1 SANTA MARIA FAIRBORN COUNCIL #3724 KNIGHTS of COLUMBUS **Star Council , and ** FRATERNAL YEAR CHARTERED IN OCTOBER 1953 July 2018 Brothers, Grand Knight s Corner The Knight of the Year Dinner in June right before father s day was a great way to finish the fraternal year. Worthy PGK Gazzerro was honored and for those of you reading this who possibly were not aware, Bill represented Council 3724 as both the State and Diocese Knight of the Year. Christy s Catering again provided the food and I can honestly say no one went home hungry. Bill thank you for the example of Knighthood that you set, none of us our perfect but the love and esteem evident in your family who were present at the dinner is heartwarming. We are gearing up for the new fraternal year by jumping right into the month of July with the parade on the 4 th as well as the council grill out that follows. Serving as your Grand Knight this last year has definitely been an experience and I hope the lessons learned this year serve me in the coming year so I can serve you better. Lord knows the last two years have been particularly challenging for me on many fronts. I have at times feared for my physical health, and my spiritual well-being and brothers without going into detail this next fraternal year promises more of the same. You ve all heard me say one of the reasons I love being a Knight is that it gives me a chance to surround myself with men who share the same core beliefs and values that I do. The bond of a common faith can many times serve as a temporary bulwark against the tides that seek to wear us down and erode our spirit. George Washington was heard to say, Associate with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation. For it is better to be alone than in bad company. I can think of no better description for the fraternity of brotherhood that is Council 3724 Fairborn Knights of Columbus. My Knight of the Month was worthy PGK Steve Wal, who serves not only as our worthy lounge manager, but also admirably serves as Advocate for our council and a worthy consigliere to your Grand Knights. Steve does a lot behind the scenes for the council and this is a long overdue recognition from me. My family of the month John and Myrna Gazzerro are one of those families who do a lot in the community promoting the values of the Catholic Faith and Charity through their own example of good works. Many of the families of some of our Knights who are still working are heavily involved in works of charity and their faith and many don t receive the recognition that they probably should. I ve said it before you don t have to come to a business meeting to be considered an active knight. You have to live the faith and yes pay your dues, but living the faith is key. 2 ACTIVITIES INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE AND PICNIC Members of the Council, along with 4th Degree members of Monsignor Buckley Assemble will once again march in the Fairborn Independence Day Parade. As always our entry will consist of a truck and a trailer and we ll gather at the hall to decorate it at 8:00 AM on the 4th. We have to be in our place in the parade line by 9:00 AM. Since the location varies every year, either meet up at the Hall before we leave or call PGK if you can t find us. As usual, you are welcome to ride in the truck or trailer. Some of us will also walk. After the parade, we ll have our annual Council Family Picnic back at the Hall. Meat, bread and beverages will be provided by the Council. Please bring a covered dish of your choice to share. We ll have a few games and a lot of fellowship and good times for the whole family. We ll start to gather about 2:00. As always, there will be brown bag Bingo after food. MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS Men of Faith All men of the parish are invited to visit the Men of Faith Fellowship held on First and Third Saturdays from 8-9 a.m. at St Francis Hall. Come early for a bagel & hot coffee. We begin with a couple of songs led by choir members (guitar - 1or2, voice and harmonica) followed by prayer and petitions. We read and share insights / questions about the coming Sunday's Readings - a great way to prepare for Mass! We close with another song and prayer. You are most welcome - it is like home - an open and safe place to share... Contact Tom Boland ( ) or JC Kelly, (937) MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT The council s Golf Tournament held in memory of numerous brother knights who used the game of golf to foster unity and brotherhood will be held on Saturday, August 11th, at the Locust Hills GC in Springfield. Shotgun start time is 8:30AM. The cost for this 4-man scramble for members and their guests is $60 each which pays for your green fees, cart, dinner, refreshments and prizes. A mulligan package, skins game, and 50/50 drawing will also be available. Locust Hills will serve your choice of steak or ½ chicken dinner for. dinner. Tournament chairman, PGK Steve Wal, will take your reservation at or sign up in the council lounge. Come join us for some friendly competition, fun, and remembrance with your brother knights at Locust Hills on Saturday, August 11th. IT S FESTIVAL TIME The MHC festival is July 20, 21, 22. As usual, some of your brothers could use your help. The following Knights are chairing booths and are looking for workers. 4 HOME CORPORATION Your Home Corp continues to work hard to support the Council. The Directors met on 21 June to pay bills and discuss business. We have decided that due to the Council providing help with the renovation of the church, that we will not hold any work parties until that renovation is finished. If you have some time to spare, please consider helping out with the many tasks the Council is performing to help with the church rehab. Please keep an eye on the Santa Maria for upcoming events in the coming months. Our monthly raffle winners were: 1st Place: Bob Brandstetter, $40 Ticket #104 2nd Place: Jim McCoy, $25 Ticket #077 3rd Place: Dave Davis, $10 Ticket #178 The new tickets for our 37 month drawing are available. This is the best multi-draw raffle in the business. We pay, on average, five dollars more a month than most other raffles and we have the special $50 drawing in July. Since Home Corp President PGK Milliron has been appointed as our new FS, he can no longer serve as a HC director. Please consider stepping up to fill this void. MEMBERSHIP As we start a new Fraternal year we are told that Supreme has revised their Program Guidance. Membership is the second part of Fraternalism. For a long time I have not followed the guidance to establish a Membership Committee. This has been a fatal error. I have been asking members to be part of this committee. If I have not asked you yet, please talk to me. My plan is to have a brief meeting on the third or fourth Thursday of each month. I will prepare an agenda for each meeting and it to committee members who are encouraged to comment on and suggest additional items. No comment or suggestion will be ignored. I know we have six good and faithful members of Fairborn Council who will want to be part of this new success. Our first meeting will be on July 19 in the meeting room at 7:30. See you there. 4

