The march started Los Angeles, CA and is going to Washington DC, to highlight Global Climate Change as a spiritual and moral issue, and seeking to change the heart and mind of the American people, our elected leaders, and people across the world to act now to address the climate crisis. The urgency of Global Climate Change as a spiritual and moral issue of the 21st Century was even proclaimed by Pope Francis on this past May 21st, Speaking to a massive crowd in Rome, the first Argentinean pope delivered a short address (en.radiovaticana.va/news/2014/05/21/ pope_at_audience:_if_we_destroy_creation,_it_will_destroy_us/en ),in which he argued that respect for the beauty of nature and the grandeur of the cosmos is a Christian value, noting that failure to care for the planet risks apocalyptic consequences. He went on to say: Creation is not a property, which we can rule over at will; or, even less, is the property of only a few: Francis also said that humanity s destruction of the planet is a sinful act, likening it to selfidolatry. The Great March will be coming from New Mexico and pass Wetmore and Penrose to rest in Cripple Creek for a week until it continues onto Denver, then turn east to Washington DC. All Souls will be hosting them on June 1st and 2nd preceding our hosting of them on June 8th and 9th. We will be inviting the entire Colorado Springs community to hear Michael Dowd and Connie Barlow about their quest and ministry regarding the real threats to all of us and future generations. For those who are unaware or not introduced to Michael Dowd and Connie Barlow they have been traveling North America over the last 12 years sharing with secular and religious audiences an inspiring side of science and the evolutionary significance of religion in their own brand of ministry detailed here at The Great March for Climate Action is comprised of the dedicated activists walking 3,000 miles seeking to draw regional and national attention to the global man-made crisis that more than any other threatens future generations and the fabric of life on this planet. You may view their route at I will be the Worship Associate and liaison for HPCUU and the group. Dowd and Barlow will be staying in their RV where they can park in our lot (along with a few other supporting members of the marchers). They will be seeking a friendly home to shower. I am in contact with Michael and Connie and will also request their itinerary as the local plans firm up. High Plains Church - Unitarian-Universalist 1825 Dominion Way Colorado Springs, CO 80918

3 Minister s Musings by Rev Beatrice Hitchcock Minister s Musings Page 3 e re beginning my last full month with you. July W 6th will be my last Sunday at High Plains Church. Already I am feeling the sadness of parting. Some of you are as well. It s time to be thinking about how to say goodbye. Some of you are experiencing anxiety, which is normal in times of change, but greetings and farewells are a natural part of life. Before we say goodbye, there s still time to celebrate the almost-two years we ve had together. Summer is here, and play is the theme for June. It s time to relax and have fun together. Let s make the most of the time we have together. You have a great minister coming in the Rev. Dana Lightsey. Meet her on Sunday, June 15th at the potluck picnic following the service. She ll be joining you formally in August. June Soul Matters Theme: PLAY! hat does it mean to be a person of play? W Children s play is most often joyful, spontaneous, freely chosen, imaginative, uninhibited, and purposeless. Adults tend to play in different ways organized sports, puzzles, card and board games. Adult play is often constrained by rules and regulations, and may involve winners and losers, even when someone is only playing for their personal best. Many adults are not very good at non-serious play. Play requires engagement. Passive amusement is something else. It may be seemingly purposeless, like watching television for hours on end, but passivity rules out play. Diversions offer a distraction from work or serious pursuits, and can be good for you, like recreation involving exercise, but they aren t play unless they are purposeless. Experts on the social effects of play say that people who engage in purely enjoyable and purposeless activities tend to be less violent, more empathic and trusting, and more adaptable to life s challenges. Unfortunately in our culture today, doing something without purpose is considered a waste of time at least in our adult lives. But we need to engage in purposeless activities throughout all our ages and stages. Human beings are made for play. Play is the exuberant expression of our being. It points us to our true selves and is the fount of creativity and spirituality. The sages have known the spiritual value of play for eons; they have known that play keeps our search for meaning humble. ~ Kathy Tew Rickey This month we will explore our own ability to play -- at home, at work, and in worship. When was the last time you played in the carefree manner of a child? Do you play at all? Is it fun? How can you tap into your authentic self through play? How is play vital to your spiritual fitness? Hoping you ll play and have great fun this month. With love, from Rev. Beatrice Minister s Schedule Rev. Beatrice Hitchcock: office phone x 2, cell phone , minister@hpcuu.org. 6 Page 6 Spring Carnival Spring Carnival Update and Thank Yous By Jessica Laike O ur Spring Carnival took place on May 17, 2014 and while due to weather and conflicting events, we didn t have the turn out we hoped for, the event was still definitely a success! We had nearly 100 people in attendance, many of which were NOT members of High Plains, and told us they found out about the carnival from seeing it in the Independent and Gazette online event calendars! Our goal of out-reach and bringing new people through our doors was definitely achieved! The event was staffed by over 40 church and community volunteers without which this event could not have happened. This event was a true testament to what can be achieved when we all pull together and I hope will serve as an inspiration and model for future events. We had live entertainment from various performance groups throughout the day happening inside while outside there were carnival games, a bounce house, a chalk art contest, face painting, tarot reading and henna tattoos. We were also lucky enough to have one of the most in-demand fire-breathers and performers in Colorado Springs, Wally Burkholder, donate his time to perform for us throughout the day. It was truly a magical day full of fun and laughter, but it could not have happened without the following people. Please take a moment and read through all of the names on the next page of the people who made this event possible. (Listed in no particular order)

