2 Everett Valley of Scottish Rite Mentoring Program By William A. Isabelle 32º Mentorship is our Future Hello Brethren I would like to know how many of you are interested in becoming assigned Mentors. What is an assigned Mentor? Well, an assigned Mentor is someone who is paired up with one of our new Scottish Rite Masons, and becomes a touchstone for that new brother. How many of you would want to participate in such a program? The Everett Valley has made it a clear priority to focus on Mentoring and Education. The most effective way to do this is to have our existing brothers in the Valley become involved with our newest members. It is a chance for our newly obligated Scottish Rite Mason to become more familiar with the history, rituals, and traditions of our Valley and the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite as a whole. However, to accomplish this enormous task, we must first have a group of brothers in the Valley who is interested in teaching our newest members. Brothers if you truly believe in what we teach in the degrees of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, then you must also know that ours is a philosophy that must be passed on, from generation to generation. To accomplish this my brothers, requires that each of you must be involved, in some way, so that the opportunity to share your wisdom does not go by unrealized. Let me ask you this, wouldn t you like to share with our newest Scottish Rite Masons, what it was like in our Valley 20 years ago, 30 or 40 years ago, how about 5 years ago? Brethren, if you don t tell us what it was like then, how can we be expected to live up to those standards, if we don t know what they are? How can the traditions and practices of our beautiful institution be passed on, if the people who know what they are don t tell those of us who are still asking to be brought to light? Brothers, I urge all of you to become Mentors in your Valley. I ask this of you brothers, not because becoming involved will take up more of your time, but because without you we young Masons lose out if you don t. We lose the opportunity to listen to what you have to share with us, we lose the opportunity to imagine what Scottish Rite was like, and worst of all brothers, without you, we lose the opportunity to continue our education. If you care about your Valley, if you care about the future of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, if you care about the future of Freemasonry, then I ask you to come back to the Valley. I ask you to please make time Friday nights, to participate in fellowship, to come and meet the men who someday will be responsible for your Valley, come and give of yourself brothers, to those who will benefit the most, our new Scottish Rite Masons. Sincerely, William A. Isabelle 32º, Knight of St Andrews Important date to Remember! July 15, 5:30pm Welcome to the Celebration In the Parking Brothers it s again time to unwind, relax and enjoy a day of fun in the sun with friends and family. Yes, you are cordially invited the annual Scottish Rite Valley of Everett Homecoming Tailgate party. Festivities will start at 5:30pm at the Everett Masonic Center parking lot. We re preparing hamburger, hotdogs chips, ice cream and more. If you have a favorite dish to share bring it and place it on the potluck bar. It would be a good day to just sit down with friends and enjoy the food and the friendship. 3 RiteCare Donor Club Drive By John Geraghty 32º A Donor Club fund drive is going on this summer for the Scottish Rite RiteCare program for the Orient of Washington. The purpose of a Donor Club is to encourage contributors to give generously and have that contribution paid out over time (usually monthly installments) on an annual basis. The funds of the Donor Club are earmarked for the daily operational expenses of the RiteCare clinics and programs in this Orient. As a new member of the Everett Valley, I was excited to volunteer to chair this important campaign. As an added incentive, I will personally be contributing fifty-cents for every dollar that is contributed by the valley (up to a total of $500.00). For those of you who work at companies that match charitable contributions, this means a $50.00 donation would balloon to $ For more than 30 years nationally, and over 20 years in Washington State, Scottish Rite Masons have made a strong commitment to families of children with speech and language disorders. These efforts, combined with donations, grants, and special events make it possible to provide services at no charge to families. We have helped over 2,000 children since Please be on the look out for a letter in the mail explaining the program and how to participate. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at johnegeraghty@hotmail.com. I will also be attending our Family Night TailGate party on July 15th, and will be looking forward to discussing the program in more detail with any of you at that time as well. Thank you brethren, and I look forward to sharing the results of this campaign in an upcoming article, Lodge of Perfection Walt Smith 32º, Senior Warden The Valley of Everett will be going dark for the summer, however, the Valley will be holding the Executive Council meetings. We have some special events going on during our summer break., First off, we ll be having a Family Night-Barbecue and Fun - Family and guests are invited. We will be attending the Aquasox game at the Everett BallPark. This event will include all you can eat hotdogs, hamburger, potato chips and drink with your ticket. Hope to see you at these events. 4 A Bargain for the Scholar or for the simply curious by Steve Osborn, 32, SRRS WHEN you first became a Mason, you were taught Freemasonry consists of a course of moral and philosophical instruction, illustrated by hieroglyphics, and taught, according to an ancient usage, by types, emblems and allegorical figures. As you continued through your degrees, and on into the Scottish Rite, you learned yet more and were exposed to more symbols and allegories. A lot of this, by its very nature, remains unclear and needs more study and information. It is all part of the learning process. Many brothers have followed up on these questions and written on the subjects of their interest. The best of these papers are printed in Heredom, the transactions of the Scottish Rite Research Society (SRRS). The Research Society has also printed many other books on Freemasonry and on the Scottish Rite. You can enjoy a great bargain and have access to this scholarship by simply joining the Scottish Rite Research Society at a nominal cost of $30.00 per year, or a life membership for $ You ll receive the annual edition of Heredom, plus a bonus book each year when you renew and you get a 10% discount on purchases as a member. That also includes clothing, jewelry and