2 Pastor s Message July 2018 For those of you who were able to be in church on Sunday you can stop reading now because I am going to share the points from my sermon Lord, don t you care? I want to share these words with you because I believe many of us are afraid that God doesn t care what is happening in this world and in our own lives. It is easy to trust and believe when everything is going well, and our prayers are being answered the way we want. But when things get difficult we question God s love and care. God s plan for our lives many times is different in what we want but His plan is always for our best. Remember how difficult parenting can be and our children didn t understand when we told them NO or didn t allow them to do something they were so sure was the right thing but as an adult with more knowledge and experience we knew it could hurt them. They questioned our love for them in those times, but we held firm because we saw the whole picture. That s the way it is with God s love for us. He has more knowledge than us and He sees the whole picture and what lays ahead, so His answer is Not Now, or maybe even NO. Through it all though God never leaves us, He is right there as we go through the storms of life. I will close with this story about a little boy and his father. A little boy was eagerly looking forward to the birthday party of a friend who lived only a few blocks away. When the day finally arrived, a blizzard made the sidewalks and roads nearly impassable. The boy s father, sensing the danger, hesitated to let his son go. The youngster reacted tearfully. "But Dad," he pleaded, "all the other kids will be there. Their parents are letting them go." The father thought for a moment, then replied softly, "All right, you may go." Surprised but overjoyed, the boy bundled up and plunged into the raging storm. The driving snow made visibility almost impossible, and it took him more than half an hour to trudge the short distance to the party. As he rang the doorbell, he turned briefly to look out into the storm. His eye caught the shadow of a retreating figure. It was his father. He had followed his son's every step to make sure he arrived safely. Look around God is in the shadow of your storm and He is watching over you. Blessings Pastor Dottie
3 SESSION MINUTES June 19, 2018 The Session took the following actions: 1. Agreed not to meet during July 2018 unless a special meeting is called. 2. Approved the request from Head Start for them to install door closers on the Head Start classroom doors. 3. Granted permission to the Outreach Committee to establish a Pantry Box outside the Cole Street entrance of the church building. 4. Approved the recommendation to request the church lawyer to send a legal letter to Ms. Erma Shaffer, owner of the property at 1211 West High Street, Lima, Ohio informing her that the church feels it is a hazard to repair and race go-karts on church property. After consulting with our insurance company and law enforcement agencies the activity is considered to be trespassing and should not be permitted. 5. Approved the termination of the contract with the agency Guiding Light for the houses at 1130 & 1132 West Market Street effective June 30, This is in accordance with the Occupancy Agreement dated June 14, Items of information discussed but no official actions necessary: 1. Set December 9, 2018 as a tentative date for the Colonial Christmas Tea. 2. Set July 1, 2018 as a pot luck carry-in dinner for the Hospitality Committee s activity for July. 3. Need for courtyard greeters were discussed. Sign-up sheet on bulletin board next to nursery. 4. Rev. Dottie Kaiser reviewed how South Side Church solved their financial dilemma. 5. Jim Harriman reviewed Market Street Presbyterian Church s finances with the Session. **************************** CHURCH PICNIC Sunday, July 1, 2018 This coming Sunday, Market Street Presbyterian Church will be having a Church Picnic downstairs in the Fellowship Hall hosted by The Hospitality Committee. 4 MISSIONS OUR PROJECTS The timing of the completion and shipping of our 30 Hygiene Kits was right on!! Weather disasters, fires, and volcanic eruptions in our country and others will make them even more important to those who receive them! I heard one of the newscasters say, "These people have nothing, not even a washcloth!" I have often attempted to put myself in their shoes and know I would long for a toothbrush and the materials to wash! Thank you all for your contributions and know that you are doing the Lord's work by helping others. In the month of July and first half of August we will be working with the Salvation Army to gather school supplies. You all know how important it is to a child to have new pencils, crayons, and paper to begin the school year. New pointy crayons were always one of my favorite things. We are publishing the list of articles requested and hoping you will all join in to help. School supply sales will be coming soon!! Sad news! Guiding Light s attempt to use 1130 and 1132 W. Market has not achieved the success for which we had all hoped. Small problems became large ones with personal life problems for Julianne Frankhouser. She continues to operate 3 homes for women and doing great work helping them. Guiding Light will therefore be vacating these properties on or before June 30th. I hope we will all keep Julianne and her organization in our prayers as they continue God's work in our community. Your mission committee will continue to work finding the right mission use for these properties. Thank you for those who worked so hard to prepare and sustain this mission for us, Natalie Heil and Diane Gallaher most especially. The Missions project for July and first week of August will be collecting school supplies. Supplies needed are: backpacks, plastic school box, scissors, glue sticks, pencils, glue bottles, dry erase markers, pocket folders, pink erasers, ruler, highlighters, Crayola crayons, loose leaf wide-ruled paper, 3 ring binders, protractor, colored pencils, and anything kids would need for back to school. The Lima City Schools, the Salvation Army & other local groups will present a Back 2 School Celebration on Tuesday, August 14 th from 4:00 6:00 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Park. Here are a few of the events that will be going on that day: free school supplies, cookout with free food, free Spartan gear, chatting with school officials, and games and activities with Spartan athletes. For more information, contact the Salvation Army at , ext Karen Jarvis for the Mission Committee CHURCH WOMEN UNITED ************************** The Church Women United will host a picnic at Herman Woods on N. Kemp Rd. on Friday, July 13, Gathering begins at 5:30 p.m. Sandwiches and drinks will be furnished, so please bring food to share. There will be time to walk the trails for those who wish to do so. If you need more information, please call Jane at or Phyllis at
5 Pastor Dottie Kaiser will be preaching this month. If you have any pastoral concerns, please call the church office at during Monday Thursday from 8:30 am 5:00 pm or contact Pastor Dottie at (cell) or (home). If no answer, please leave a message. COURTYARD GREETERS!!! We are in need of people to greet at the Courtyard door. Time to be there: 10:15 to 10:30 on Sunday morning. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board next to the nursery. Hello Dottie and our Market Street Church family, We want to thank everyone for your prayers for safe travels. We arrived safely in Edmonton on Thursday evening. It was a very long ride. We stopped at Yellowstone National park and spent 2 days in the park. On Tuesday morning in the parking lot at the Buffalo Bill Dam the car blew a gasket and we lost steering. Luckily, Cornelius could see where the problem was and it only took him a few minutes to repair the gasket once they towed the car into town. God was once again so good to us that it did not happen on the mountain pass. Please send our regards and love to all the Market Street people. Susara and Cornelius. Health Corner Blackberry Nutritional Value: 1 cup of blackberries contains 60 calories and 8 grams of dietary fiber. Blackberries are also good sources of vitamins like calcium and iron.