6 INSURANCE CORNER What Happens If You Live? The Security of Long-Term Care Insurance We re living a lot long than our ancestors. But living longer can also mean added responsibilities and concerns. Such as: what happens if we live? Insurance is all about what ifs What if we die? What if we get in an accident? What if we get sick? But how much have you thought about what happens if you live? That s where long-term care insurance comes into play. I know you think you won t need long-term care, but the statistics tell a different story 70 percent of individuals over the age of 65 will need some type of long-term care services during their lifetime. Paying out-of-pocket for long-term care is neither brief nor cheap. The average duration of long-term care needed per individual is three years, at an annual cost of $83,000 for private nursing home care and $60,000 for at-home nursing care.* Traditional and government medical insurance programs don t usually provide enough help, either. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, Medicare only pays for long-term care services for a maximum of 100 days, and that s only if you meet certain criteria. Medicaid does pay for long-term care, but only if your income is below a certain level and you meet state requirements. As for employer-sponsored or private health insurance plans, they typically cover a limited range of services, similar to that provided by Medicare. * So if we do need long-term care, many of us are left drawing from our own resources to cover the costs and it often happens right when we need our resources most at retirement. That s why long-term care insurance should be considered part of an overall sound insurance protection strategy, and that s why the Knights of Columbus is proud to offer long-term care insurance to our members and their eligible family members. There are many other factors and considerations that go into the crafting of a Knights of Columbus long-term care policy. I can help explain your options. At 10:00 pm on the meeting night and at 9:30 pm on the other Thursdays there s a random drawing from our membership pool. 8 THE STORY OF THE FOURTH OF JULY The Declaration of Independence We celebrate American Independence Day on the Fourth of July every year. We think of July 4, 1776, as a day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. But July 4, 1776 wasn't the day that the Continental Congress decided to declare independence (they did that on July 2, 1776). It wasn t the day we started the American Revolution either (that had happened back in April 1775). And it wasn't the day Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence (that was in June 1776). Or the date on which the Declaration was delivered to Great Britain (that didn't happen until November 1776). Or the date it was signed (that was August 2, 1776). So what did happen on July 4, 1776? The Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, They'd been working on it for a couple of days after the draft was submitted on July 2nd and finally agreed on all of the edits and changes. July 4, 1776, became the date that was included on the Declaration of Independence, and the fancy handwritten copy that was signed in August (the copy now displayed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.) It s also the date that was printed on the Dunlap Broadsides, the original printed copies of the Declaration that were circulated throughout the new nation. So when people thought of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776 was the date they remembered. In contrast, we celebrate Constitution Day on September 17th of each year, the anniversary of the date the Constitution was signed, not the anniversary of the date it was approved. If we d followed this same approach for the Declaration of Independence we d being celebrating Independence Day on August 2nd of each year, the day the Declaration of Independence was signed! How did the Fourth of July become a national holiday? For the first 15 or 20 years after the Declaration was written, people didn t celebrate it much on any date. It was too new and too much else was happening in the young nation. By the 1790s, a time of bitter partisan conflicts, the Declaration had become controversial. One party, the Democratic-Republicans, admired Jefferson and the Declaration. But the other party, the Federalists, thought the Declaration was too French and too anti- British, which went against their current policies. By 1817, John Adams complained in a letter that America seemed uninterested in its past. But that would soon change. After the War of 1812, the Federalist Party began to come apart and the new parties of the 1820s and 1830s all considered themselves inheritors of Jefferson and the Democratic-Republicans. Printed copies of the Declaration began to circulate again, all with the date July 4, 1776, listed at the top. The deaths of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams on July 4, 1826, may even have helped to promote the idea of July 4 as an important date to be celebrated. Celebrations of the Fourth of July became more common as the years went on and in 1870, almost a hundred years after the Declaration was written, Congress first declared July 4 to be a national holiday as part of a bill to officially recognize several holidays, including Christmas. Further legislation about national holidays, including July 4, was passed in 1939 and
