2 May Flowers As I have wondered what to write for this month's newsletter, a phrase has continued to come back to my mind. That phrase is April showers bring May flowers. Perhaps it simply has to do with the fact that it is April. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that it has rained a significant amount this weekend. Perhaps. Or perhaps it is that God has something He wants us to hear from that little proverb. There was a song some years ago that stated the same intent differently. The song stated where there is always sunshine, there is a desert below. Both of these statements want us to understand that there are good things that can come from what, at moments, may seem like undesirable events. There is a story about a man who helped a butterfly out of its chrysalis, only to have the butterfly emerge with shriveled wings. The struggle the butterfly goes through to emerge forces fluids from its swollen body into the wings in order to enable flight. The point from all of this is the reminder that although showers may come into life, if we have the right attitude and let the Lord work in our lives according to His will, good things can come. There lies the catch. The ability to see the good things comes from a willingness to look beyond the current circumstances to the end result. The catch is also the willingness to seek what God would have us learn. We will never smell May flowers if we are so busy looking at and grumbling about April showers that we never hear what God whispers to our heart. There are times when God wants to teach us something, but we are so distracted by the moment that we miss the lesson. So as the rains fall look for the flowers that God wants to bloom in your life. Pastor Keith Recipes and tips for a healthy lifestyle Skillet Fish with Lemon Tarragon Butter 2 teaspoons reduced fat margarine or butter 4 teaspoons lemon juice, divided 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel 1/4 teaspoon prepared mustard 1/4 teaspoon dried tarragon leaves 1/8 teaspoon salt 2 lean white fish fillets (4 oz. each), rinsed and patted dry 1/4 teaspoon paprika By Patty Nance Combine butter, 2 teaspoons lemon juice, lemon peel, mustard, tarragon and salt in small bowl. Blend well with fork; set aside. Coat 12 inch nonstick skillet with nonstick cooking spray. Heat over medium heat until hot. Drizzle fillets with remaining 2 teaspoons lemon juice. Sprinkle one side of each fillet with paprika. Place fillets in skillet, paprika side down; cook 3 minutes. It won t be a professional directory, but just a way of letting new people know who other members of the congregation are. He is using the pictures from the last directory, but would like updated pictures as families grow and change. A snap shot is fine. Pictures can be ed to shemmer@twc.com or give them to him at church. If you need someone to take a picture of you or your family, let Steve know and he can bring a camera to church on Sunday morning.

5 Looking Back by Shirley Kahle Things that happened at Holland United Methodist Church March 23 The lights went out during the Lenten service. They soon came back on but the organ wouldn t play so we had to sing with the piano. March 27 Michelle Erwin, Paul Peach & Laura Roberts were confirmed. One hundred eighty-two people were present at the church service. Everyone passed by the confirmands and received a palm branch. The youth, teen and senior choirs all sang together Hosanna. Roger Reller sang Jerusalem. Deb Neukam and Vicki Stephens presented the confirmands with a book Record of Your Confirmation. April 3 Easter Sunday. Youth and teen choir sang Alleluia. The senior choir sang Hallelujah, Jesus Lives. Ron Henke sang The Holy City. We had 212 present at the church service. At 7:30 p.m., the senior choir presented a cantata From Death to Life with dramatization of Golgotha, Gethsemane and the tomb. Ron Reller portrayed Jesus; Pilate: Mark Hunefeld; Guards: Dean Henke & Jeff Wibbeler; Disciples: Ryan Reller, Eric Smith & Philip Peach; Women: Chris Hilsmeyer, Melodie Kahle, Pam Peach; Angel: Jolene Sattler; 2 men at the tomb: Jody Kahle & Mike Hilsmeyer; Mary & Jesus: Kathy & Korey Partenheimer; Joseph: Paul Lindsey. Refreshments for the choir and cast were served by Ray Partenheimer, Joe Schmutzler, Ron Henke, and Harold Henke. The Holland Dutchman Crop and Craft Day held at our church on Saturday, April 22 was a huge success. A big thank you to Angie and her committee consisting of Ann, Beth W., Dianne, and Robin. They know how to plan a fund raiser! They were able to clear over $6000 for Relay for Life projects. Also, thanks to the UMW for furnishing all the food for snacks and the meals. Thanks to Lavonne and Mary Jane for helping in the kitchen.

6 Walk to Jerusalem The Lenten Walk to Jerusalem, which is 6335 miles away, was again a success for the Holland congregations participating. Adding miles together from all who turned them in, we 'walked' past Jerusalem for a total of miles. This was accomplished not only by exercise but by other positive physical and spiritual activities. The winner is each person who contributed to this goal by performing these positive actions. Hopefully some of them are now weekly habits. Thanks to all who participated but especially to Beth Winkler who led the Monday night walks in town and Cassie Heile who led the Thursday night walks. Mark your calendars for the annual American Red Cross blood drive coming up on July 18, 2017 at Holland United Methodist Church. For communication purposes, all events scheduled at the churches must be put on the office calendar as well as the calendars at the churches. Please call the church office ( ) when scheduling your event. Holland United Methodist Church will host Vacation Bible School 29 A.D. Marketplace June 19-23, Children get to attend workshops, learn about Hebrew customs & participate in Hebrew home activities. A lot of help will be needed. Tribal mothers, workshop leaders, characters for plays, and market shopkeepers are a few of the spots that will need to be filled, plus much more. There is something for everyone to help with! Please keep these dates in mind and let God speak to your heart about volunteering to help!