9 Acting for Social Justice By Julie Feuerbach id you know that one Sunday per month we give D away the offering from the congregation? Each Fourth Sunday, offerings collected during the service go to a non-profit organization that represents our Unitarian Universalist principles. Representatives from these organizations are invited to attend the service and give a brief talk about the mission and activities of their organization, after which the offering is collected. Following is a partial list of some of the groups that HPCUU has helped support in this way: Bikers Against Child Abuse Colorado Springs Fine Art Center Autism and Asperger Connections Care 4 Kids Worldwide Colorado Springs Pridefest Middle East Peace Project TESSA (domestic violence victim assistance) Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Fostering Hope Foundation Interfaith Hospitality Network (help for homeless families) This is one way that members and friends of High Plains Church give back to our community and live out our mission! This month we will be exploring and sharing what's great about getting older. Realizing that our time is limited, does it become easier to let go of activities or relationships that we don't enjoy and cultivate the ones we do? With age hopefully a certain wisdom comes. Have our coping skills become better allowing us to better take things in stride? Are we more confident, more certain of who we are and comfortable with our own identity? What are some of the other benefits you have discovered about aging? Anyone with ideas to share or questions is most welcome to attend regardless of your age. We can celebrate together with a bit of the bubbly. Contact Betty Davis at if you have questions about this group.

11 Neighboring Faiths Middle School Service By Al Sly Neighboring Faiths Page 11 n Sunday, May 18, the congregation was transported to various corners of the world as Islamic prayers echoed O through the sanctuary to open the service followed by chants and readings from a wide variety of religions. Kelly Adams, Cindy Bosch, and Andi Hammond led our team of middle schoolers through a superb journey through 12 of the world s religions to the delight of the audience. Some of the congregation thought it was one of the best presentations ever put on by one of our youth groups. The service was the culmination of a lot of hard work by our middle school class and their teachers. The group visited the following faiths over a period of nine months to prepare for this highly educational event for people of all ages: Greek Orthodox Jewish United Church of Christ Evangelical Islam Lakota Sweat Lodge Pagan Ceremony Hindu Baha'i Buddhist Scientology Jehovah Witness Archangel Michael Temple Beit Torah Vista Grande Church For All Nations Colorado Muslim Society Lodge of David Bodden Diane McRae & Meg Evans Sri Venkateswara Temple Baha'i Faith Center Soka Gakkai International Denver Scientology Center Acacia Congregation Congratulate Kelly Adams, Cindy Bosch, and Andi Hammond, and our middle school class for a job well done in exposing our congregation to these faiths as one of our principles to understand and accept people of all faiths.
