1 Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Ill. Wayne I. Smith, 33 Personal Representative of the S.G.I G. (360) Orient of Washington Ill. Charrison Lochaby, 33 Secretary 220 Olympic Blvd Everett, WA (888) Toll Free Volume 21 JUNE 2011 Issue 06 THE RITE BULLETIN By Ill Bro. Wayne Smith, 33 My Masonic Fix As I look through the calendar of the various Valleys in the Orient of Washington I note that though we have 14 Valleys in Washington, Scottish Rite enlightenment and fellowship gets mighty skimpy during the summer. Of those 14 Valleys, 8 are dark in June, 13 are dark in July and 11 are dark in August. The one Valley that never goes dark is Tacoma. Even with no stated communications many of the Valleys have special events for Scottish Rite Masons and our families. Our own Valley is no exception as we have no stated communications planned for June, July and August but we do have two special events, the Tailgate Party on Saturday, 16 July and the Aqua Sox game on Saturday, 27 August. Both of these events are an opportunity for us to regain some of that lost fellowship, and enjoy a BBQ or a ball game. Don t forget to join us for the Scottish Rite Memorial Stone & Plaque Laying Ceremony - Tahoma National Cemetery on Wednesday, 8 June at 1:00 pm. Do not despair though; this is an excellent time to increase our visitations to our own, and our neighboring Blue Lodges, where we can get our Masonic fix. While events like a fair booth are great ways to be more visible in our communities, and I encourage each of you to assist in the planning and operation of them, Scottish Rite Masons come from Blue Lodges. We need to make ourselves visible to the Blue Lodge membership and to extol the virtues of Scottish Rite Masonry. All Master Masons need to know that Scottish Rite is the University of Freemasonry and we offer more light into mysteries and lessons of Masonry along with the special fellowship we enjoy. The Brethren of Everett Valley have made a name for the Valley in that it is the most progressive and friendliest Valley in the Orient. The reputation of Everett Valley is not due to our past and present Personal Representatives or General Secretaries it is all of you who have participated and given so much to Masonry, Scottish Rite Masonry and the Valley of Everett. It is you who are responsible and it is you, and the new Brothers you bring into Scottish Rite, who will continue to make our Valley one of the best, if not the best Valley in the Orient of Washington. When you are visiting a Blue Lodge or one of the usual summer activities such as the Outdoor Fellowcraft Degree at the McMillan Mausoleum in Roche Harbor, Grand Lodge in June at Great Wolf Lodge, or the Outdoor Master Mason Degree in Granite Falls AND if you are not on the Grand Lodge team or a Worshipful Master or other dignitary may I suggest that you wear your Scottish Rite nametag and, if appropriate, a Scottish Rite tie. You may be amazed at the questions and interest it will elicit. Also make sure you have a petition for Everett Valley in your pocket it is downloadable on our website or just ask the Secretary Have a great summer.

2 From The Secretary Ill. Charrison Lochaby, 33 I recently read a very interesting and thought provoking article the Bro. Norm Leeper, Editor, Southern California Research Lodge on some questions our Most Illustrious Ronald Seale and have reprinted for the benefit of all the Brethren of the Valley of Everett. The Most Illustrious Ronald E Seale, 33E, Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction, poses two questions that go to the heart of Freemasonry: "In whom do you place your trust?" Above all else, upon whom or what do you rely? What do you know for sure, are you willing to bet your life on, are you willing to take a beating for? In the final analysis, this question seeks to know upon what the candidate relies as ultimate truth, that upon which his life is grounded. The second question, closely related to the first:"what do you desire?" In the vernacular: What are you doing here? What are you looking for? What do you hope to find. Even though prompted by a faithful brother, the returned answer is always the same wisdom, truth, knowledge, metaphorically identified as Light. And thus having answered, the candidate, now a brother, begins his Masonic journey. For many of us who have spent a lifetime in Masonry, the night we answered those questions so long ago is but a distant memory. For others, a more recent event may be inscribed upon their memories. More importantly, perhaps, is when each of us last answered those same inquiries, so essential to maintaining our character and status of a Mason. If those questions were proposed to you today, how would you answer? How would the average Mason answer these questions? Would the active, involved, enthusiastic Mason answer the same way as the inactive, token Mason? Looked at in a different light, do the answers to both questions depend on the quality of the one s experience in lodge? Good ritual engenders a great candidate experience. One that the candidate will long remember and ultimately through application of Masonic principles give great joy and meaning. That is the intent of ritual to lay a solid foundation to grow the principles of the Craft. But as is often said ritual is not enough. Without further study, direct involvement in the