28 GRAND MASTER S CONCLUDING REMARKS Brethren ALL There comes a time when each of us has to step aside. We take office voluntarily and so we vacate it. This was the last year of a long period of time during which many paths have been explored, roads traveled and indeed, destinations reached. Who are we that we may choose every event that would change our lives? There are many we would have sidestepped if given a choice, many we would rather not have knowledge of as well. In truth, each of those unwanted events in life have contributed to our growth as human beings, each, however, has had a part in developing our character; turning a negative into a positive, a lemon into lemonade, a Rough Ashlar into one fit for use in the Temple! Each stage of our lives has several others within; each has lessons to teach; each has its own rewards and penalties. None of us has the ability to look into the future with certainty, nor may we know every course of action in advance. It is the "School of Life" teaching us, one lesson at a time. We as Freemasons have an unusual opportunity to prevail, why? Many of those paths and roads have already been traveled by other Brothers, they know the way, the results of dedicated service, the personal joys of fulfillment. These Brethren are your Mentors, available to you for the asking, a simple knock on the door, a desire to learn and take instruction is all it takes. This past year, old back and hip injuries reared their powerful influence over my ability to travel. To say it was difficult to travel would be an understatement of Gross Proportions. I did attend each Councils works and almost all of our functions in New Hampshire plus a very few out of it. I did send regrets to all concerned Jurisdictions and events. My concentration remained here, working to the best of my "Mobility". The record is printed in the final report. During those opportunities I was able to present an Ish Sodi Award to seven deserving Companions for their past, present and continuing superior performance and attitude. Their labors have contributed to the overall successful Masonic Year of our Grand Council. We have been able to replace every loss with a new face. The new faces are younger and more active, eager and participating in their Councils future. You, my Companions, did the work, pulled the cord and yanked the Whistle Chain! Congratulations to EVERY COUNCIL!!! I must also give a huge amount of Thanks to your Grand Line Officers, they put it together, adjusted where necessary and proceeded to complete all tasks assigned. There were several individual Companions, submitted by their Council, to be considered for the honor of being nominated Cryptic Mason of the Year, to the General Grand Council, International. It truly was a hard choice as there is so many of you out there I am aware of. Of the names submitted to me, however, one stood out clearly; Ill. Companion Andy Lord. In addition to this, the General Grand Council authorized a NEW Award with similar requirements as the Grand Encampments Knight Commander of the Temple, the Order of the Secret Vault. For all of his works in our Councils and Grand Council I nominated our R.I. Grand Recorder Dennis A. Sheridan, MIPGM as the first recipient. As you are now aware, each of my Nominations were approved by the General Grand Council International. I will be almost out of Masonic Offices after the elections today. With 98% of the work compete, my future efforts will begin to be concentrated upon reestablishing my life with my new wife Alice. Many of you are aware that my wife of 47 + years, Catherine, has now been deceased for 3 + years. If I did not have this Great Fraternity to influence my life and activities, I would not be here now. My adult life has been so blessed with this association, I could never 28
29 begin to repay it, except with my efforts in its behalf. It was Catherine who bore the brunt of this passage, to her I say, thank you dear wife, may you Rest in Peace. To my new Bride Alice, you know not what you missed, our future will be greatly relieved of countless nights away from home. There are still about two years left before I am completely out of office though. You, very ably managed as a nurse, wife and mother for 47 + years, I am sure you can handle our future together, handily! And so it is time to say farewell, may you each adorn your "Temple not made with hands" with the jewels of Faith, Love, Honor and Constancy. Sincerely and fraternally, Companion Robert D. Steel, MIGM Grand Council of Cryptic Masons in NH 29
30 REPORT OF THE JURISPRUDENCE COMMITTEE 2013 To Companion Robert D. Steel, Most Illustrious Grand Master, and the Companions of the Grand Council of Cryptic Masons of New Hampshire: The Jurisprudence Committee has reviewed the report of the Most Illustrious Grand Master s activities for the Cryptic year and thanks him for its timely submission, even if received indirectly. This Committee always appreciates the opportunity to evaluate the Most Illustrious Grand Master s activities when adequate time is available for review. The Committee notes his attendance at the Northeast Conference in New York and recognizes his limitations for travels to other jurisdictions. It is suggested that when such circumstances arise, effort should be made to the extent possible to ensure a qualified representative of this Grand Council is present at out-of-state events. Participation in visitations to other Grand Jurisdictions and General Grand Council activities is important not only for the presiding Most Illustrious Grand Master, but for all progressive Line Officers. The Committee also recognizes his diligence in visiting the Councils in this jurisdiction, both officially and to support them with degree work. We were pleased to see the number of presentations of the Ish Sodi award personally presented by the Most Illustrious Grand Master. It is critical that the Grand Council is seen as both a resource of support by all Companions, and as a means of officially recognizing the efforts of individuals. Your attendance provided a visual confirmation of that support. The report received by the Committee contained no reference to either dispensations granted or by-laws changes approved. The Committee must assume that no items of an administrative nature occurred during the past Cryptic year, but would remind those advancing towards the Grand East that administrative actions or decisions are a critical part of the annual report of the Illustrious Grand Master. Should there be none during a term of office, it is suggested that a comment to that effect should be included in the report. Most Illustrious Sir, it has been a pleasure working with you during the past Cryptic year, and we thank you for the privilege of serving this Grand Council as your Jurisprudence Committee. Sincerely and Fraternally, Roger A. Douillette, Sr., MIPGM Robert L. Sutherland, Jr., MIPGM Richard F. Cole, Jr., MIPGM, Chairman 30
