor, and Herb & Marilyn Neumann. They all offered a day of their summer to share their cars with residents and guests of Byron Park. We received a nice letter from the Assistant Director of Wellness at Byron Park to tell us about the very positive feedback from their residents and how much they enjoyed seeing our cars and visiting with us. Bill & Donna Truesdell Thank you Bill & Donna for all you do! 2 Along the Back Roads with Bob First let me thank Marianne & Pete Goodson, Bob & Sandi Rigor for leading wonderful parade tours to Benicia s torchlight and Concord s fourth of July celebrations. Both were well represented by the Diablo A s and showed how much we care for our communities. We saw veterans from World War II, Korea and Vietnam and Rosies (Rosie the Riveters) of WWII fame. It was also nice to see John Bailey who had both his cars in the Benicia parade and who got a haircut for the occasion, (some of you may have heard my remarks to him regarding this matter). If you thought my remarks to him were cruel, guess what? You haven t heard anything yet. If I didn t make jokes about him, he would think I was sick. Maybe in the future we will pay tribute to those of us that are veterans of People s Park in In May of 69 as a member of the California Army National Guard, based in Walnut Creek, then governor Ronald Reagan called up Company C and ordered our unit to provide security at the UC Berkeley campus. At this time I was a junior at Armstrong College in Berkeley which was just blocks away from the Cal campus. We had been told earlier to prepare for this eventuality, which went in one ear and out the other. Come Sunday afternoon, and I m itching to go home. The activation order arrives, and we are trucked to Berkeley in the back of a deuce and a half (cattle truck). I was unprepared for this. I had not packed my duffel bag, did not have a change of clothing, personal hygiene items, glasses, half of a tent, just the clothes I had on. We arrived in Berkeley late that Sunday. I found myself taking out my new contact lenses and sleeping on the ground in People s Park. It took my mother and the neighbors three days to get my personal equipment to Berkeley, so for three days I was not able to change my clothes or able to see clearly for that matter, since I had no way to clean/disinfect my new contact lenses. So here I am patrolling the streets of Berkeley with only an unloaded M-1 rifle and a rusty bayonet and not able to see clearly. This went on for eight days. And on the last day, before we could be released from Berkeley, we were trucked down to the Berkeley Marina to have four hours of R&R (rest & relaxation), We had to play volleyball as a mandatory requirement. There was a publication called the Berkeley Barb which did articles and pictures of our adventures which I sent to my brother who had been deployed to Vietnam (Air Force) who got a big kick out of this. On second thought, maybe we should let this story die. 3 MAFCA National Convention Loveland, Colorado Two Model A s from the Diablo A s braved the road to the 2016 MAFCA National Convention in Loveland, Colorado. The Grady s and the Janke s averaged about 200 miles a day, taking it easy and seeing the sights. The first attraction was Dinosaur National Monument in Utah and Colorado where we saw the wall of bones and some wonderful assembled skeletons of these giants who once roamed the earth. The next day we took in Rocky Mountain National Park, driving our little cars to over 12,000 feet. The Janke s car overheated at about 10,500 feet fortunately there was snow and applying it to the radiator took care of the problem. We saw lots of elk and enjoyed the panoramic views from the top of the mountains. The day finished with our arrival in Loveland and the start of the fun at the National Convention. An exceptionally well organized and executed event the convention included fashion judging, a fashion boutique, many seminars, vehicle judging, tours, a Hubley competition, a trip to the Terry Bison Ranch, a Grand Tour and Lunch to Estes Park, and a banquet to name a few. The food was fabulous and the weather ideal. The Pugh s and Ed James also attended the convention driving modern automobiles. In vehicle judging Bob Grady entered his beautiful 1930 Coupe. He was the only person in judging who drove his car to the event with the exception of a couple of local cars. Bob did over 1,400 miles to reach Loveland, then cleaned his car and had it judged earning 422 points and a National Award of Excellence! Ed James trailered his 1931 pickup courtesy of Bill and Donna Truesdell. His gorgeous wide bed earned 455 points and a National Award of Excellence. Congratulations to both Bob and Ed! There were over 1,100 people in attendance from 38 states and 4 countries with over 400 Model As to see. When the tours took off, it was a sign to behold. You can visit the MAFCA website, and get a look at the video. There are also a number posted on U-Tube. After the final banquet, the two Model A s took off to explore Colorado on the way home. We visited Chimney Rock National Monument, Great Sand Dunes National Park, Mesa Verde National Park, Four Corners National Monument, Hovenweep National Monument, and drove through the Canyon of the Ancients. The only problems experienced were a failed modern condenser and a flat tire. The condenser resulted in a trip to Bert s Model A on the back of a big yellow truck on a Saturday. The people at Bert s stayed open for two extra hours and helped trouble shoot the problem. Modern condensers fail differently than conventional so it took some time to figure out. We returned home across Nevada traveling Highway 50, the Loneliest Road in America. It was a wonderful trip. If you have not attended a National Convention, plan on going to Reno in By the way, the Diablo A s are responsible for the Banquet in Reno. Alex & Ruth, Tour Leaders Dinosaur Nat l. 4 July 3rd, 2016 Torchlight Parade Benicia, CA Tour Leaders, Pete & Marianne Goodson We had a whopping 17 cars in the Benicia Torchlight July 3rd parade. The cars, drivers and passengers were beautifully decorated/dressed in red, white and blue, and the crowds were very appreciative of how we looked heading towards the reviewing stand. People were applauding us and giving us thumbs up all along the way. We again took a 1st place in the Car Club category. (I think if they still did a grand prize, we would have taken home our 3rd trophy!) Thank you, again, to all who participated. Many people commented that they wouldn t miss participating in this parade. I m sorry that Pete and I didn t get a chance to talk to everyone. It was great to see so many people that we haven t seen since the last Mystery Tour. Thank you for all your support. Thank you Pete and Marianne! We are so happy you re both doing so well. Thank you for leading this great parade for so many years now! Love your patriotic toes, Marianne! MotoMeter 4 July 2016

