1 AASR, VALLEY OF NEW CASTLE Volume 7, Issue 1 February, 2014 THE VALLEY CLIPPER Spring 2014 Reunion Plan now to attend the Valley of New Castle Spring 2014 Reunion. The Class Honoree for the 213 th Reunion of the Valley of New Castle is Michael R. Matis, 32, M.S.A. This Convenient Reunion will be Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12. Friday evening will begin with the Lodge of Perfection s 4, 6, and 14. Saturday will continue with the Council s 16, the Rose Croix s 18, and the Consistory s 20, 31 and 32. Enjoyment will be had by all that attend. Wonderful fellowship can always be found at the Valley of New Castle events. Master Masons who would like to become members of the Scottish Rite may submit petitions now in order to participate in this event, be invited to the April 4 Spring Reunion Banquet, and have their pictures taken. Petitions can be obtained from your Lodge s Valley Ambassador, at or in the Valley Office. Petitions will be accepted as late as April 3 for the Spring Reunion. We want to include the candidates pictures in the Reunion book. Those received after April 3 may be held for the Fall Reunion. People join people, not organizations: In order to recruit new members, you have to "sell" what you already have. Encourage your lodge brother to come to an event or join at a class because several of his brothers already belong; its a great way to continue that relationship while meeting men from other lodges. At the end of the day, it matters not what kind of resources your Valley has, or its history; to the new recruit, the here and the now is what is at the forefront of his mind. Be sure to emphasize the fraternal experience he will gain from seeking membership. Our Mission: Provide Inspiration for our members through meaningful programs and degrees. Provide Convenient opportunities for our members to enhance their lives. Provide Enjoyable programs and fellowship activities for our members. 2 Page 2 Sovereign Prince s Message Brothers, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas with family and friends, and that you have a joyous New Year. Thank you for the support you have given me throughout the year. I look forward to seeing you at future Valley events. Always remember to support the charities of the Scottish Rite. Gordon E. Hensel, 32, Sovereign Prince Thrice Potent Master s Message Greetings Brethren, This column will be my last as Thrice Potent Master. It has been a good year for the Lodge of Perfection. The Oktoberfest was a huge success. I am proud to announce that for the first time ever, the Oktoberfest turned a profit. We were able to give proceeds to the Rainbow Girls, the Children's Dyslexia Center of Western PA, the Almoner's Fund and the Scottish Rite Masonic Family Clowns. I would like to extend a special thank you to the Eintracht Singing Society, who donated their time and talent, the Scottish Rite Masonic Family Clowns, the Rainbow Girls, Burke s Bavarian Brass Band, and the Hiram's Scottish Riders. Without them, this event would not have taken place. Fraternally, Timothy M. D. Rayner, 32, Thrice Potent Master From the Secretary s Desk THE VALLEY CLIPPER My Brethren, first of all, it is my hope that the holiday season that just passed was one filled with good food, good friends, and good fellowship. But winter is here; what a boring time of the year! Except for those lucky few who migrate to the warmer climates, the rest of us must just settle in and wait for spring and the sun to return to PA. The Fall Reunion attracted 41 new members to become members of the Valley of New Castle. The degree work performed by all the bodies of the Valley was excellent, and it gave these 41 new members a tremendous view into the workings of our organization as well as the moral lessons that shape us personally. I would like to personally thank each and every one that worked so hard to make the Fall Reunion a success. We now need to start working on building the Spring Class for the Reunion which will be held on April 11 & 12, So now is the time to start looking around at the members in your Lodge and take the opportunity to invite them to join you in the Valley of New Castle by becoming a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. If we all work together, we can make the Spring Class bigger than the Fall Class. In closing, I am looking forward to seeing you at our stated meeting on March 19, Until then, may your travels be safe, and may you keep warm. Sincerely & Fraternally, Howard E. Glovier, 33, M.S.A., Valley Secretary We are looking for your pictures and stories to publish in the Valley of New Castle Clipper and to post on the Valley website: valleyofnc.org Please send your articles, pictures, and ideas to the Valley office before March 3. webmaster@valleyofnc.org or mail to: AASR, Valley of New Castle, 110 E. 3 VOLUME VOLUME 7, ISSUE 7, ISSUE 1 1 Brethren, Commander-In-Chief s Message Page 3 Page 3 What a great year it was in 2013! We had two great Reunions that brought in over 70 new members. Some are already active in the Valley; while others have shown real interest to be active in several of our Valley functions. The Steak Fry in August was well-attended, and everyone had their choice of good food from a great variety of different items. In October, the Ocktoberfest also went over well with a record crowd attending and participating in a well-stocked Country Store. In December, the joint Christmas party with the Legion of Honor and the Consistory was also well-attended, and continues to get bigger