1 Volume 9, Number 2 www. alpost142.com legion@alpost142.com March, 2007 Hopefully about the time you read this, the trees will have been mostly planted and already the Post grounds look better. BUT, and that s a BIG BUT there are tons of work left to be done outside. Shrubbery needs to be planted, green islands to match the Cities drive entrances must be installed on both sides of the driveways. A small portion of asphalt has to be removed to accomplish this. In the area of the gravel parking lot most of the gravel has to be removed and soil and sod put down in it s place and in accordance with City Code NO PARKING will be allowed on the grass. Overflow parking will go into the City Parking Lot, as approved by the city. The paved portion of our parking area on the East side will be recoated and striped into side by side parking instead of the old parallel parking. This side by side method will give us some 19 spaces on the East side of the driveway allowing wide turning and back up room towards the building side of the driveway. There will be NO PARKING ALLOWED on the West side of the driveway. It will be a TOW AWAY ZONE at your expense as will the Fire Lane between the two buildings. The estimated cost is Twenty to Thirty-Thousand and the Booster Club will have been depleted by that time. What I am trying to say is we all must dig a little deeper into our pockets and build up the Booster Club Funds. We cannot stop now or the City will fine us. I would like to thank Rattlesnake for his help in repairing the shelf that fell apart in the cooler, we can always count on him to give a helping hand. Also thanks to Tank and Warren for closing in as best they could the trailer door. Next comes the Great Hall, George Rafajko and I got the idea from another 9th District Post and George did the reconstruction work, thanks to Auxiliary Unit 142 s donation and the help of Tom Thomas and Kenny, who is always willing to lend a helping hand. Thanks guys it is going to look great. When finished the flags will be anchored in such a manner as to prevent their being moved by renters and hidden as has been done in the past. We are proud of our flag and it is to remain in its place of honor regardless of the renters desires. What I am trying to ask you now is to think and try, try to dig a little deeper, if you have already given to the Booster Club maybe you could give some more, if you have not donated please do so now. For God and Country God Bless America Bob Hammes 1st Vice Commander s Message 2007 Car Draw This years sales are a little behind last year at this time. Have you bought your tickets yet? Just ask any bartender at the Post. They will be more than happy to sell you one, or two. If you can t get into the Post you can send me a check or money order for yours. Just make the check payable to the American Legion Post #142. Write on the Car Draw on the outside of the envelope and it will get to me. Remember, the band Black Diamond will be here and you will receive a roast beef dinner with your ticket purchase. Tickets cost each or 5 for Someone will win the 18,000 cash. Will it be you? When was the last time you have come to a meeting? The Legions meetings are the first Thursday of each month at 7pm. If you would like to change something at the Post, this is where to say it. We can t hear you from the bar or your home. Have some free time, want to meet some new people? There is always something you can volunteer for here. This Post belongs to every member. We need every members support all year long. Thank you. 3 Volume 9, Number 3 March 2007 Page 3 Chaplain s Report Happy St. Patricks Now as we look forward to many Events and improvements in this happy March of 2007, we feel very rewarded for all the progress that has been completed and look forward to many more completions of ongoing Programs now on the agenda. We are very thankful for all the help from the Membership we realize that without the cooperation and willingness of all that have contributed their time and efforts toward our Goals we would not be where we are today. Willing hands and hearts is what helps the Post achieve their future endeavors, This is our Post and we take great pride in seeing it prosper and when we see the good progress being made it gives one a warm and great feeling that we were part of the success of OUR POST!! Looking forward to the always fun-filled Baloon Bash and being an Irishman/Woman, if only for a Day. St. Paddy will feel real good that we celebrate his Day and that we honor his memory by the Wear in of the Green. So join us on that day for lots of laughs, singing and even a toast in the spirit of good Fellowship. As we go forward we must never forget our great Troops that are devoting their time and their lives so that we here at Home can enjoy the Freedoms that they are doing their duty and utmost effort to protect. May God Bless them and keep them safe for a joyous return to their loved ones so that they may know Peace in the Land once more. We Pray also, that those who have sacrificed their all will find Eternal Rest in Heaven where there is that wonderful Peace that only God can bestow. Rest In Peace fellow Veterans! You have paid the ultimate price and now you may live forever in God s Kingdom. I am happy to announce that we have finally taken the next step to getting our Post up to city code. As you all know, trees were removed without a permit and we are now paying the price. Fortunately, we have been able to work the City Engineer, the City Arborist and the Code Enforcement Officer over the last 7 months, and have finally come to an agreement as to what we must do to rectify the removal of the trees. We have applied for our permit and are now moving forward. Our Booster Club was never intended to pay for all that we must do, but was meant to help offset the costs to the Post. I am very proud of not only our members but also our friends of the Post that were able to give and make a big difference. For our 1 st project the Booster Club was able to cover almost the entire cost of the trees, planting and staking. We still have a long way to go as to the remainder of projects that must be completed to meet the requirements of the city. Please continue to donate to the Booster Club for this fiscal year. We will be starting a new board with the new members on July 1 st. The old board will be replaced with a permanent plaque for everyone to see and to show our Post 142 Booster Club Please continue to support the Booster Club. Become a member today. Thank you to all the members and friends of the Post that have contributed so far. Many of our veteran s rely on the wheelchairs, walkers etc. that are donated to the Post, but most recently we have been receiving donations left outside the back door, not only the normal wheelchairs and walkers, but also used clothing. It would be greatly appreciated that when donating any of these items they be in working order and brought inside so that they can be properly stored and not exposed to the elements. Please, we do not accept used clothing. Some of you might have noticed some activity going on in the Main Hall. Last July the Auxiliary made a substantial donation to the Post so the Main Hall could be renovated and be brought up to date. The project is now moving along and the differences are already noticeable. The sides of the stage, which have always been an eyesore, especially with the storage of tables and chairs, are now behind closed doors. We still have a lot of work to do so if you would like to join us and maybe swing a hammer to relieve some frustration or just share your knowledge you are more than welcome.