lodge and the feeding of the mystic tie, the new Mason doesn t have much chance to succeed in Masonry on his own. And that is where the Candidate s lodge comes in. Besides ritual, is the lodge helping its members, new and old alike achieve Masonic success? OLD TIME MASONRY By Dewey H. WollStein, PGM, 32, KCCH Many Brothers refer to Masonry of another generation as "Old Time Masonry." The next generation, too, will refer to Masons of our day, using the same expression. It is true that we are living in what seems to be the "efficient age." Yet when we yearn for a type of Masonry that we believe existed in another day, and when we feel some anxiety about Masonry of today, we are looking at scenes rather than events. Scenes change. Customs change. But the character of man does not change. The principles of Freemasonry, founded upon the irrevocable Laws of the Creator, do not change. The Mason placed in any period of history would be the same Mason. The Mason who attends lodge regularly, who comes to know the members of his lodge as brothers and friends, understands "Old Time Masonry" is a living, vital factor in the present, just as it has been through the centuries. A crisis arises. From our lodges throughout the world, Masons, men who know the value of freedom, and the sacrifices necessary to preserve it, come forth and willingly offer their lives in defense of Masonic principles. In spirit they are the same as those Masons of Washington's days. Masonry and the Mason are "Old Time" whether of yesterday or today Reprinted from SCRL, February 2011, Norm Leeper, Editor

3 Purpose and Vision in Masonic Lodges by David A. McCuistion 32 A study of organizational development and leadership reveals several characteristics vital to future organizational sustainability. While it is true that Masonic organizations are an "all volunteer entity", they are essentially no different from any other group of people who strive for excellence and growth. Although organizational ritual contributes to the process, especially so in Freemasonry, ritual is not the sustainable link to success. If it were, Masonic organizations would not have membership issues and concerns, nor would we have unsuccessful Lodges because no organization claims ritualistic practices greater than Masonry. Although a core group of leaders is a major contributing factor, is it not the sole reason for growth and meaning. Even though financial stability is a major aspect of successful expansion, money in and of itself does not insure sustainability. If it were so, we would never have financially solvent Lodges fold due to lack of member involvement. The long-term success of Masonic organizations lies deep within the organizational structure, purpose and leadership within each individual Masonic body: Lodge, Scottish Rite and York Right Bodies and other concordant bodies. Success in the context to which is the text of this writing does not mean mere existence, where membership ebbs and flows between periods of plenty for the several leadership positions and that of searching for officers to keep the Lodge alive. Success to which I am referring is that of few, if any, repeat Masters of the Lodge, that of maintaining a strong financial foundation to meet the several operational needs for sustainability, and that of consistently drawing new petitions for the Degrees of Masonry. Success in this manner refers to Lodges who are learning institutions that continually feeds the intellectual needs and growth of the Brethren who eagerly attend and participate in the "fun" of learning and obtaining Masonic wisdom; success that sustains the brotherly love and friendship that naturally exists and supports the growth of individuals as they pursue their personal quest for "more light in Masonry". In a recent edition of we LEAD Online Magazine, Greg Thomas writes about a question he was asked by a person from the audience to which he was speaking, "Where have all the leaders gone?" Following some amplification and discussion, the questioner stated, "I guess since we don't have leadership in the world anymore the only thing left is to just talk about it." Although Freemasonry in Washington, and even in America in general, may not have noteworthy leadership as history records, there exists strong leadership in several Districts and Lodges in our Jurisdiction. The greater challenge than just talking about Masonic leadership is teaching and learning the many concepts and practices proven to be effective in major organizations in the country. The purpose of this paper is to condense a salient leadership characteristic and practice that can be used by Lodge Leadership in sustaining the viability of their organization in their communities. While every point put forth may not apply to every Lodge in the State, some can be used immediately to begin a process of sustainable organizational leadership within their individual Masonic Lodge. Organizational Leadership is Masonic Lodges There are two additional vitally important aspects associated with organizational leadership for sustaining long-term organizational success: purpose and vision. While it should be apparent, the purpose of Freemasonry was established eons ago. We continually talk about and refer to two important topics within our Blue Lodge Rituals: 1. The Great Light of Masonry; and 2. The seven liberal arts and