4 THE PRINCIPLES OF THE SCOTTISH RITE Declaration of Principles by the Supreme Council of Sovereign Grand Inspectors General of the Thirty-Third and Last Degree of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the United States of America. THIS SUPREME COUNCIL reaffirms its unswerving loyalty to the fundamental purpose of Freemasonry, which purpose from time immemorial has been to improve and strengthen the character of the individual man, and through the individual, the character of the community, reinforcing those spiritual and moral values which give the community its strength and stability. This Supreme Council believes that this purpose is to be attained by laying a broad basis of principle upon which men of every race, country, sect, and opinion may unite. Believing that good and true men can be trusted to act well and wisely, this Supreme Council considers it the duty of the Fraternity to impress upon its members the principles of personal righteousness and personal responsibility, to enlighten them as to those things which make for human welfare, and to inspire them with that feeling of charity, or well-wishing, toward all mankind which will move them to translate principle and conviction into action. To that end, Freemasonry requires of its members a belief in God and encourages faith in God s divine purposes and worship of God in conformity with the dictates of individual conscience. It stands for truth and justice, liberty and enlightenment, fraternity and philanthropy. This Supreme Council expects of its members strict obedience to the laws of the land, and respect for their country s flag. Such principles unite men and encourage the pursuit by them individually and collectively of worthy endeavors and the attainment of the purposes inherent in them. In that unity human character achieves its highest unfolding and provides man s best hope for peace on earth and good will among men. To the furtherance of these principles, all our ritual is directed and all our efforts are aimed. To their furtherance each Master Mason has pledged himself, and at the portal of the Scottish Rite has renewed that pledge. This Supreme Council discountenances and rejects any attempt by any international groups or confederations of Scottish Rite Supreme Councils to legislate for individual Supreme Councils. Recognizing that principles unite men, that programs sometimes divide them, and that the preservation of unity of purpose and devotion to principle is essential to Freemasonry, the Supreme Council affirms its continued adherence to that ancient and approved rule of Freemasonry which forbids the discussion within tyled doors of creeds, politics, or other topics apt to excite personal animosities. This Supreme Council further affirms its conviction that it is not only contrary to the fundamental principles of Freemasonry, but exceedingly dangerous to its unity, strength, usefulness and welfare for Masonic Bodies in their official capacity to take formal action or attempt to exercise pressure or influence for or against any particular legislative project or proposal, or in any way to attempt to procure the election or appointment of Governmental officials, whether executive, legislative, or judicial or to influence them, whether or not members of the Fraternity, in the performance of their official duties. Adopted September 20, 1923 Reaffirmed September 27, 1934 Affirmed September 18, 1929 Revised September 23, 1969 Revised September 21,
5 A MESSAGE TO CANDIDATES You are about to begin your pilgrimage through the Scottish Rite Degrees and it may become to you one of the greatest and most inspiring experiences of your life. If you become a Prince of the Royal Secret by receiving the Thirty-Second Degree and are no better than when you began your adventure, your investment of time and money will have been in vain. If, however, you bring a receptive mind and a sensitive heart to these degrees you will indeed be a wiser and a better man. Many men have been reborn, intellectually and spiritually, during the conferring of these Degrees. It is the hope and prayer of the Brethren that your experiences may be rich and significant. While each of you will be a guest of the Scottish Rite bodies, you are requested, nevertheless, to observe certain regulations and to cooperate closely with the class marshals so that confusion and delay may be avoided as far as possible. A definite time schedule is necessary and can only be maintained through the cooperation of all, including each and every candidate. A full program of degree exemplifications has been scheduled and a concerted effort has been made to present these degrees in a manner that will be an inducement to our candidates, as well as to our members, to return many times in the future to witness our Scottish Rite degrees. Through the use of authentic costuming, realistic scenery, effective lighting, music and the beautiful language of the ritual, these degrees become highly dramatic presentations which certainly should inspire and enable everyone who witnesses them with an open heart and open mind to have a better understanding of the precepts of Freemasonry as a way of life and a deeper concept of his responsibilities as a man and a Mason. This, we believe, is highly important because at a time when the time-tested principles that are so dear to Masons everywhere and that are so fundamental to our American way of life are being seriously challenged and threatened, the need for a better understanding of the precepts of Freemasonry and a more determined resolve to carry our Masonic light into the world becomes increasingly urgent. We always look forward to each Scottish Rite Reunion as an opportunity to greet old friends and to make new and lasting acquaintances, and let us never forget or underestimate the value of true friendships. As we are taught in one of our degrees, life without friends, indeed, is worthless. We sincerely hope you will avail yourselves of the opportunity at this Reunion to rededicate your lives to the precepts of our beloved Fraternity and assure you we shall endeavor to make your attendance both enjoyable and rewarding. In that connection, we are particularly anxious to make this Reunion one of the best ever in every respect. FRATERNALLY, CARL E. FENSTERMACHER, 33, Thrice Potent Master LARRY E. SHEATS, Sovereign Prince PATRICK N. MAYNARD, Most Wise Master GREGORY C. WENRICH, 33, Commander-in-Chief ATTEST: STEPHEN M. WERTZ, Secretary 3

34 MEMBERSHIP Membership is the lifeblood of our fraternity. In the past years, this lifeblood has been draining away by deaths, demits, and indifference. We need the Brethren to be awakened to the needs of our fraternity. Each Brother must carry the word to other members and be concerned enough to petition new Masons. Each Brother must impart his enthusiasm to other Masons so that the Membership Committee may realize its mission. As committee members we cannot continue to carry alone the burden of obtaining new members for the Valley. We must work to combat the indifference of some of our Brethren and band together to perpetuate the ideals of our craft. The very survival of Scottish Rite Masonry in general and the Valley of Williamsport in particular is dependent upon the Membership Committee getting its message across to the membership. New petitions are needed to fill the ever increasing voids in our ranks. The Membership Committee has a formidable task ahead. The Valley of Williamsport has been given the task of 0 or above net members by the year What that means is that the gains in membership (new members and restorations to membership) must balance the losses in membership (deaths, nonpayment of dues, and demits.) Our research shows that our Valley must at least quadruple the size of each of our classes in order to come close to attaining this five-year membership goal. We have our work cut out for us. We must encourage membership in the Blue Lodges and then encourage the seeking of more light by making the petitioning of the Scottish Rite bodies as attractive as possible. We must be pro-active in our approach with regard to membership. We cannot sit back and not try new things just because we never did it that way before. We control the very lifeblood of our fraternity; that lifeblood must reach out to all of the members so that each member of the Valley of Williamsport becomes a representative of the Membership Committee. MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE RESPONSIBILITIES PRIME RESPONSIBILITY To promote Scottish Rite Masonry and gain new members for the Valley of Williamsport INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITIES Each member of the Membership Committee is responsible to: Set a good Masonic example Actively promote Scottish Rite Masonry Seek eligible Master Masons Generate enthusiasm within the Valley Provide good leadership 32
