3 Directions for this lapbook. You will need two folders or one folder and one piece of card stock. First take the first folder and open it up and lay it flat like this: Next fold the two sides into the iddle so it looks like this when opened. The dotted likes are the creases where you folded: Now take your other folder and cut it in half. Keep the part with the tab and cut off the tab. Discard other half of folder. Now you will tape the piece of the folder you just cut and tape it to the folder that you just folded so it looks like this: If you are using a piece of card stock you can tape it here in place of the piece of folder. Tape on both sides of the crease for Durability. Tape Tape Tape
4 Now fold down the piece of folder you just taped down into your lapbook and close flaps. It should now look like this: Now you are ready to put the pictures on the outside of your lapbook. Cut out the United States Governent Buildings, States and Meorials in two strips and glue one onto each flap of the outside of the folder you have just created like this: Now open the flaps of the folder. You will see the piece of folder or card stock that you taped in. This is where the picture of Mt. Rushore will be cut out, colored and glued. So go ahead and cut out the picture of Mt. Rushore, color and glue it into your lapbook like this: Tape tape tape tape
5 Now you are ready to start placing booklets into your folder base that you have ade. So go ahead and open the flap that you glued the picture of Mt. Rushore onto so it looks like this again: The picture of the Mt. Rushore will be glued on the back of this. Above booklet placeent can be followed but you are always free to glue the booklets into the folder as you wish. Once all booklets have been coted and glued into your folder your lapbook is now cote!

9 The Korean War Veterans Meorial Located on the National Mall (near the Lincoln Meorial) in Washington, DC, the Korean War Veterans Meorial is a reinder of the Korean War ( ) and the sacrifices and hardships of those who fought and returned, as well as those who fought and paid the ultiate price. This eorial ensures those veterans that they will not be forgotten. The Korean War was fought between June of 1950 and July of Also known as the Korean Conflict, the Forgotten War and the Fatherland Liberation War, the Korean War officially began after North Korea invaded South Korea by crossing the boundaries of the two regions known as the 38th parallel. Beginning as a civil conflict between two provisional governents copeting for control, the Korean War quickly escalated into a ulti-national conflict. It ended with a ceasefire between the two warring factions, North and South Korea, but without the security of a forally established peace treaty. The North Koreans found backing fro Russia and China while sypathies for the South lay with the United Nations and the United States. The Korean War Veterans Meorial consists of a platoon of stainless steel soldiers in the "Field of Service". All four branches of the ilitary (ary, navy, Marine Corps, and air force) are depicted by the statues. To the left of the soldiers extends a black granite wall. Over two thousand photographs sandblasted into the wall honor the supporting services who provided supply, edical, spiritual, and fire support to the front line units. The United Nations Wall on the opposite side lists the countries that
10 provided troops, edical support, or supplies to help South Korea. These were: Australia, Belgiu, Canada, Colubia, Denark, Ethiopia, France, Greece, India, Italy, Luxebourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Republic of Korea, South Africa, Sweden, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdo, and the United States of Aerica. All these eleents point toward the Pool of Reebrance. Engraved on a nearby wall are the total casualties of both the United States and the United Nations' forces along with the words "FREEDOM IS NOT FREE". 12 The Lincoln Meorial Located on the National Mall in Washington, DC, the Lincoln Meorial honors Abraha Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. Lincoln was President during the Civil War ( ). The eorial, which was built between 1914 and 1922, sybolizes his belief that all peo should be free. The thee of the building represents the Union. (The Union (the north) was priarily anti slavery and the south (Confederacy) was strongly pro slavery. The coluns surrounding the walls stand for the 36 states in the Union at the tie of Lincoln s death. The naes of the 48 states in the Union (when the eorial was coted in 1922) are carved on the walls along the outside of the eorial. A plaque honoring Alaska and Hawaii is in the approach plaza. The chaber inside the eorial contains a statue of Lincoln seated, facing the Washington Monuent and the Capitol. The statue of Lincoln is 19 feet high and weighs 175 tons. Behind Abraha Lincoln, engraved on the wall it says: IN THIS TEMPLE AS IN THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE FOR WHOM HE SAVED THE UNION THE MEMORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN IS ENSHRINED FOREVER The chaber also houses two huge stone tables, one engraved with Lincoln s Second Inaugural Address, and the other with the Gettysburg Address. Two urals represent the princis of freedo, justice, unity, brotherhood, and charity. Fro 1959 to 2008, the Lincoln Meorial was shown on the reverse of the United States one
13 cent coin, which bears Lincoln's portrait bust on the front. This was done to ark the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. The eorial also appears on the back of the U.S. Five dollar bill, the front of which bears Lincoln's portrait. Where is the Lincoln Meorial located? Who does it honor? What does it sybolize? 15 The Marine Corps War Meorial The Marine Corps War Meorial (also called the Iwo Jia Meorial) is a ilitary eorial statue outside the walls of Arlington National Ceetery in Virginia. The design of the assive sculpture by Felix de Weldon was based on the photo Raising the Flag on Iwo Jia, taken during the Battle of Iwo Jia by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal. Joe Rosenthal The Marine Corps War Meorial is a sybol of Aerica s gratitude to the United States Marines who died in cobat. The statue portrays one of the ost faous events of World War II: the U.S. victory of Iwo Jia, a sall island in the Pacific Ocean near Japan. Photograph of Raising the Flag on Iwo Jia by Joe Rosenthal for the Associated Press Early on the orning of February 19, 1945, a sall Aerican flag was raised on Mount Suribachi after a long fight on the island. Later that afternoon, a larger Aerican flag was raised by six arines (Michael Strank, Harlon H. Block, Franklin R. Sousley, Rene A. Gagnon, Ira Hayes, and John H. Bradley). News photographer Joe Rosenthal caught the afternoon raising of the flag in an award-winning picture. Felix W. de Weldon, a Navy sculptor, was so oved Mount Suribachi by the picture that he created a livesized odel of it. The sculpture was officially dedicated by President Eisenhower on Noveber 10, 1954.