sciences. Regarding number 1, which is placed in the center of our Lodges and around which we circumambulate, the Great Light of Masonry needs to be foundational in the formation of our individual lodges purposes and a standard part of our "learning organization" concept. Regarding number 2, which we teach in the Fellow craft Degree, Logic to seek the truth and Geometry to learn the wonderful properties of Nature and truth of morality need to be remembered as Masonic principles and organizational purpose. Although there has been an evolution connected with these original purposes, it is not the intent of this writing to further propound what should be the purpose of an our Lodges. What is important is that a purpose be established within the institution as a whole, and then further refined at all levels within that organization. Using the standard answer stated at the beginning of this paper, "more light in Masonry" of which we are all familiar, each body within the institution of Freemasonry needs to establish what is the intended purpose of that body. The question then becomes, how does one determine that purpose? Statement of Purpose. The leader must begin the process of defining that purpose for their organization. The servant-leader will then engage every member of the organization with the discussion, listen intently, discuss fully every ideal put forth, rule out those that do not apply or fit the organization and eventually come to an agreement on the final product. That Statement of Purpose is then put to writing, visualized by everyone, bought-into by everyone, and continually kept visible so that the purpose remains the impetus for further guidance (ruling) and instruction (teaching); following the guidance put forth in the Charge to the Lodge annually at the Installation of Officers. What is most important at this point is the concept of living in a Republic as we do. When the majority of the body agrees upon an intended idea or ideal, the entire body puts forth their efforts, 110% if you will, to carry out the organizations established purpose; there should be no underlying conspiracies to under-mind or ruin the efforts in following the purpose of the organization. If a times comes about that the established purpose no longer fits the organization, the process of defining a new purpose must take place. The servant-leader in everyone will serve the organization to the fullest in that process. Vision Statement Regardless of whose writings one reads about organizational leadership, the idea of creating a vision is mentioned as a primary ingredient contributing to the success of an organiza- (Continued on page 4)

4 (Continued from page 3) tion. Fortunately for Masonic Lodges in Washington that process is relatively easy because our Grand Lodge has already created a Vision Statement from which any Lodge can create its own vision statement. Many have heard, several have read, but few can recite explicitly that vision statement. From we see the vision of Washington Freemasonry: Freemasons of Washington will be recognized as a relevant and respected Fraternity, committed to attracting and retaining all men of high quality who strive for self improvement and the opportunity to make a positive difference in their community. Any Lodge in our Jurisdiction can now take that vision statement and easily create a vision from their Lodge in their community. For instance, using my own Lodge as an example: Garfield Masonic Lodge No 41 will be recognized in the community of La Conner as a respected organization, committed to attracting men of high quality in the La Conner vicinity who strive for self-improvement with the desire to make a difference in the town of La Conner and surrounding areas. Another example is William H. Jett Lodge No. 285 in Wenatchee, whose Vision Statement reads: Jett Lodge will be an active part of our community while advancing the cause of Freemasonry by transcending all religious, ethnic, cultural, social and educational differences, through the Masonic teachings of Brotherly Love, Friendship and Relief. Lodge leadership should facilitate a session with lodge membership, seeking their input for ideas, create a lodge vision statement, place it in writing, give everyone a copy, post it in several conspicuous places around the lodge building, place it on the monthly Trestleboard, and make it part of your Lodge website. Once the Lodge has put forth a Statement of Purpose and a Vision Statement, which become the foundational ideals upon which every future action is based, Lodge Leadership can now start each year with a new Worshipful Master setting its individual goals for the coming year. Notice I said, "Lodge Leadership" and not the Worshipful Master. Setting organizational goals is a collaborative and team process, involving every member of the Lodge. The Worshipful Master firsts asks for input from members of the Lodge; this can be completed during a Stated Communication, through the monthly Trestleboard asking for input, or from a called meeting over coffee separate from Lodge business. Lodge Leadership -- Master and Wardens -- can then collaborate on the most suggested or most important three to five goals. These are then put to paper and copies disseminated to the membership. These goals become the primary focus of the Lodge in the coming year, even taking precedence over the