1 Christ Episcopal Church Making a Difference The Mustard Seed June 2018 Christ Episcopal Church PO Box Plantation Rd. Lancaster, SC ***************** Episcopal@ comporium.net The Reverend cell ghamilton@ comporium.net lancaster.com ***************** Christ Church where we gather to worship, pray, sing, and share so together we may serve our community and the world. Be Still Ps. 46:11a Be still, then, and know that I am God; Ps. 62:6 For God alone my soul in silence waits; Truly, my hope is in him. In these times, it seems we are only still and our surroundings silent when we are asleep. Even then, many of us seem to require various sleep aids. In addition, many awake from sleep still tired, and often feeling overwhelmed. Frequently, our days are occupied with a variety of sights, sounds, and activities. Have we become so busy that we no longer have time for quiet reflection? Do we even care or wish to seek out solitude? Centuries ago, the author or authors of Psalms 46 and 62 wrote about the importance of being engaged by God in the silence. We seek God in Prayer, the Scriptures, Worship, music, and other activities: all of which may be very fruitful and life affirming. Yet, in 1 Kings Chapter 19, Elijah encounters God in the sheer silence, not in the earthquake or fire. Maybe if we take the time to be still, to be quiet and wait for God, we may be surprised at what God says to us. Peace,

There is a need at these two shelters for dinners each night to be provided by individuals or organizations. What a great way for us to step into our roles as disciples, that we have been talking about in SHIFT! Anyone interested in helping to cook and provide dinner to the shelters once or twice a month, please see me and we can discuss particulars of how we would like to proceed. Di Dworak

5 THE MUSTARD SEED Page 5 HOPE Sunday EVERY SUNDAY Each Sunday will be designated as HOPE Sunday at Christ Church. Please consider contributing to this wonderful organization. They are especially in need of the following items: Please bring non-perishable food to place in the shopping cart each Sunday.

6 THE MUSTARD SEED Page 6 At a recent Lancaster Breakfast Rotary Club Meeting, incoming club president, Pam Giardiello and Lancaster Police Chief Scott Grant help a contestant line up for a whack at the piñata. Can you guess who the contestant is? Hint: on his third try, he completely missed the piñata and narrowly missed the Chief! Please be much in prayer for. As many of you know, he suffered a recent fall and fractured his hip. Surgery was performed to help mend the hip. Based upon the progression of his cancer and the recovery time for the hip fracture, Tim has decided to forego any further treatment for cancer and enter hospice care. A decision is being made regarding a location for his hospice care (i.e. Orangeburg, Lancaster, New Bern.) We will keep you posted as soon as we get the information.

7 THE MUSTARD SEED Page 7 A very special thank you to all who donated undies or donated cash or Belk bucks for the purchase of undies for the girls at Our Little Roses in Honduras. Small things like that mean so much to the girls down there. One of course is the actual gift, but almost more important to these girls is that they were remembered by someone. Again thank y all. As post-modern Christfollowers, we realize that something has changed our experience tells us so, our intuition and feelings tell us so but we fail to understand the WHY? of what s happening in our congregations. The purpose of SHIFT is to help our understanding catch up with our experience. We need insights, information, and examples to make sense of the changes around us. SHIFT provides this kind of learning for clergy, church staff, and lay persons and a framework for integrating our mission to make, equip and send mature disciples of Christ. 1st Shift: Membership to Discipleship Modern Christians are members of a great many worthy activities, each completing for their time and attention. But the idea of church membership no longer appeals to many post-moderns. Many people participate in congregations for years without ever becoming a member. Still, there is great energy and growing enthusiasm around living as disciples of Jesus Christ. SHIFT describes this movement, along with examples of congregations living the Shift, followed by opportunities to explore application to the congregation. 2nd Shift: Attractional Church to Missional Church Let's face it most of our congregations really want people to come to the church campus. Being the hands and feet of Christ in the world is a nice thought, but we judge our success by how many people are in worship on Sunday. For better or worse, this measure of success, upon which the attractional church model was built, is quickly disappearing. Missional churches represent an old/new way forward for congregations, joining God s mission in the world. This approach means more than simply having a Missions Committee, it is a completely different way of being church. SHIFT describes this movement, along with examples of congregations living the Shift, followed by opportunities to explore application to the congregation. 3rd Shift: Church Consumers to Sacred Partners We live in a consumer society. Although we value the freedom to engage with whatever faith community to which we are led, a consumer perspective regarding church is damaging for individuals and for churched. Now, proactive congregations are recalling our roots, and engaging in Sacred Partnering, which emphasizes how Christians can achieve significant changes by supporting and working in relationship with one another. SHIFT describes this movement, along with examples of congregations living the Shift, followed by opportunities to explore application to the congregation. Making the Shift The Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina, in partnership with Pinnacle Leadership Associates, invites you to understand these three big shifts that are affecting the 21st Century Church:
