Wednesday Evening Service: November 21, 2018 William Byrd, 1623 John Merbecke, 1585 Thomas Tallis, 1585 Musicians Note: All baptized Christians are welcome to the Lord s Table in this place. You can stand or kneel at the altar rail. Extend a raised palm to receive a wafer, which you can either eat immediately or wait for a Eucharistic Minister to dip in the wine and place on your tongue. If you have eaten your bread when the chalice comes, hold the cup at the bottom and direct it to your mouth for a sip of wine. For those who do not wish to drink the wine, just cross your arms over your chest when the cup comes by. Stay at the altar rail as long as you wish.

2 OPENING SONG Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. COLLECT O God most glorious, whose praises are sung night and day by your saints and angels in heaven: We give you thanks for William Byrd, John Merbecke and Thomas Tallis, whose music has enriched the praise that your Church offers you here on earth. Grant, we pray, to all who are touched by the power of music such glimpses of eternity that we may be made ready to join your saints in heaven and behold your glory unveiled for evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. FIRST READING 1 Chronicles 15:16,19 25,28 A Reading from 1 Chronicles 15:16,19 25,28. David also commanded the chiefs of the Levites to appoint their kindred as the singers to play on musical instruments, on harps and lyres and cymbals, to raise loud sounds of joy. The singers Heman, Asaph, and Ethan were to sound bronze cymbals; Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah were to play harps according to Alamoth; but Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed-edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah were to lead with lyres according to the Sheminith. Chenaniah, leader of the Levites in music, was to direct the music, for he understood it. Berechiah and Elkanah were to be gatekeepers for the ark. Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, were to blow the trumpets before the ark of God. Obededom and Jehiah also were to be gatekeepers for the ark. So David and the elders of Israel, and the commanders of the thousands, went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from the house of Obed-edom with rejoicing. So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouting, to the sound of the horn, trumpets, and cymbals, and made loud music on harps and lyres. Reader: The Word of the Lord. And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mixed with fire, and those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name, standing beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands. And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb: Great and amazing are your deeds, Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, King of the nations! THE GOSPEL John 15:1 8 Jesus said, I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples." Gospeler: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. HOMILY/MEDITATION LITANY OF HEALING Let us name before God those for whom we offer our prayers. The People audibly name those for whom they are interceding. A Person appointed then leads the Litany. God the Father, your will for all people is health and salvation; We praise you and thank you, O Lord. God the Son, you came that we might have life, and might have it more abundantly; We praise you and thank you, O Lord. God the Holy Spirit, you make our bodies the temple of your presence; We praise you and thank you, O Lord. Holy Trinity, one God, in you we live and move and have our being;

5 We praise you and thank you, O Lord. Lord, grant your healing grace to all who are sick, injured, or disabled, that they may be made whole; Hear us, O Lord of life. Almighty God, giver of life and health: Send your blessing on all who are sick, and upon those who minister to them, that all weakness may be vanquished by the triumph of the risen Christ; who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. THE CONFESSION The Deacon or Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept. Minister and Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Bishop when present, or the Priest: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Celebrant now invites those who wish to receive the laying on of hands and anointing to come forward. The following anthem is sung or said Savior of the world, by your cross and precious blood you have redeemed us; Save us, and help us, we humbly beseech you, O Lord. The Celebrant says the following blessing over those who have come forward. The Almighty Lord, who is a strong tower to all who put their trust in him, to whom all things in heaven, on earth, and under the earth bow and obey: Be now and evermore your defense, and make you know and feel that the only Name under heaven given for health and salvation is the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. The Celebrant then lays hands on each person (and, having dipped a thumb in the oil of the sick, makes the sign of the cross on their foreheads), and says one of the following:

6 N., I lay my hands upon you [and anoint you with oil] in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, beseeching our Lord Jesus Christ to sustain you with his presence, to drive away all sickness of body and spirit, and to give you that victory of life and peace which will enable you to serve him both now and evermore. Amen. Or prayer may be offered for each person individually according to that person s need, with laying on of hands (and anointing). Lay persons with a gift of healing may join the celebrant in the laying on of hands. THE PEACE All stand. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Then the Ministers and People may greet one another in the name of the Lord. OFFERTORY PRESENTATION All things come of thee, O Lord; And of thine own have we given thee. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Eucharistic Prayer B The people remain standing. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because you are greatly glorified in the assembly of your saints. All your creatures praise you, and your faithful servants bless you, confessing before the rulers of this world the great Name of your only Son.

