3 Pastoral Ponderings 3 ˈadˌvent/ 1. the arrival of a notable person, thing, or event. 2. the first season of the Christian church year, leading up to Christmas and including the four preceding Sundays. 3. the coming, or the second coming, of Christ. It s hard to believe that Advent is here already. I don t know about your household, but mine is definitely not ready yet. I haven t yet excavated the decorations from the garage, bought presents, baked cookies, or hung even a strand of lights. There just hasn t been time in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I don t expect it to get better. I suppose it s good that we re given four weeks of preparation time, because I certainly need it. The truth is I really look forward to Advent. It is wonderful to have a reason not to enter the insanity of the secular celebration of consumerism. Don t get me wrong, we certainly buy presents galore to stuff under the tree. But I also feel like I have an excuse to slow down a bit and remind myself that the rush and froth of Christmas is not what Christmas is about. I had hoped to host Advent services at Faith this year, but scheduling conflicts will prevent it. We will try again next year. But I will still have my own Advent rituals to help remind me to slow down and breathe. I will light the candles on our Advent wreath each evening. The kids and I will sing an Advent hymn, and say a prayer. We may even use a devotional. Of course, we will also punch out the next window on the Advent calendar to see what kind of little chocolate pops out for today, but I am convinced that God loves chocolate, too, and understands our need for secular rituals, as well as religious ones. Regardless of how your household marks the passing of the days, our hope for you is that you will do so in anticipation of the coming of the Christ into this world. Each day of Advent, we are reminded that God comes to us, sometimes in forms that are unexpected and even scandalous, but God comes. The excitement and anticipation of presents under the tree is fun, but it s nothing compared to the gift of a God who loves us enough to walk among us. May your Advent be a blessed time of preparation, of expectation, of hope, and of joy. -Pastor Emily