every year. Also in December was our first bus trip, which also went extremely well; all had a great time with a variety of things to do! Our first stop consisted of shopping at Cabela s and Russell Stover s Candies in the Wheeling, WV area, followed by great food, lodging, and gaming at the Islands Casino. After our overnight stay at the Islands, the real climax of our trip was at Oglebay, where we were able to tour the Oglebay Mansion and see a Christmas Laser Light Show followed by a tour of all of the super Christmas light displays at night, followed by dinner and fellowship. This upcoming year brings new opportunities for our members with a very interesting itinerary. On March 14 th we will hold our Annual Fish Fry where we will have an expert speaker who will present information about Marcellus Shale drilling. We are also planning more bus trips, more fun times and good fellowship opportunities. Additionally, there will be new opportunities upcoming for the Degree Teams; we will see the new 6 video at our Spring Reunion. We will continue the Reunion banquets before each Reunion and encourage our members to come out and show their support for the new members. It gives us a great chance to meet and get to know the new members, and see the enthusiasm that our new members bring to the Valley. Remember that new members present us with new life blood for our Valley; one which offers us new visions on what will help the Valley grow as we strive to meet the challenges of the future. The combination of new members and current members can present us with an opportunity to travel a new and exciting road; a road that gives our members the variety of old, new, and yet-to-be-discovered activities that can make the Valley one that meets the needs of all of our members. We are looking for members that would like to help with the Almoner's program. This is a great opportunity to help and get to know our members, and show them that we are a fraternity that cares about our members. May each and every member have a great New Year! Charles R. Terwilliger, 33, M.S.A., Commander-in-Chief May 4 Impersonators Concert The Valley of New Castle will be hosting Patsy Cline, Roy Orbison, and Elvis! Well, not really, but we WILL have three great impersonators perform for us: Dottie Aiken Reynolds as Patsy Cline, Dorian A. Baxter as Elvis, and a Roy Orbison impersonator. This is certain to be a fantastic event that we won t soon forget. Look for details on and in the next Clipper.

5 VOLUME 7, ISSUE 1 From the Membership Chairman Page 5 As we approach the New Year, let us think back on those who have come into your Lodge recently and have not yet had the opportunity to enjoy what we have to offer in Scottish Rite. For some of those, you have thought it too early at the time to push them forward into more Brotherhood. This could be because of their family concerns, job considerations and, yes, even monetary issues. Take time to analyze each situation and plan the best time to strike. They deserve this advancement more than they know at this point, so take advantage when the timing is right. I think we claimed much low-hanging fruit last year with the temporary reduction in entrance fees, Anniversary Medals and great enthusiasm by our signers. We ve had a good year for membership and it seems we gained some great people, from new members I ve talked to. They bring us many talents to make use of, and we appreciate every last one. The Spring Reunion will come up fast in April and we need to get candidates early so we can have them plan on the New Member s Dinner and photoop for the Reunion booklet. See details on page 1 in this Clipper. What a great time it was having each one come forward, introduce his lady and tell us a little about themselves. All members should try and get out for this occasion to meet our new people. 10 VOLUME 7, ISSUE 1 Page 10 New Castle Chapter, Hiram s Scottish Riders Motorcycle Club Greetings Brethren, This will be my last column as the president of Hiram s Scottish Riders Motorcycle Club. It has been a honor to preside over the Club the last two years. The Club has done very well over that time, reaching our goal of raising $10,000 dollars for the Learning Center. We ran several successful fundraisers, had some very nice rides, made some good friends, but unfortunately, we have lost some good friends. Over the last two years, I have seen the Club come together to achieve some good things. I love watching and being part of Masons coming together and working towards a common goal. This to me is the heart of Freemasonry. Pictured here are Past Presidents Timothy M.D. Rayner, 32 and Jeffrey J. Heasley, 33 presenting a check to the Chairman of the Board for the Children s Dyslexia Center, David J. Smith, 33, M.S.A. Now it is the time to turn the reins over to Jack Armagost. I have no doubt the Club will continue to do well under Jack s leadership. Meetings will resume in March on the fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Supreme Council Lounge of the Scottish Rite Cathedral in New Castle. As always, we are looking for ideas for rides and good men to ride with us. If you re interested in good rides, good times, good friends with a good goal, please come to a meeting, or call the Valley Office at Look for us on Facebook! PLEASE DO NOT TEXT AND DRIVE! Timothy M. D. Rayner, 32, Past President, New Castle Chapter, HSRMC High Twelve Club Welcomes All Master Masons The New Castle High Twelve Club is a great opportunity to share lunch and fellowship with