Edition CXLIII Message From Piedmont Chapter President Ron Redner Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness The ideals of those patriots who achieved the independence of the American people; the patriots who opposed tyranny to give us our freedom from oppression. This freedom is so great, so worthy, that hundreds of thousands have followed their lead by placing themselves in harm s way in order to preserve it. We dare not take this freedom for granted. As Sons of the American Revolution it is our goal to preserve the memory and the record of our country s Revolutionary Patriots. Through this we offer historical and educational programs designed to promote true patriotism! The parade honors our country s war veterans and recognizes their service to our country. The Piedmont Chapter sponsored a float representing the Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution. Piedmont Chapter President Ron Redner, piloted the float while Piedmont members, George Thurmond, Bob McCleskey, and Rick Reese manned the float and passed out candy to the children lining the parade route. The Georgia SAR Color Guard members Dan McMichael, and his grandson playing the drum, Allen Greenly, Scott Collins, Shep Hammock, presented the colors and led the parade. In addition to the Piedmont Chapter, the Martha Stewart Bulloch Chapter of the DAR and the CAR also participated and marched in the Parade. It was a great day and great fun for all involved.
Page 2 Message From Piedmont Chapter President Ron Redner What Are We? The SAR is an historical, educational, and patriotic non-profit corporation that seeks to maintain and extend: The institutions of American freedom An appreciation for true patriotism A respect for our national symbols The value of American citizenship The unifying force of E Pluribus Unum that has created, from the people of many nations, one nation and one people. We do this by perpetuating the stories of patriotism, courage, sacrifice, tragedy, and triumph of the men who achieved the independence of the American people. What About You? It is quite possible you have family members who are eligible for SAR membership. In fact, as a current member of the SAR, you already know the name of your patriot ancestor(s). Why not help a family member to become involved? The Award Winning Piedmont Chapter of the SAR has many volunteer workers to guide prospective new members in the development of a lineage to their Revolutionary Patriot. I am requesting that each member of the Piedmont Chapter present at least one new member. For more information please contact Jaime Ruff our chapter registrar for more information. The time for action is now. I truly appreciate all that you do for our community and chapter. It is an honor to be associated with such noble men of the SAR. Thank you for your good work! Piedmont Chapter Meeting Highligh ts The regular chapter meeting was held at Houck s Grille, located at Crabapple Rd, Ste. B130, Roswell, Georgia on Saturday July, 21, After the social hour and breakfast the meeting was called to order by President Ron Redner. Invocation was given by Chaplin Bill Kabel. The colors was presented by the Chapter Color Guard, led by commander Paul Prescott. Vice President Roy Greene introduced our guest speaker Terry Manning. Terry gave a very interesting and entertaining presentation titled Ten Things you did not Know About George Washington Among those were his postal franking privileges that Congress afforded him. He also had an ongoing feud with Thomas Jefferson over his (Washington) stance of neutrality towards France. Compatriot Manning also discussed Washington s famous Farwell Address that was published, but never delivered. The group was interesting to learn that Washington sought input from James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay. Terry also shared a fun fact that George Washington slept in over 200 home during the Revolutionary war. If you ever see a sign that says Washington Slept Here he probably did. Vice President Roy Greene presented Compatriot Manning with a Certificate of Appreciation.

Page 5 Piedmont Chapter Member wins the Thomas J. Bond, Jr. Award Congratulations to Compatriot Jamie Ruff on receiving the Thomas J. Bond, Jr. Award. This award is given to the Compatriot whose photographic entry is selected as most representative of the spirit of patriotism. This photo (on left) was taken during the pregame ceremony at the Atlanta Braves game on Independence Day, The Georgia Society SAR color guard was asked to participate, and they asked me to attend and photograph them. Thirteen militia men to represent the original colonies lined up to fire their muskets at the end of the Star Spangled Banner. I was positioned by the dugout and told two boys I was seated near to keep an eye on the militia men as they had a big surprise coming up. As the song ended, on the word Brave, they fired their weapons and the crowd absolutely roared. It was a very moving and inspiring modon Burdick, President of the GSSAR ment. I told the boys that's my dad! - Jamie Ruff presenting he Thomas J. Bond, Jr. Award to Jamie Ruff At the time we didn't know he was sick but after that day my dad got worse quickly and we lost him to cancer six weeks later. I didn't tell the national society all of this when I entered the photo in the annual contest because I hoped it would stand on its own for its patriotism. The photo is bittersweet to me now but it was a great day and I know Dad would have been proud. - Jamie Ruff Eagle Scout Recognition Rick Reese presents the Certificate of Recognition from the Piedmont Chapter to Eagle Scout Akaash VenKata Para of Troop 3143 at his court of Honor on August 5th, 2018 at the Johns Creek United Methodist Church.
Page 6 Traveling Trunk - Interactive education program Rick Reese, Jr, education chairman for the GASSAR, and past president of the Piedmont Chapter, has been burning up the road this month presenting our Traveling Trunk Program. Compatriot Reese made stops to nine elementary schools in the month of September. The Traveling Trunk program is an interactive educational program demonstrating what life was like during the Revolutionary Period with little known facts, stories, and replica artifacts. The students have the opportunity to touch the items and imagine what life was like in a up close and tactile way. The program is very popular with the students and teachers alike, especially the Colonial Uniform worn by Compatriot Reese as he presents the program. The program is very rewarding and a great away to keep history alive and fun to learn, it also is great exposure for the Sons of the American Revolution, and the Piedmont Chapter. If you would like to get involved, either as a presenter or have school that you feel may benefit from the program please contact Rick Reese, JR (rickreese68@att.net). Schools visited in September: Burnette Elementary School - Suwanee, GA Gwin Oaks Elementary School - Lawrenceville, GA Lawrenceville Elementary School - Lawrenceville, GA Meadow Creek Elementary School - Norcross, GA Norton Elementary School - Snellville, GA Partee Elementary School - Snellville, GA Shiloh Elementary School - Snellville, GA Alford Elementary School - Lawrenceville, GA Sugar Hill Elementary School - Sugar Hill, GA All artifacts are kept in the Traveling Trunk pictured to the right.
Page 7 Grave Markings - Canton, Georgia Saturday, September 22, 2018, grave markings for Piedmont Chapter member Billy Gene Holcombe, and father of Piedmont Chapter member Jamie Ruff, Mike Ruff, who was a member of the Button Gwinnette Chapter. Both ceremonies were held at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. The GSSAR Color Guard, commanded by Bill Palmer, were on hand for both ceremonies. During Mike Ruff s ceremony, his son, Jamie gave a very touching biography, Mike s wife Bee Ruff was presented the American Flag by our State President Don Burdick. Later in the afternoon during Billy Gene Holcombe s ceremony, his wife Barbara Holcombe spoke beautifully about Billy, and she was presented the American Flag by Piedmont Chapter President Ron Redner. Sons of the American Revolution Chapters from all over the region were in attendance to present wreaths at both ceremonies, both of our past compatriots were respectfully honored and both men would have been proud of the organization that they both loved.
