1 The DiamondBack Times Volume 3, Issue 8 April 30, 2013 Luke Wilson: Dutton/Brady s Newest American Citizen Staff Advisor: Ms. Toner Editor: Brody Dahlman Reporters: Austin Storle, Lawrence Bryant, Kaity Miller, Trent Duty, and David Shumway. Senior, Luke Wilson, officially became an American citizen on Thursday, April 18 in Butte. Luke, who was born in Wattford, England, has had a green card but decided that he wanted to become a full-fledge citizen with all its rights and responsibilities. He began this process about a year ago. People who are born American citizens are not obligated to fill out an application, take a test, and pledge an oath. Luke, however, was required to follow the protocol to become a citizen. First of all, the application cost $700 and had to be checked out by (Continued on page 4) Luke taking the oath to become an American citizen. T h e S. O. Q. Committee determines a list of viable candidates for Student of the Quarter honors. Students are eliminated from the list based on the following criteria: a t t e n d a n c e / t a r d i e s, g r a d es, b e h avior, a t t i t u d e / r e s p e c t, i n i t i a t i v e, a n d community service. The students remaining on the list are then voted on by the staff. Based on this vote tally and the Committee s prerogative, a student is selected along with several runners-up. S a v a n n a h Timmerman will be awarded with a twenty-five dollar gift certificate to the Mountain View CO- OP, a twenty-five dollar gift certificate from student council to any store of her choice, a wrist watch, and to be first in the lunch line for the rest of the quarter.

3 Volume 3, Issue 8 Page 3 Heritage Trip 2013 By Austin Storle On Sunday April 7, 2013, the Dutton/Brady Heritage Trip members departed for Boston at 4:30 A.M. The members included seniors: Samatha Cox, Tiegan Johnson, Savannah Timmerman, Luke Wilson, Shannon Habel, Benjamin Pilgeram, Trent Duty, Justin Fritz, and Brody Dahlman, juniors: Austin Storle, Lacey Jones, Braxton Hasner, Hailee Vandenbos, and Daniel Wahl. Chaperones were Julia Timmerman, Gail Habel, Tasha Johnson, and Heidi Fritz. First, they flew from Great Falls to Denver and from Denver to their first s t a y a t B o s t o n, Massachusetts. The following morning, they joined the students from Georgia. A few notable sites they saw in Boston were Paul Revere s house and grave, the Old North Church, site of the Boston Massacre, view of the city from the top of the Prudential Building, and enjoyed the play Shear Madness. After spending three nights and two days touring Boston, the group departed for New York City. While visiting The Big Apple, the group saw the 9/11 Memorial, Central Park, Times Square, Chinatown, viewed the city from the top of the Empire State building, experienced a tour around the Statue of Liberty from a boat, and enjoyed the Broadway Musical Chicago. Next, after enjoying New York for two days, t h e y d e p a r t e d f o r Philadelphia on their way to Washington, D.C. While in The City of Brotherly Love, the students and c h a p e r o n e s t o u r e d Independence Hall where they saw the Liberty Bell, the room where the Declaration of Independence was signed, and later ate Philadelphia Cheese steaks for dinner. Finally, on Saturday, the group started to explore our nation s capitol, Washington, D.C. Major and most interesting sites they visited were: Mount Vernon, the Washington Monument, the White House, Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, FDR Memorial, the Smithsonian, tour of the capital building, and Arlington National Cemetery. On the following Monday morning, they departed for home, and after a little bit of turbulence and rough riding, the group arrived in Dutton around midnight. Yo Hailee, Sam, Lacey, Shannon, Savannah! 4 The DiamondBack Times Page 4 Luke Wilson Becomes an American Citizen (continued) (Continued from page 1) Homeland Security. He then had to go to Helena twice. The first time, he was fingerprinted and a mug shot was taken of him and the next time to take the required test. The test consisted of 10 questions where he had to get six of t h e m c o r r e c t. Examples of the questions were who is the Speaker of the House and when was the Declaration of Independence signed? The culmination of this process was in Butte where he and 25 other people took the oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States. At this ceremony, Luke received a certificate and other memorabilia. Luke was honored at Dutton/Brady, Monday, April 22. He explained the citizenship process and showed the audience his citizenship papers. Also in attendance were Luke s parents, American Legion members Ross F i t z g e r a l d, F r a n k S c hoonover, A r ne Pederson and Grandpa Jerry Blouin. Frank said a few words praising Luke for his accomplishments and gave him a card. Reegan DeBruycker read the Poem America by Deanna C. Dilley. Luke led the audience in The Pledge of Allegiance, after which everyone enjoyed an ice cream c a k e f r o m D Q compliments of the Dutton/Brady Student Council. Congratulations, Luke!
