Wayne Smith, 33 Independence Day As we celebrate the birth of our great Nation on the 4 th of July, frequently with barbecues, picnics, parades and fireworks shows with our families and Brothers, it seems to me that we should remember our beginnings and our founding fathers. During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia. After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4. From the outset, Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin all later wrote that they had signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration. Although not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, James Monroe, the Fifth President of the United States, died on July 4, Calvin Coolidge, the Thirtieth President, was born on July 4, 1872, and thus was the only President to be born on Independence Day. In doing a little research I came across the following and commend it to you to consider as we celebrate. "Remember me? Some people call me Old Glory, others call me the Star Spangled Banner. But whatever they call me, I am your Flag. The Flag of the United States of America. Something has been bothering me, so I thought I might talk it over with you. I remember some time ago, people lined up on both sides of the street to watch the parade, and naturally I was always there, proudly waving in the breeze. When your daddy saw me coming, he immediately removed his hat and placed it over his heart, remember? And you, I remember you standing there, straight as a soldier. You didn't have a hat but you were giving the right salute. Remember your little sister, not to be outdone, she was saluting the same as you, with her hand over her heart, remember? What happened? I'm still the same old Flag. Oh, a few more stars have been added since you were a boy, and a lot more blood has been shed since the parades of long ago. But I don't feel as proud as I used to. When I come down your street you just stand there with your hands in your pockets. I may get a small glance, but then you look away. I see the children running around and shouting. They don't seem to know who I am. I saw one man take off his hat and look around. He did- (Continued on page 2)

2 (Continued from page 1) n't see anyone else with his hat off, so he quickly put it back on. Is it a sin to be patriotic anymore? Have you forgotten what I stand for and where I've been? Anzio, Normandy, Omaha Beach, Guadalcanal, Korea and Vietnam. Take a look at the names on the Memorial Honor Roll sometime. Look at the names of those who never came back in order to keep this Republic free. One Nation Under God. When you were saluting me you were actually saluting them. Well, it won't be long until I'll be coming down your street again, so when you see me, stand straight, place your right hand over your heart. I'll salute you by waving back, and I'll know that you remembered." (This tribute was published in the May-June 1989 issue of "The Sojourner." MASONIC MEMBERSHIP CARD Submitted by WB John Mathers I hold in my hand a little scrap of paper 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches in size. It is of no intrinsic worth, not a bond, not a check or receipt for valuables, yet it is my most priceless possession. It is my membership card in a Masonic Lodge. It tells me that I have entered into a spiritual kinship with my fellow Masons to practice charity in word and deed; to forgive and forget the faults of my brethren; to hush the tongues of scandal and innuendo; to care for the crippled, the hungry and the sick, and to be fair and just to all mankind. It tells me that no matter where I may travel in the world, I am welcome to visit a place where good fellowship prevails among brothers and friends. It tells me that my loved ones, my home, and my household are under the protection of every member of this great Fraternity, who have sworn to defend and protect mine as I have sworn to defend and protect theirs. It tells me that should I ever be overtaken by adversity or misfortune through no fault of my own, the hands of every Mason on the face of the earth will be stretched forth to assist me in my necessities. And finally, it tells me that when my final exit from the stage of life has been made, there will be gathered around my lifeless body, friends and brothers who will recall to mind my virtues, though they be but few, and will forget my faults, though they may be many. It tells me that, and a great deal more, this little card, and makes me proud yet humble, that I can possess this passport into a Society of Friends and brothers that are numbered in the millions. SO MOTE IT BE!! 3 Masonic Outreach Services A Program of the Grand Lodge of Washington By Mary Craves Hollands, Director of Outreach Services When Robert and Anne bought their family home thirty years ago, their plan was to live through retirement in this home. They had furnished their home with refurbished antiques acquired from their many trips together. It was one of their cherished antique coffee tables that Robert tripped over, breaking his hip. Now with his return from the hospital in a wheelchair, the overwhelming task of making their home accessible for Robert s wheelchair fell on Anne. Remodeling for wheelchair accessibility, organizing home furnishings and daily living items or downsizing and relocating to a smaller living area are monumental tasks that are many times thrust on senior home owners. Sometimes the need to do this is brought on by injury or age related illness. Home and yard maintenance can become a daunting chore for even the healthiest of seniors, requiring them to make a downsizing decision. There is a large and growing industry of specialists who understand these challenges of senior homeowners and are ready and willing to help with remodeling, organizing or the sale of the home and with the move to a new location. Here are some of the professionals available to help: A professional organizer provides assistance in making the home safe and manageable. Relocating furniture, removing hazards such as electrical cords, throw rugs, heavy objects on shelves that might fall are some of the ways they make a home safer. They specialize in helping seniors part with items to make rooms less crowded or to get ready for a move to a smaller living arrangement. Handicap remodeling services and senior safety services offer help in adding wheelchair ramps and widening doorways. Bathrooms are made more accessible and safe, with hand rails, walk-in bath facilities and easier access to toilets. If a move to a smaller retirement home or care facility is the best solution there is another senior specialist to call on, the Senior Real Estate Specialist. The Senior Real Estate Specialist provides a complete service package for the sale of the property and/or the purchase of a new living arrangement. This specialist also arranges for the services of a relocation specialist or Senior Move Manager to provide a complete, stress-free move for the senior homeowner. A move often requires downsizing and getting rid of a tremendous number of acquired possessions. The Senior Move Manager will help the homeowner assess and identify items to keep, arrange for an auction or other disposal, clean the home, move the belongings and set them up in the new residence. In addition, the Senior Move Manager coordinates with the Real Estate Specialist and the relocating senior to ensure a smooth transition. Although there is no higher degree than that of Master Mason, the 29 degrees of the Scottish Rite serve to enrich the philosophy of the Symbolic Lodge. A Mason who chooses to further his Masonic experience by becoming a 32 Scottish Rite Mason will be expanding upon the fundamental principles of Freemasonry. The moral and ethical lessons will allow him to be constantly reminded of his duty to God, Family, Country, and Fellow Man.
