1 SEANC District 3 Volume 25 Issue 2 District 3 Awards Scholarships Ellen Hayes Alden Lee SEANC District 3 awarded scholarships to two deserving individuals this year, one of whom also won at the state level. Ellen Hayes was the recipient of the Andy Kirby Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 and was also was selected to receive $500 as a winner in the Member Only category from the statewide scholarship program. Hayes, a Registered Nurse at Avery Mitchell Correctional Institution, is pursuing a Master s Degree at East Tennessee State University to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. Alden Lee was selected as a scholarship winner in the Merit category (four-year college) in the amount of $500. A recent graduate of Watauga High School, Lee will attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte this fall to pursue a career in Cyber Security.

2 11TH ANNUAL LOIS W. FORRESTER MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT A SUCCESS The 11 th Annual Lois W. Forrester Memorial Golf Tournament, sponsored by District 3 of the State Employees Association of North Carolina, was held May 12, 2016, at Boone Golf Club. The tournament has been named in memory of Lois W. Forrester. Lois was very active in SEANC at the state level and locally in District 3, and she was founder of District 3 s annual golf tournament. Lois courageously battled cancer, and this tournament is named in her honor to memorialize her commitment and love for her family, friends, community, and SEANC. It was a great day for golf, and there were eleven teams participating. Events such as this support local community service activities and the local and state SEANC scholarship funds. This fund provides scholarships, locally and across the state, to active and associate SEANC members, their spouses and children, to attend technical schools, community colleges, trade schools, junior colleges or four-year colleges or universities on a full-time basis. 7 Awards, Guest Speakers Highlight 2016 Annual Meeting District 3 held its annual meeting on June 28 at the Fairway Café at the Boone Golf Course. Each SEANC district holds an annual meeting at which special presentations are made and important business is conducted, including voting on Bylaws amendments, Policy Platform proposals, and officers for the upcoming year. An important part of District 3 s efforts to serve the interests of Avery, Mitchell, and Watauga Counties includes significant community service and funding of scholarships for local students. At the annual meeting, District 3 was proud to present a check in the amount of $625 to the Western Youth Network (WYN). WYN invests in the lives of children and youth in order to build a better future and a stronger community for the High Country. The money will enable a fiscally challenged youth to attend the WYN Summer Program, a 5-week summer day camp that encourages participants to challenge themselves through adventure-based activities in a supportive and supervised environment. District 3 Member Strength Mike Waters gives check for $625 to Wes Berry, Western Youth Network Director of Development Also present at the meeting were scholarship awardees Ellen Hayes, Alden Lee, and their families. Hayes and Lee spoke briefly about how the scholarships will help support their academic pursuits.

8 A special presentation was given by a candidate for the Office of NC State Treasurer, Dale Folwell. SEANC s political action committee, EMPAC, has endorsed Folwell as one who would best represent the interests of state employees and retirees.
