1 November 2015 Lake-Sumter Gazette Page 1 LAKE-SUMTER CHAPTER OF THE The Lake-Sumter Gazette Editor: Bob Beightol President s Message By Jerry Hardwich, 1st Vice President. As I prepare to write this note for the November newsletter, my mind drifts away thinking about our patriot ancestors. What were the events surrounding their daily lives? For those in the New England area, the crops were harvested in late September and early October, and brought into the sheds or barns for the bleak winter months. For those in the southern climes, the harvest of plenty was about to begin and would conclude in the next few months. As many were tending to their daily chores, there was protest, conflict, and the development of the theory of our foundation was taking place in the country. On October 7, 1765, the Stamp Act Congress convened in New York City with representatives from nine colonies meeting to protest the British Stamp Act which imposed the first direct tax by the British Crown upon the American Colonies. The Congress was the first gathering of elected representatives from several of the American Colonies to devise a unified protest against new British taxation which required the use of specially stamped paper for all business in the Colonies. Widespread protests were to ensue, some which were violent. The protest was that the English Parliament did not have the right to impose the tax because the decision did not include any representation from the colonies. We continue to celebrate our heritage. We have accomplished much this last month, with much more to come in the future months. Our first meeting, October 3, saw the introduction of a number of new officers:

2 November 2015 Lake-Sumter Gazette Page 2 - Allan Lane now in charge of Photography. - Basil Linville our new Quartermaster and Sergeant at Arms. - Bob Barnes who has moved up to Vice Commander of the Color Guard. - Bob Beightol in charge of our Newsletter. David Bussone and Scott Bushnell reported on The Case for a SAR Chapter in The Villages, an effort to give birth to a new chapter in the area. As you do your end of year tax planning, remember the Matching Donation Challenge. The October meeting attendance was 34 members and 21 guests. A large new member class has increased our membership to over After a vigorous recruiting effort over the summer hiatus, the chapter received approval of membership for 22 new Compatriots. - At the October 3 meeting, 19 new Compatriots were inducted. A new Poster Contest has been developed by the head of our Ladies Auxiliary, Myra Bushnell (DAR), and Bob Barnes. The contest will be working to secure participation of several local schools. Several awards, including three military service medals for John Albee, Theodore Stratton, and Basil Linville. In closing, please give thought to what our Patriot ancestors were challenged with, protesting the implementation of taxes without any representation from the colonies. God bless our patriot relatives for what they did to persevere and save our country. All the best to each and every member. Good health, prosperity, and happiness. Jerry Hardwich First Vice President Lake-Sumter Chapter Sons of the American Revolution

A celebration of Dixon's life was held at Brewer and Sons Funeral Home, Kurfiss Clermont Chapel, on Friday, October 9, Interment followed at Florida National Cemetery. Editor s Note: Following is the from Dixon s daughter, Stephanie, written at 7:33 p.m., September 4, 2015, notifying the Chapter of his passing. It needs to be read by all of his Compatriots. All, You were a part of a special group you were one of the folks with whom my dad shared his sometimes quirky, sometimes inflammatory, sometimes cryptic but almost always entertaining thoughts on the world. I thought of blind-copying you all, but heck, dad certainly never did that so as I write on his behalf this evening, I won t either. Today, my father passed away. He went out of this world not ready for life to be over, but preserving his treasured independence. Last Sunday, dad drove himself to the ER because he was having a lot of difficulty breathing. They admitted him and until today he seemed to be holding his own, even as the twilight of his life was clearly upon him. He resisted the offers that he would need to use oxygen because his levels were quite low or that maybe someone could come check on him every now and again to get him groceries and clean up a bit. But toward the end of the week he said he would use the oxygen and he told his friend he wouldn t go to the clubs where they smoked anymore. He presented a plan for compliance, but he probably had his fingers crossed for the fib he knew it was! This morning his condition worsened quickly as sepsis set in and despite an iron will, his body couldn t keep up with the converging assaults. This afternoon, his breathing was labored and his heart, too tired of the extra duty, failed to match Dad s will. I was not ready for my Dad to pass, but there is some comfort that he did not have to depend upon my brother

5 November 2015 Lake-Sumter Gazette Page 5 and sister and I for assistance; not because we would not gladly have given it, but because that was what my Dad really wanted to live life on his terms. My father was proud to be in the Sons of the American Revolution and his wish was to be interred at the Veteran s Cemetery. Many of you will want to say goodbye and so we will celebrate my father s life with a Memorial Service at Brewer and Sons Funeral Home. The details are forthcoming. So Long from Dix! Sincerely, Stephanie his oldest and probably his favorite! They will be missed!