your brother Master Masons from Lodges throughout the area. Each month, we have a casual, friendly gathering right here at the Scottish Rite Cathedral. And each month, we have a brief but thought-provoking presentation about a Masonic topic. Join us on February 5th, March 5th, and the first Wednesday of each month at 12 noon in the East Dining Room and check us out - lunch is just $7. Also remember that our Club is open to all Masons (including brethren who aren't Scottish Rite members, Ohio Masons, Prince Hall Masons, etc., etc.). So instead of coming alone, how about calling a few of your brothers and inviting them to join you? Women and other non-masons are welcome to join us for lunch and conversations, but they can't become members of High Twelve. Sorry. Please note that we do not meet in July or December. To learn more, contact Brother David Williamson at DWilliamson@pafreemasons.org

11 VOLUME 7, ISSUE 1 Page 11 Toasting an Historic Pitcher Hilary Anderson Stelling, Scottish Rite Masonic Museum and Library In past centuries, American Masons socialized, celebrated and toasted together all activities that called for drinking punch, wine and other festive beverages. Brethren used pitchers, like this one, and other vessels to share libations in a convivial setting. One lodge historian noted that in the early 1800s, members of Saint Paul Lodge in Groton, Massachusetts, made a drink to the health of every candidate who was initiated, crafted or raised. Lodge inventories taken around the same time show that many lodges were well-prepared to offer hospitality. One Boston-area lodge numbered three two-quart pitchers and six pint pitchers as well as a dozen punch glasses and sixty-three wine glasses among its possessions ample supplies for a lodge of about thirty members. English ceramics manufacturers, working in Staffordshire, Liverpool, Sunderland and other locations, crafted a dazzling variety of transfer-printed earthenware pitchers for the domestic and American markets. Among the thousands of vessels they produced and ornamented, they decorated many with images calculated to appeal to Freemasons, be they beautifying their lodges or their own homes. This pitcher, made around 1800 and colored with a bright, canary yellow glaze, featured two transfer-printed images that were likely interesting to Masonic consumers. On one side, makers ornamented the pitcher with figures representing a lodge Master and lodge Wardens, along with a selection of Masonic symbols and a variation of the arms of the Moderns surround by a fanciful border of flowers, elaborate curves and flowing ribbons. Beneath the figures and symbols are lines from The Entered Apprentice s Song by Matthew Birkhead (d. ca. 1723): "The World is in pain the secret to gain for a Free and Accepted Mason that reminded brethren of their obligation. The image on the other side of the pitcher celebrated a feat of engineering and the accomplishment of a prominent Mason. This transfer print showed a bridge, noted as the Iron Bridge Over Wear near Sunderland, also known as the Wearmouth Bridge or the Sunderland Bridge. This all cast-iron bridge spanned, according to the notation on the pitcher, 236 feet and reached 100 feet in height. It linked two communities that had previously only been connected by ferry. When builders finished the bridge in 1796, it was the world s largest single-span cast iron bridge. With an unimpeded arch-shaped span, the bridge allowed tall masted ocean-going ships to travel freely on the river. These ships carried coal, an economically important product in the area, to London and other areas by sea. Local landowner, member of Parliament and Mason, Rowland Burdon (ca ) supported the construction of the bridge financially and politically. He also participated in the Masonic ceremonies marking both the laying of the foundation stone of the bridge in 1793 and the opening of the bridge in The latter celebration took place before, what one newspaper of the time described as an immense concourse of people (computed at 50,000 persons). Typically the artists who created transfer prints for ceramics manufacturers used published sources such as book illustrations and membership certificates as their inspiration. As a wellpublicized engineering marvel and a source of regional pride, the Iron Bridge both captured the public s and many artists imaginations. Scholars have estimated that over twenty different illustrations of the bridge can be found on different ceramic forms produced in the early 1800s. The engraver who created this image seems to have signed his work with his initials, E. A. As yet, research has not identified this maker. Like all fashions, the vogue for transfer-printed pitcher for use in the lodge or at home, eventually faded. Not only did consumers seek new forms and novel kinds of decoration, but lodge sociability changed. By the early 1820s, many lodges decided to stop serving alcohol in deference to the emerging temperance movement. Many lodges once-prized transfer-print pitchers also fell victim to loss or damage during lodge closures in the anti-masonic era from Luckily, many of these intriguing pitchers escaped the scrap heap and, eventually, regained status as valued possessed in lodges and museum collections throughout the country. If you or your lodge have questions about a historic pitcher, please feel free to get in touch with the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum and Library at and we will be happy to tell you more about your lodge s treasures.