routine monthly traditions of the Lodge. The focus of these primary Lodge Goals include such things as Bikes-4- Books, parades, fund-raising events, scholarships, and other community related activities and events. If it becomes necessary through the year to re-focus and re-define goals, then that must take place. This re-defining process is accomplished in similar fashion as described above. Goal Setting Goals setting is sometimes a tedious process, sometimes frustrating, and requires patience by Lodge Leadership. Another suggested format for goals, which has been written about, is time-tested with documented success, is that goals follow the SMART Goal format. SMART Goals are defines as such: S Specifically written, clear and concise; M Measurable by time, something that can show progress and accomplishments; A Attainable by the organization, somewhat challenging, but not unreachable; R Realistic for the Lodge and community in which they are completed; and T Time restricted. SMART Goals cannot be of an infinite period. Writing goals using this format and structure have proven to be successful. Once a Lodge has established their purpose, vision and individual goals, each year the new Worshipful Master can, with the assistance of the Lodge Officers and members, direct the course of the Lodge for the coming year. Establish Lodge training with the purpose and vision of seeking truth and knowledge that serves the intellectual progress of Lodge Brothers. Set a course for community involvement that is purposeful and involves everyone in the Lodge. Plan fraternal events for the fellowship and enjoyment of the Lodge on a night other than that of the Stated Communication. The Worshipful Master needs to use the creativity of everyone in determining what course of action will be taken, what activities to plan and involve the family unit. The Great Light of Masonry reminds us to "ask and we shall receive" -- you might be surprised at the rewarding fun that the Lodge will realize in this manner. The Worshipful Masters year is not about him, it is about what manner in which he will lead the Brethren in lodge activities. What it is about is the legacy left by the Worshipful Master after he returns to the sidelines. -The above article is an excerpt from Sustainable Organizational Leadership in Freemasonry by VW David A. 5 Masonic Outreach Services A Program of the Grand Lodge of Washington By Mary Craves Hollands, Director of Outreach Services It has been a year since the last Grand Lodge Annual Communications Meeting took place where Masonic Outreach Services legislation was passed to make Outreach Services part of the Masonic Code. It is a good time to go back and see what we have accomplished over the past year. First of all, we had to get the word out about Masonic Outreach Services. If you have attended one of the eight Regional Communications Meetings you may have attended the presentation that was offered on Masonic Outreach Services. This was an opportunity for members to come and hear what the program is all about and what type of things are planned for the future. It gave us an opportunity to speak with many of you and confirm the direction you wish to see the program take. In addition, we have been invited to twenty-four lodges to give a presentation about the program and discuss the opportunities there are for volunteers in delivering services to our most vulnerable brothers and sisters. All of these presentations were an attempt to get the word out to the fraternity about the program. If you have not had us out to your lodge, please think about inviting us to come and speak to your membership. Besides marketing the program, our staff here has been offering Information and Referral to callers and walk-ins in a variety of areas. Sometimes these are financial requests and others are for guidance when our callers and visitors find themselves in difficult situations. We are here for all of you all you need to do is call us. As part of Information and Referral Program, we have been successful in assisting many Masonic families with filling out the paperwork needed to file applications for financial programs administered by both the State and Federal governments. Finally, we offer Case Management, not only to the former residents but all of the new clients that have called us and requested assistance in the past year. Finally, we have been developing programs that will hopefully meet the ongoing needs of the fraternity as they age. These include, in addition to Information and Referral and Case Management, a Telephone Reassurance Program, a Transportation Program, an Adult Respite Program and a Transitional Care Program. Individual lodges have come forward and volunteered to pilot some of these programs which has been a heartwarming experience and makes us feel that the fraternity is truly behind us in our efforts. What has become increasingly apparent is the fact that people want to age in place, close to their family, friends, church and lodge. We want to take the years of experience caring for our elder brothers and sisters here on the campus and use that to support people where they want to age in their own homes or in retirement communities in their home towns. Please feel free to call us with any questions, comments or suggestions at: / Ext. 101; or visit our website at: masonicoutreachservices.org.