7 Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The people stand or kneel. We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, according to his command, O Father, Celebrant and We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with [. and] all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

8 THE LORD S PRAYER Celebrant and Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. THE FRACTION Then may be sung or said Celebrant and Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. The Gifts of God for the People of God. and may add Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. [Amen.] The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. [Amen.] POST COMMUNION PRAYER AND BLESSING Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours, utterly dedicated to you; and then use us, we pray, as you will, and always to your glory and the welfare of your people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. The Celebrant pronounces this blessing May God the Father bless you, God the Son heal you, God the Holy Spirit give you strength. May God the holy and undivided Trinity guard your body, save your soul, and bring you safely to his heavenly country; where he lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. You are asked to bring treats, sweet or savory, and a cold beverage. You will also be responsible for clean up after coffee hour. It gives us all a chance to host our fellow parishioners. There will be a sign up sheet on the bulletin board. Coffee has been provided by the church, but anyone who wishes to donate ground coffee at any time may do so. ========================================================= To start the year off right, we will be trying our best to go green. As of January 1st we are asking each of you to bring your own, easy to identify coffee mug. They will be stored in the credenza in the parlor. It will be there for you to use each Sunday; after use, please wash and return it to the shelf. There will be several cups available for visitors. It is our small way of helping the pollution of Gods earth, which he has entrusted us with. ========================================================= This year the poinsettias for the altar at the Christmas Eve Service have been donated to Christ Church. In place of asking for donations for the purchase of poinsettias, this year we are asking for donations to fund the SHIFT MINISTRY. These donations can be given in honor or in thanksgiving for those who you wish to remember. These honorariums will be printed in the Christmas Eve Service Bulletin. On the memo line of you check, please write shift. Anyone who would wish to bring a poinsettia is welcome to and may place it around the altar. This is a way to spread the spirit of Christmas to our community in the coming year.

10 ========================================================= In sharing the spirit of Thanksgiving with our neighbors down the street, we will be bringing to each home a gift of holiday bread. We would like to include a small homemade item left over from last year s bazaar and this year s pints and paws. At the same time we realize that these items were made and sold to obtain funds for redecorating the undercroft s bathrooms. We are asking for donations to be given in thanksgiving for the women s group and the work they do for our parish and also for our new relationship with our neighbors down the road. Donations can be made by check with Shift written on the memo line. ================================================================== Mike Sistare is in search of large grills to borrow to prepare Boston butts this year for the church's annual fundraiser. If you are in a position to loan Mike the use of your grill, please contact Mike or the church office. Thank you for your support!=============================================== On Sunday, December 2 nd, we will come together after the 10:30 service to celebrate our love and appreciation for Christ Church at a pot luck luncheon. Baked ham will be provided. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. Our fellowship is an important part of who we are, let us break bread together in thanksgiving!! ===================================================== ANGEL TREE In the spirit of Christmas, we will once again have our Angel Tree. Please take a tag or two and return UNWRAPPED gifts with the tag attached by Sunday December 16 th. As the saying goes Christmas is for kids, so let s make it merry for underprivileged children in our community. 11 ===================================================== A CAROLING WE SHALL GO In the spirit of Christmas and for a lot of fun, we will be going down the street on Dec 22 nd to Christmas Carol. What a great way to share the joy of the season and also have holiday fellowship with one another. We will meet at the church at 6 pm. Bring family and friends. We will return to the church for hot chocolate and holiday goodies. If you have other holidays events that evening please come and share this fellowship with us and then go on your way when needed. We look forward to making joyful noise together.