The eorial stands about 78 feet tall overall. The rifle and the carbine carried by two of the figures are 16 and 12 feet long, and the canteen would hold 32 quarts of water. The base of the eorial is ade of Swedish granite. Written in gold are the naes and dates of Marine Corps engageents since the founding of the organization and the inscription: "In honor and eory of the en of the United States Marine Corps who have given their lives to their country since Noveber 10, 1775."

20 Mount Rushore Thoas Jefferson George Washington In the Black Hills of South Dakota, stands the national eorial, Mount Rushore, created by Gutzon Borglu. Mount Rushore was designed as a testaent to the growth of the United States and its great leaders. This agnificent rock carving depicts the 60-foot high (18.3 ) faces of four great U.S. Presidents. They are: Theodore Roosevelt Abraha Lincoln Originally known to the Lakota Sioux Indians as Six Grandfathers, the ountain was renaed after Charles E. Rushore, a proinent New York lawyer, during an expedition in Borglu started drilling into the 6,200-foot Gutzon Borglu ountain in 1927; however, he died in 1941 before it could be coted. The head of Washington was coted first, followed by Jefferson and Lincoln. Roosevelt's head was unfinished when Mount Rushore prior to Borglu died. The eorial was construction, photographed finished later that year by his son, around 1905.
21 Lincoln. Borglu's original design was a sculpture of the four presidents to their waists, but tie and oney only provided for their heads. A siilar eorial honoring Crazy Horse, the Oglala Sioux Indian chief, is currently under developent nearby. A odel at the site depicting Mount Rushore's intended final design. August 30, 1936 Jefferson s dedication scheduled in conjunction with F.D.R. visit.
23 July 2, 1939 Roosevelt s dedication. Septeber 17, 1937 Lincoln in dedication in connection with 150th anniversary of the adoption of the constitution. October 31, 1941 Last day of drilling on the ountain. March 6, 1941 Death of Gutzon Borglu, work carried on by his son Lincoln.
24 How Was Mount Rushore Carved? How do you turn a ountain into a work of art? The faous sculptor Gutzon Borglu failiarized hiself with life asks, paintings, photographs and descriptions of the four presidents. He then created ulti odels which his worken could use as guides. The odels he created were sized at a ratio of 1:12-one inch on the odel would equal one foot on the ountain. He used these odels in conjunction with a ethod of easureent called the pointing syste. He had one set up on the odels and another on the ountain itself, using the ratio guidelines worken were able to figure out how uch rock to reove and where. Once an egg-shaped volue of rock had been exposed and prepared, the easureents were calculated for the facial features. Skilled blasters could dynaite within a few inches of a desired easureent. After rough facial features were shaped out, workers suspended by cables in swings called
25 Bosun chairs used pneuatic drills to honeycob the granite with closely spaced holes. This excess rock was chiseled off, and then workers buped away the drill holes and lines using pneuatic haers to create a sooth, white surface Where is Mount Rushore located? Who was it created by?