5 Volume 3, Issue 8 Page 5 Prom 2013 By Lawrence Bryant On April 20 th 2013, the Junior Class of Dutton/Brady High School hosted its annual prom. The theme this year was Mardi Gras. T w e n t y c o u p l e s attended this year s prom. Highlight of the evening was the announcement of the Prom Royalty. The candidates w ere: Savannah Timmerman and Shannon Habel for Queen and Tiegan J o h n s o n, B r o d y D a h l m a n, L u k e Willson, and Trent Duty for King. Prom King was Brody Dahlman and Queen was Savannah Timmerman. The king and queen were selected by the student body. This year s DJ was Mr. Tim Tharp. Eighth graders Eric Wahl and Raelynn Jones and first grader Chloe Seeley were the servers. Chaperones were Mrs. Simms, Dora Sealy, and LillyJean Wahl. S a v a n n a h Timmerman, Sierra Johnson, and Kaity Miller won Gold in the National Programs. Shannon Habel took home a silver medal in the National Programs. Lacey Jones and Davey Thom earned a bronze medal in Chapter Display. Reegan DeBruycker won a Gold medal in the Montana Food Producer category and was also awarded a $75 check from the M o n t a n a F C C L A Chapter. We are proud of you all. By Kaity Miller On May 18 rd and 19 th the Dutton/Brady High School Diamond Quartet consisting of Hailee VandenBos, Aubree Hitchcock, Natasha Pilgeram, and Taylor Reeve traveled to Great Falls for the District Music Festival. They sang All the Pretty Little Horses and Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burnin. The quartet earned a Superior I and the right to perform at the State Music Festival in Missoula May 3 rd and 4 th. Also, other events with ratings were Hailee s solo By the Bend of the River with an Excellent II rating and Taylor and Aubree s duet Spring Wind also earning an E x c e l l e n t I I. 9 Volume 3, Issue 8 SPORTS Page 9 BOYS TRACK TEAM DOES WELL IN CENTERVILLE By Trent Duty The DiamondBack boys high school track team competed quite well in the Centerville Quadrangular track meet. Lawrence Bryant placed 1 st in the 1600m with a time of 6:05, 2 nd in the 3200m with a time of 12:52, and 2 nd in the 800m with a time of 2:36. Matt Hitchcock got 4 th in the 400m with a time of 1:02 and 1 st in the 800m with a time of 2:21. Johnny Brubaker got 1 st in the 300m hurdles with a time of 45:17, 3 rd in the 200m with a time of 25:93, and 1 st in the 110m hurdles with a time of 18:24. David Shumway got 6 th in the discus at a distance of 75 7 and 5 th in the shot put at a distance of Hunter Proff placed 6 th in the 400m with a time of 1:13. Chase Rossmiller placed second in the high jump with a jump of 5 2 and 5 th in the 110 m hurdles with a time of 21 seconds. It was a rather small meet with Power and Simms the other teams attending the meet. The boys team swept the competition by 58 points with a total of 125 points. Simms came in second with 67 points and Power third with 47 points. The boys team did very well taking third place in the competition. There was very brisk competition at this meet, but Taylor Reeve still was able to get sixth place in the 800m run with a time of Taylor Reeve sailing over the bar at the Dutton/ Brady Invitational Track Meet. FIVE BOYS OUT FOR JR. HIGH TRACK By Trent Duty SEVEN GIRLS OUT FOR JR. HIGH TRACK By Trent Duty The Jr. High boys track team has five boys out this year. They are Eighth Graders Jace Rouns and Andru Fick and Seventh G r a d e r s O n n i e Tienhaara, Dylan Givens, and Aaron Infanger. They are coached by Brianna Dahlman. On April 8 th 2013, Jr. High Track practice started for the junior high students of Dutton/Brady. There are seven girls out this year. Seventh graders are Tasha R e e v e, C a s s i d y DeBruycker, Siera Proff. Sixth graders are Aria Johnson, Molly Wahl, Amber Suek, and Grace Feldman. Head Coach is Brianna Dahlman.
12 The DiamondBack Times Page 12 Career Day at Dutton/Brady By Lawrence Bryant On the afternoon of April 25, 2013, the school of Dutton/Brady had Career Day. Lincoln and Simms students participated as well. Prior to Career Day, the Dutton/Brady Jr. High and High School students took a test to determine their career interests. The different career areas we re Tran sport a t ion, Distribution & Logistics, S c i e n c e, T e c h n o l o g y, Engineering & Mathematics, Information Technology, Business, Management, and Administration, Marketing, Sales & Services, Social/ Human Services, Health, Law, Public Safety, Arts/ Communications, Agriculture/ N a t u r a l R e s o u r c e s, Manufacturing, Installation & Repair, Finance, and Architecture & Construction. There were fifty-four presenters. One of the most notable presenters was Katie Stukey, Executive Producer/Anchor at KRTV in Great Falls. She was very friendly, informative, and small! Even though Lincoln showed up a day ahead of time, the sessions went well and the students had the opportunity to gain some insight into possible future career choices. Career Day was organized by Mrs. Bishop. Back Row: Reegan, Kaity, Braxton Front Row: Katie Stukey, Shannon, Savannah, and Reporter Claire Anderson Students Attend Youth Symphony By Kaity Miller On April 4, 2013 the 3 rd - 6 th, the Junior High, and High School music students went to the Civic Center in Great Falls to the Youth Symphony of Peter and The Wolf and Marriage of Figaro. The students went to experience a large symphony playing live. The symphony was very good. There was also interesting art work created by elementary students that went with Peter and the Wolf. Ultimately, the students had a wonderful time and learned a lot.
