PASTOR KEARNEY SAYS By the time you read this, I will have moved on and already said my face-to-face good-byes to you at worship and coffee fellowship on May 26. But let me say for emphasis what a delight it has been for me to be your interim pastor these eight months. For me, the time was short, the shortest interim I have served. But you were ready and in a good place to call a new pastor. One pretty good sign of an effective interim process is calling the right pastor. And I think you have done that in the call of Pastor Mary Shore. So, I leave believing that the Holy Spirit has been at work among you these months and that you have listened to the call of the Spirit. Moreover, I m confident that you will continue to listen and act on behalf of the good news of Jesus Christ. My service among you concludes the end of May. (I will likely begin a new interim in the middle of the state in a month.) As I write, it is expected that Pastor Mary will arrive in early July. In the meantime, your wonderful clergy members, Paul Cooper, Bill Johnson, and Ed Barrett, will lead worship. If you have an urgent need for a pastor, call the church office. Leigh Ann Stinson will put you in touch with Bill Johnson or another pastor who will be on call for the purpose. LCGS members have been unfailingly generous and gracious in their support for me and my ministry among you. I am very grateful. God bless you! Doug Kearney

2 PASTOR MARY SHORE Pastor Mary Shore was approved to be LCGS' new pastor by a vote of 85 (yes) to 3 (no) at the congregational meeting on May 22nd. She is eager to begin her ministry at LCGS. She will be attending the NC Synod Assemblies on May 31st and June 1st, along with Ed Hennig and Caroline Smith, to meet with other church leaders. Pastor Mary will also visit us at LCGS on Sunday, June 2nd. She and her husband, Hank, will be moving to Brevard around the third week of June. We will update you as more information becomes available. Thank you, everyone, for your support and cooperation during this period of transition. BEFORE PASTOR MARY ARRIVES LCGS resident pastors will continue to help meet the needs of our congregation until Pastor Mary begins her ministry here. Bill Johnson will lead worship services on June 2nd and 9th, Paul Cooper will lead worship on June 16th, Ed Barrett will serve as pastor on June 23rd, and Paul Cooper and Shelley Webb will lead worship on June 30th. In the case of an urgent matter, please call the church office during business hours ( ), or call Leigh Ann Stinson ( ) if it is after hours or on a weekend.

3 JUNE WEDNESDAY PROGRAMS: June 5th THE JESUS DYNASTY Join Bill Johnson as he concludes the discussion of Dr. Tabor s book, The Jesus Dynasty. The focus of the presentation will be Waiting for the Son of Man. Copies of the book are available in paperback and Kindle format through Amazon. The forum begins at 6:00 p.m., following the 5:00 p.m. Covered Dish Dinner. Please sign up on the bulletin board if you want to attend the dinner, along with what dish you plan to bring. June 19th Transylvania-C.A.R.E. Kathleen Mallet, Project Coordinator, will speak about Transylvania-C.A.R.E., a community coalition focused on decreasing deaths due to prescription medication overdose. General medication safety will also be discussed. Find out what you can do to make our community safer. The forum begins at 6:00 p.m., following the 5:00 p.m. Cost Dinner. The menu for the Cost Dinner is: grilled hamburgers with all the fixings, corn on the cob and dessert. Please sign up if you plan to attend the Cost Dinner.

4 Sunday, June 23rd at Atagahi Park After the 10:00 a.m. worship service, join us in Connestee Falls for an afternoon of fellowship and fun. The church will provide coffee, lemonade, ice, cups and a large cooler. Bring your own food and other drinks, as well as enough to share with others. Tables will be available. Please bring your own utensils. There is a shallow lake area and beach at the park. Horseshoes, croquet and big wheels will be available. Please bring games to play with others during the picnic. To get to Atagahi Park: take Main Street to Highway 276 from church (6.0 miles). Go past Connestee Falls main gate (1.3 miles). Turn right up East Fork Road to Connestee East Fork Gate (.3 miles). Get ID tag from guard at gate. Stay on yellow line over Lake Atagahi Bridge. Follow Lake from white church to park (.3 miles). If transportation to the picnic is an issue, contact Gene Shonka.

5 Brevard Little Theater is performing Red Velvet Cupcake War A Southern Comedy. On Friday, June 14th, the Senior Adult Youth Group will be attending the show. We will meet at Big Mike s at 5:00 p.m. for dinner. The show begins at 7:30 p.m.. Tickets are $14. Contact the church office or Leigh Ann before June 9th, if you would like to join in the fun. OUR RESIDENT PASTORS Help us say thank you to our resident pastors, Ed Barrett, Paul Cooper and Bill Johnson, who have so graciously helped LCGS during the interim time. Please join us for a special Coffee Hour after the 10:00 a.m. worship service on June 9th to show them how much we appreciate them and all the work they have done on behalf of LCGS. BOOKS IN PASTOR S OFFICE Please help yourselves to the books in the Pastor s office. As you may know, the shelves are quite full, and we need to make room for Pastor Mary s books. Enjoy!

6 READ-A-THON FOR THE CRECHE This summer, WAGS Kids at LCGS are reading books to raise money for The Good Shepherd Creche in India, which serves children ages five and younger and their families. The read-a-thon will run from June 1st to September 1st. Please help support our youth in their efforts to help raise funds for The Creche. There are extra read-a-thon forms on the table in The Commons. If you know of a youth who is not involved in WAGS and who would like to help out with this fundraiser and/or could use some extra encouragement to read during the summer, please give them a form! Thank you! In Case You Didn t Know... For 2013, taxpayers who are required to take annual distributions from their IRA, may contribute these withdrawals directly to charitable organizations such as LCGS and treat them as tax free distributions. It s a convenient way to satisfy IRA distribution requirements, support charitable causes, and receive a tax break all at the same time. If you are interested, please check with your tax preparer.

7 During the summer, Wednesday night choir practice will only be held on June 5th and July 3rd at 7:00 p.m. All other choir rehearsals will be held on Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m. All are welcome to sing with the choir. COUNCIL NOTES for MAY A new church website is in the planning stages, and should be up and running around August 1. Team members Leigh Ann Stinson, Brighton McConnell, Bill Johnson, Tom Reinke, Kimberly Dunbar and Dwight Meyer are working on the project and expect some exciting changes. The recent annual Steve Smith Barbeque netted $2700 for the youth mission fund. Nearly 300 dinners were sold, in addition to bulk orders of the barbeque. The World and Community Committee has a new chair, Kimberly Dunbar, replacing Sue Barrett. A youth-sponsored fundraiser for the Creche was approved by Council. It is a reading program for children, who will solicit donations from family and friends for the books they read. A By-laws change has been approved by Council, restricting staff members, except for the pastor, from serving on the Council. This matter will come before the congregation for a final vote in November. The Treasurer, Ed Hennig, reported that income has been under budget for the past three months.
