If you have any questions, please contact the camp office at info@lutherpark.org or (715) Grace and Peace from our Lord Jesus Christ, Hello all! First, I would like to thank you for your ministry of being a matching congregation to a parish in Malawi. Let me share firsthand that your prayers, support, and ministry are very much appreciated. As I learn the ropes of this new call, I hope to establish more frequent communication between both church bodies. Please note that often communication from Malawi is next to impossible. The resources simply are not there. Even the cost of paper for a handwritten letter can be cost prohibitive. Last summer, I had the honor of being one of the teaching pastors at the Pastors' Academy. It was literally a life-changing experience. In fact, I would not be writing this, nor in this new call, if I had not gone. Your financial support as a matching congregation helps make the academy possible, and is of great benefit to the pastors of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi. Malawi is a developing country with a very low-earned income potential. Last year, the average yearly earned income was just $200. Without our help, the Pastors' Academy would be impossible. The Pastors' Academy is a continuing education opportunity for the pastors in Malawi. At the time of the academy, the pastors will converge upon the Lutheran compound/headquarters in Lilongwe, Malawi. Once there, they will be instructed by visiting pastors from our synod. Please note that the visiting pastors cover their own expenses, including transport to Africa. Further education is needed by pastors no matter where they serve. In Malawi, our companion pastors often do not have access to current reviews and commentaries. Often their education is not as complete as what rostered leaders here enjoy or at least complete. Through the academy, our companion pastors, evangelists, and women can receive biblical interpretation and teaching that is in line with Lutheran Theology. They then can take the grace-infused understanding, the Gospel, back to their parishes and proclaim the saving word with authority. Really, the academy changes the lives of the participants and those whom they encounter. Through our participation, the grace of God through Jesus Christ is proclaimed, planted, and returned. It's all good, and from my perspective, as a past teacher; entirely necessary. Your support literally changes lives for the better. It also provides transportation, room and board, and education. Please prayerfully consider supporting the academy once again. In years past, it was about $250 U.S. to cover the cost of your matching parish pastor. Please consider increasing your gift amount as costs have gone up, and not all pastors in Malawi are blessed with partnership on this side. Thank You and God Bless, Rev. John A. Sutherland

10 Health Ministry Greetings! As we move into February Heart Month, I encourage you to slow down and consider the following quote: Many people, who would not think of putting too much air pressure in their car s tires, constantly put too much pressure on their hearts and arteries by living each day at a hectic pace. They catch a bus, grab a bite to eat, dash off a letter, run to the store, and contact a client. They are so continually on the go that they miss a lot along the way. They live their lives in a constant state of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion. Is this YOU? Remember the advice of the psalmist: Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10. On Tuesday, February 25, 7:30 p.m., a Taizé Service will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church. If you haven t had a chance to experience this opportunity to take the advice of the psalmist, please join others from our community in this unique service. Shalom, Becky Kneer, Your Parish Nurse Watch for details in the bulletin for date of the next Adult Forum in the series. Mental Illness & Families of Faith Coming soon! Thanks to everyone for supporting the bed net project! A total of $1,140 was raised to purchase family bed nets...helping to prevent malaria carried by mosquitoes!! THANK YOU! A blood donation is truly a gift of life. In less than an hour, a person can donate one unit (a pint) of blood that can be separated into individual components and can save multiple lives! For example, from one pint of blood Red blood cells can be used for trauma or surgery patients; Plasma, the liquid portion of blood, can be given to patients with clotting problems. Platelets, often given to cancer and transplant patients, clot the blood when cuts or other wounds occur. Anti-hemophilic factor ( AHF ) is also used for clotting factors for persons with hemophilia, a hereditary bleeding disorder. In a recent study by the National Blood Foundation, more than 5,000 people who were current or past blood donors were asked why they donate blood: nearly 75% said that they give blood to help others. Some said that giving blood makes them feel good about themselves, supports their local communities and hospitals, and pays back society for the times when they or their families have needed blood transfusions in the past. The need for blood is great...on any given day, approximately 38,000 units of red blood cells are needed! FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS about blood donation. DOES IT HURT? You may feel a sting in the beginning (when a needle is placed in your vein) but there should be no discomfort during the donation. WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR DONORS? Generally you must be at least 17 years of age, at least 110 pounds, and in good health; 38% of Americans are eligible to donate; of those only 8% do donate. Blood Donation...The Need is Great! DO I HAVE ENOUGH BLOOD IN MY BODY TO DONATE? Yes, the body contains pints. CAN I GET AIDS OR HEPATITIS FROM DONATING? There is no risk of getting AIDS or other blood infection by donation (each collection kit is sterile and is used only once). But if you have AIDS or other bloodborne disease, a person receiving your donated blood may get that infection. That s why blood bank staff must ask so many questions about your health, lifestyle, and disease risk factors before accepting your blood (all information is confidential). HOW OFTEN CAN I DONATE? You may donate whole blood once every 56 days (eight weeks). If only certain cells are taken from your body (e.g., platelets), you may donate more often. DOES DONATED BLOOD KEEP INDEFINITELY UNTIL IT IS USED? No, different components of blood can be kept for different periods of time: some can be frozen for up to ten years, while others must be transfused within 24 hours of donation. This is why we ask healthy donors to donate repeatedly throughout the year! WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON BLOOD TYPE? The approximate distribution of blood types in the USA is as follows: O positive 38%, B positive 9% O negative 7%, B negative 2% A positive 34%, AB positive 3% A negative 6%, AB negative 1% In an emergency, anyone can receive type O blood cells, and type AB individuals can receive any ABO type; so, people with type O blood are called universal donors and those with type AB blood are called universal recipients. HOW YOU CAN HELP? To find out where you can donate go to: Upcoming blood drives in our area: Mon., Feb. 3: UW-Stout, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tues., Feb. 18: Christ Lutheran Church, noon-6 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call: 800-RED-CROSS.
