1 THE WEEKLY MESSENGER 1358 South Lake Drive Lexington, SC Week of October 15, 2017 The 20 th Sunday after Pentecost Does an elected official in the United States have to be a Christian to please God? Back in the 1960 presidential election many were very concerned that John F. Kennedy was a Roman Catholic! Barak Hussein Obama has a Muslim sounding name and a great deal of angst crossed the national psyche about the possibility that this church-going man might be a religious plant, a mole, so to speak. Bernie Sanders, one of the Democratic candidates in the last election is Jewish and that raised eye-brows. The list could go on. In the Isaiah text for this Sunday, we hear how God appointed Cyrus, the King of Persia, to restore Israel. He wasn t Jewish at all! Then Jesus in our gospel lesson seems to affirm the right of Rome to collect taxes on Jews by talking about what most would call a graven image! How does Scripture help us think about political leadership? Come and talk about that this Sunday! We think of ourselves not as a separate church but a reform movement within the catholic (universal) church continually challenging all Christians and ourselves to be ever vigilant in our proclamation of the Gospel, that it be pure and on point for the times in which we live. Come celebrate with a fair, with food and a hymn sing!