other items offered at the online store in addition to books, pamphlets, and articles. Scottish Rite Research Society th Street, NW Washington, D.C Ph: (202) Fax: (202) srrs@srmason-sj.org And the web site is I, have personally purchased many of their offerings at a considerable savings and have found the staff to be cooperative and friendly both on the phone and on the net. A lot of the further light I seek has already been researched by other brethren and published in Heredom. It is one of the first places I look. I recommend it highly. Outstanding Performance Oscar was awarded to Wayne Betts 32 0 for his excellent portrayal of the Venerable Chief in the 26 th Degree. The Venerable Chief is one of the longer parts we have in the Degrees we do. Wayne is able to do the work without script or prompting but is such a manner that the intended messages are well communicated. Hernan Divinagracia 32 0 and Pat Marlatt 32 0 KCCH were recognized for their all around good work in several of the degrees. Both Hernan and Pat have become invaluable for their ability to fill in for a missing cast member with a ten-minute notice. Not only do they fill in but they perform as if they had played the role many times before. Special recognition was given to Allen Lowe 32 0 KCCH for the outstanding work he does with the music and graphic we use on our Degrees as well as at our special events. The work that Allen does is a good part of what makes our Degrees the best in the area. A Masonic Moment Laugh, and the World Laughs with You Weep and.well? The tidal waves had hardly ceased last December from the Tsuami disaster that washed 200,000 residents away from the Sri coast, when a global wave of humanitarian relief surged into the affected area bringing supplies and medical relief. In addition to food and water, blankets and beds, medical supplies and teams of relief workers to the surprise of many a troop of clowns also arrived on the scene. Dr. Hunter (Patch) Adams was part of those relief workers and he brought with him a group of 30 clowns. Dr. Adams gained some notoriety in the 1998 movie Patch that stared Robin Williams as a medical doctor who believed that people, especially the depressed and children can be assisted in rehabilitation and restored to health by the assistance of humor and laughter. Patch and his clowns have traveled many miles from Africa to Cambodia, from the Balkans to Afghanistan in their oversized shoes, floppy ears, and a nose that glows in the dark to bring a ray of hope and happiness to the sick, sorrowful and dying and for a few moments, by laughter, push away the waves of sadness, pain and despair. Relief can help in many ways, by food, shelter, medicine, and clothing and at times even by laughter. Submitted by WB Wally Zink, OSCARS AWARDED AT BANNOCKBURN By Bob Larsen 33º Three Oscars were awarded for outstanding performance and best actor at the annual Bannockburn Banquet. The
5 The Masonic Family and Community Child Identification Program of Washington Dear Friends and Community Leaders, CHIP is a National Child Id Program recognized by Congress, the National Dental Association, and National Law Enforcement Associations, as the premier program today for locating Missing or Exploited Children. The program has been featured on the TV Show Americas Most Wanted and is recommended by the National Association for Missing and Exploited Children. We in Washington have the opportunity to bring this program to our Local Communities with your help. In other words what I am asking for is assistance. We need members of the Dental Profession, who are willing to give of their time, to participate in presenting the DNA Swab, the Dental Impression and Spite Sample, We need Law Enforcement to help with the Fingerprinting portion of the program and local business to help both with the Video Aspect and Financially. Also if anyone has connections to local Educational Facilities that can offer the above assistance their assistance would also be greatly appreciated. Cost of the kits per child is approximately $3.00, which are presented to the Families at no cost. Also the Families are the retainers of all the information so as to eliminate the fear of creating a data bank on the Children. On Sunday July 10th the 5th Avenue Merchants Association has requested that the CHIP¹s Program be presented as part of their Annual Art Fair. They as an organization has made a contribution for the purchase of a portion of the Kits needed. They have also present the program a both to conduct the program. What we need is a commitment from Local Law Enforcement and Dental Professions to help in there respected fields. Also all who help are urged to bring information on their organization that can be given to the families to let them know that they too care about the communities loved ones. Per discussion with Harte in New England (MA) he has presented some scary numbers. The 1st is that over 73% of the Population under age 20 have never been seen by a Dentist therefore there are no Dental records for Identification should National Association of Missing and exploited Children and information they provided indicate that in 2004 there were 2,040 children reported missing of those 38 were found deceased, and one of the stunning aspects is that in Vancouver alone there were reported 95 missing Children. With these numbers I am seeking support and assistance from our Local Dental Associations. At the present time Dr. Wagner and his Staff are on board to help make this program a success. Can any other members of the Dental Associations or Hygienist Association help? Here is a schedule of the up-coming events in Washington State: 1. July 10th the Tacoma 6th Avenue Merchants Art Fair 2. August 2nd in Bothell the National Family Night Out to Fight Crime 3. August 20th and 21 The Bothell Art and Educational Fair 4. August 26th through September 6th the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe 5. September 3rd and 4th the Nile Country Club Invitational BBQ Cook off 6. October 1st and 2nd Salmon Days in Issaquah 7. Tentative location in Olympia (More info to come) If you can help at any of these events please contact me for further information. Also any that do assist, if you have information about your business or organization please bring this information to share with the families. The above is a letter that I will be sending to the media for both publishing and airing over the airwaves as we seek help from the community. Please help by passing this information on to Friends, Dentist, Law Enforcement Officials, Business in the Community, and any others you believe may be interested or can help. Sincerely, WB Vincent DiGiulio

Although there is no higher degree than that of Master Mason, the 29 degrees of the Scottish Rite serve to enrich the philosophy of the Symbolic Lodge.