5 Fourth of July Parade Concord, CA Tour Leaders, Bob & Sandi Rigor What a great 240th birthday party! The weather was perfect, and thousands of onlookers came to downtown Concord in order to enjoy it all. Even Lady Liberty and Uncle Sam showed up. We really enjoyed talking to the Rosies who were there too. Participation in the Concord July 4th Parade has become a tradition for the Diablo A s and the crowd loves it too. We had our biggest turnout yet, a dozen model A s, faithful Diablo A s members, (couples and families), four Pearl Harbor survivors and two of their wives, as well as three Korean War Veterans. We filled almost every seat plus the back end of the Neumann s Roadster Pickup too. Our relationship with the Pearl Harbor Survivors and Families organization just gets better each time we interact. We are honored and proud to be their escort service and the few remaining heroes are eager to join us. This year we have added the Korean War Survivors and Families Group as well. If you haven t driven your Model A in a parade, we hope you ll consider signing up for the Walnut Festival parade in October. It s a lot of great ahooga fun. MotoMeter 5 July 2016

10 CAUGHT IN THE HEADLIGHTS LARRY AND DIANE TRIMPEY Larry was born in Nebraska, attended elementary school in Oakland and went to Acalanes High School in Lafayette. He has always been a car guy. When he was twenty-one years old, he belonged to a car club and built a dune buggy out of a Volkswagen chassis. When he went to the old DMV in Martinez, he found out it was the first one to be registered in Contra Costa County and they listed it under special construction. His chosen profession was being a mechanic, and he worked for the Ford Dealership in Concord as well as Shell Oil and several other companies until he went into business for himself. Larry always wanted a Model A, and so when he and Diane went to the Sacramento Car Museum and he saw a 1928 Model A Coupe Special, he bought it. He and Diane joined the Diablo A s in 2011 and have been enjoying the activities and fellow members ever since. Diane was born in northern Michigan and grew up on Grand Lake, traveling twenty miles to and from school on a bus. Her family ended up in this area of Michigan because her great grandfather came over from Germany when he was sixteen, finding a job on a sailing schooner traveling up the shores of Lake Huron. The Fame shipwrecked off Presque Isle and he was one of only a few who survived. He found work cutting timber for steamboats traveling the Great Lakes and married the local wood cutter s daughter. Diane grew up sailing, her father built sailing boats and her love for sailing still exists today. She became an RN and ended up traveling to California in the early sixties with a nursing friend. They found work at Stanford Medical Center. She fell in love with California, and has lived here ever since. Diane and Larry met in 2006, both having lost their spouses in separate tragic accidents. They were married in 2008 and now she is a car girl. MotoMeter 10 July 2016

13 Excerpts from: WE NEVER CALLED HIM HENRY By Harry Bennett as told to Paul Marcus The incredible Henry Ford He was a giant and a pigmy. His millions of cars carved roads around the world while a whole generation joked about him and his Tin Lizzie. The giant in him changed the industrial life of America. His ignorance convinced him that the jagged crystals of table sugar would cut his stomach. He dominated presidents and kings, yet he set gangsters up in business because he feared them. Harry Bennett was the closest human to Henry Ford. This is his story of thirty years as Ford s trouble shooter and personal confidant. [More from this fascinating book next month] The Very Last Laugh RETARDED GRANDPARENTS After summer vacation, a teacher asked her young pupils how they spent their holidays away from school. One child wrote the following: We always used to spend summers with Grandma and Grandpa. They used to live in a big brick house, but Grandpa got retarded and moved to Florida. They go to a building called a wrecked center, but they must have got it fixed because it is all okay now, and do exercises there. There is a swimming pool too where they all jump up and down with hats on. At their gate, there is a doll house with a little old man sitting in it. He watches all day so nobody can escape. Sometimes they sneak out. They go cruising in their golf carts. Nobody there cooks, they just eat out. And, they eat the same thing every night: Early Birds. Some of the people can t get out past the man in the doll house. The ones who do get out, bring food back to the wrecked center and call it potluck. My Grandma says that Grandpa worked all his life to earn his retardment and says I should work hard so I can be retarded someday too. When I earn my retardment, I want to be the man in the doll house. Then I will let people out so they can visit their grandchildren. MotoMeter 13 July 2016
