A Look Back Napa Valley A s History for October October 5, 2003: Six Model A s participated in the Yountville parade. The theme for the year was The Swinging 30 s, so Jack and Bruce Tschida and Randy and Lea Stegman drove their 1930 Model A s as part of the Vintage 1870 group, while Howard and Elsie Goines, Jerry Belden and Larry Dreyer drove their Model A s to represent the club. October 5, 2008: There were two Model A s and a Model T in the Yountville Days parade this year. Joe, Virginia, and Ken Midile drove their sport coupe and Jim Mounter drove his pickup. There was a mix-up in the registration and our number in the parade was assigned to someone with a yellow Model T open cab pickup, so we went through the parade with the Model T leading. Toward the end of the parade, Virginia s fan club appeared holding up signs saying We (heart) Virginia. October 11, 2008: Sam and Marty Leach led a tour of Napa Valley Then and Now. Larry and Linda Dreyer, Barbara Fanucchi, Jim Mounter, and Joe, Virginia, and Ken Midile drove Model A s. Randy and Lea Stegman and Howard and Elsie Goines also participated. Sam had prepared a map of Napa and photos of various locations in Napa as they appeared in the 30 s and as they appear now. A Look Forward October 20 th Chocolates Class presented by Sam Leach October 25 th Napa Valley A s Meeting and Pie Social, 7:00 pm at Rabobank. 1

2 OCTOBER 2018 WINE PRESS VOLUME39, ISSUE 10 NAPA VALLEY HISTORY TOUR September 22 nd was International Model A Ford Day and Sam and Marty Leach created a tour of Napa that included a booklet with brief stories of some of the prominent people, good and bad, that are connected to the valley in some way. There was a map of the city of Napa from the 1930 s and also copies of portions of the newspapers from the years 1928 to The tour took us by the locations highlighted in the newspapers and ended with lunch at Applebee s on Soscol Avenue. Thank you Marty and Sam for a great tour! 2

5 MEETING DATE The next meeting will be the fourth Thursday of the month, October 25, We will meet at 7:00 pm at Rabobank, 700 Trancas St., Napa, California. This month s refreshments will be a pie social, so we will be starting one half hour early at 7:00 instead of 7:30. Bring your favorite pie and your own plate and serving utensils. Any extra pie will be raffled off at the meeting. This will be the final opportunity to vote on the Jack and Gene Tschida Award and on officers for the next year. CHOCOLATES CLASS Our president, Sam Leach, has made handmade but professional quality chocolates for the Christmas luncheons for the past several years. Several people in the Marin A s and the Sonoma A s have expressed an interest in learning how to make these chocolates themselves. In response, Sam is teaching a chocolates class in his home. If there is sufficient interest, Sam will be conducting additional classes, as it is necessary to limit the class size to ten people. The first class will be Saturday, October 20th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. This first class is likely to be filled already, but if you are interested, please call Sam at Tech Tip by Jim Cannon, MAFCA Technical Director While My Oil Gently Drains Every time you drain the engine oil to change it, while you are waiting for all the dripping to stop, may I suggest you add the following simple items to your oil change routine? Check the ignition point gap with a feeler gauge. Adjust if required. Look at the points to make sure they still look good (not pitted or burnt). Wipe off the ignition cam with a rag. Now put a small dab of fresh cam grease on 2 of the lobes of the ignition cam. Put a drop or two of light oil in the little oiler on the side of the distributor. If you have the cam screw with the hole drilled in it, put a drop or two in there, too. Put a couple of drops of engine oil in each hole on top of the throttle assembly that is bolted to the back of the engine. Check the fan belt for tension. That s it! In the time it takes for the oil to all drain out, you have taken care of several little routine maintenance items on your A that will help keep it running well and avoid MAFCA members should return their membership renewals and ballots for the National Board of Directors by October 15, a problem on the road. 6 NAPA VALLEY A S General Meeting September 27, 2018 The meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM by President Sam Leach. There were six members present. Sunshine: Howdy was in the hospital due to the problem with his leg. Correspondence: We received a letter from someone who has a Model A but they are not sure it is restorable. Maybe a couple of members can take a look at it. We also had a letter from someone with a car for sale; the information was passed around. Treasurer: The club is still solvent. Vice President/Activities: The September tour was enjoyable. Sam Leach printed out directions for all the participants for the tour around Napa. Sam also handed out a booklet he wrote of some historical events in Napa. After the tour we had lunch at Applebees at South Napa Shopping Center. October tour There was discussion about a parade in Yountville on October 7 th, it was short notice and most of the members present expressed that they would not be able to participate. There were no other suggestions for October tours. There was also discussion of the club being in the Napa Holiday parade the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This parade is in the evening and includes decorating the cars with lights. No decision was made whether to enter the parade. Editor: Nothing new to report. Hospitality: At the October meeting there will be a Pie Social; every family brings a pie to share with the group. We will meet at 7:00 PM, one half hour earlier than usual so we can enjoy the pies. Refreshments/Raffle: We enjoyed cake and ice cream, which was brought by the Keysers. There was no raffle. New Business: Sam will be putting on a chocolates class for the Marin and Sonoma A s (ten people per class). If anyone in our club is interested please call Sam Leach. The first class is Saturday October 20 th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Shop Talk: Ken Rands told us that he bought a car. It is a 1929 Tudor and it came from the Grass Valley area. He says it is running well. He has restored the license plate for it. There was some discussion about restoring license plates. As there was no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:11 PM. 7 Napa Valley A s Elections There are only two meetings left this year, so it s not too early to start thinking about volunteering for one of the elected offices in the club. Elected officers are President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. If you are interested in serving as one of the appointed officers: Editor, Historian, Hospitality, NCRG Representative, Raffle, or Sunshine, now is the time to make it known. It s also time to vote for the 2018 recipients of the Jack and Gene Tschida Award. Ballots (one ballot per member) are printed below and can be turned in at the September and October meetings or mailed to P.O. Box 2656, Napa, CA For those who may not be familiar with Jack and Gene Tschida, here is some background information: Jack and Gene were actively involved in forming the chapter by writing the bylaws and recruiting new members, supporting the club by leading tours and participating in club events. They encouraged new members and helped them to become better acquainted with the rest of the club. Jack helped individual members on tours by loaning tools and providing technical assistance when needed. Both Jack and Gene served as president of the chapter and held other positions as well. Jack was a master judge in car judging and Gene was a master judge in era fashions. Both conducted seminars to help members get started in judging and shared their expertise with anyone who had questions about either subject. Jack and Gene were recognized nationally as winners of the era fashion photo contest.
