2 Page 2 Thrice Potent Master s Message Page 11 LEGION OF HONOR NEWS I want to thank the Brothers and Officers of the Valley of New Castle for the opportunity to serve as Thrice Potent Master. I also want to congratulate all new and returning officials. A special thank you to Howard for his many years of service and best wishes to Randy as he steps into the role of Secretary. I hope to have a great year in the Valley, as all Officers are coming up with new ways to improve all that we do to support the Valley and the programs, to try and increase interest and involvement by all members. Also, to try and attract new members. You can find my number and if you are interested in helping with any project, especially the Oktoberfest. Fraternally, Bro. W. David Hazlet, III, 32, Thrice Potent Master Dear Sincerely and Fraternally, Brother, Most Wise Master Sovereign Prince s Message A new year begins for the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. New Officers have taken their place at the head of three of the bodies of our Consistory. Each of us hope we will be able to find some new way to improve our fraternity by making it more enjoyable and meaningful to you, our brothers. To any of our brothers with young ideas, I would like to talk to you. Some fresh ideas would be welcome. We are members of the oldest fraternity in the world. Many of our old traditions will be here for a long time, but there is no reason not to embrace new ways of doing some things. You are encouraged to come to the many events planned for the coming year and offer suggestions. Together, we can make a great fraternity even greater. In the last year, we have been blessed with many new members who have joined us. If you haven t come to one of our events for a while, please consider returning. These new members need your experience to help guide them. See you soon. Fraternally, Bro. Richard A. Palm, 32, Sovereign Prince Fraternal Greetings, Most Wise Master s Message Commander-In-Chief s Message Mail call for all members of the New Castle Legion of Honor. The first thing that came before the membership at the Stated meeting of the New Castle Legion of Honor held on April 6, 2017 was that we will be holding Meetings on May 4, 2017 and June 1, A call is going out to all the members to come and join us, renew some old friendships and make some new ones, hope to see you there soon. Some news from the last meeting April 6, 2017, it was on motion approved, of the majority of the members in attendance that the profits from the jewelry sales would go to the New Castle Learning Center. The next item that came before the membership was that maybe the Legion of Honor needs to open the jewelry box more times a year than the two reunions that it is now currently opened. This will make it easier for members of the Valley of New Castle to purchase items that they need. So the majority of the members in attendance decided that we would try opening the jewelry box at the next two Stated Meetings of the Valley of New Castle, which will be held on June 21, 2017 and October 18, 2017 to see how this works. So, if you need to purchase a new decal to put on that new car you purchased, or maybe you are looking for something to give to that new member that asked you to sign his petition, stop by the Legion of Honor Jewelry box to pick up a couple of items. Well hopefully the warm weather is here to stay, as I am writing this message to all of you, the Spring Reunion has passed and we received 7 new members if you weren t aware. There will be a 1 day class on September 23rd for new Blue Lodge candidates. All the details are not available yet, but they should be seen and sent to the Lodge Secretaries. This will be a great opportunity to seek out prospective new candidates for the Valley s Fall Reunion on November 4th. Hope every one had a chance to thank Howard for his many years of service as our Valley Secretary. We wish him and Judy well in their retirement. Also take the opportunity to welcome our new Secretary, Randall Connell, as he starts his new adventure as the Valley Secretary. There are a lot of activities planned for the upcoming months. Details are inside the Clipper. The next member s activities fundraiser will be rolling out in August. Everyone will receive a letter in the mail explaining it. With continued support from our members, we are able to keep some of the costs down on our member activities. Ex: Stag Fish Fry and dues. Dues has been frozen for 3 yrs at $ The Officers are working together to progress the Valley forward. If you haven t been to a stated meeting for a while, plan on attending the June meeting Wednesday, June 21st. Hope to see many as possible of you there. The turnout for the March meeting was very much appreciated, new Officers to serve the Valley were installed that evening. Hope everyone enjoys the coming warmer weather, as always this is your Valley. Any suggestions or comments to progress forward are welcome. If the need arises and the Valley can be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the Valley Secretary. Sincerely & fraternally Bro. Paul D. Graham, 32 Commander of Legion of Honor Yours in good health, Jeffrey P. Jackson, 33

3 Page 10 VOLUME VOLUME 13 ISSUE 13 ISSUE 1 1 Page Page 3 3 A Fraternity Goes to War: The Lost History of a Mason and his Masonic Civil War Certificate By John J. Coelho, Archivist, Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library In the February 2016 issue of The Northern Light, I introduced a Civil War Masonic War Certificate issued by the Grand Lodge of Illinois to Corporal Phineas Lovejoy of the 3rd Regiment, Illinois Cavalry, on December 23, In this article, I will explore the history of Lovejoy s certificate, in the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library collection, in greater detail. From April 1861 to the end of September 1863, the Grand Lodge of Illinois issued 1,757 Masonic war certificates to Illinois Master Masons, and eventually to the sons of Master Masons. These traveling certificates could vouch for their good Masonic standing to their Confederate brothers whom they would shortly meet upon the battlefield. As Michael A. Halleran explained in his 2010 book, The Better Angels of Our Nature, Freemasons on both sides of the irrepressible conflict looked for ways to demonstrate their Masonic affiliation to one another, especially to Freemasons on the opposing side. Some Freemasons used Masonic pins to convey their Masonic affiliation, while others carried with them their diploma -- the nineteenth-century equivalent of a dues card. In the case of injury or death, these soldiers hoped that their Masonic identification would induce their fellow Freemasons, regardless of their side in the war, to care for them or to bury them and mark their grave. Phineas Lovejoy (ca ), born in Pennsylvania in about 1832, was the first-born child of Jabez ( ) and Catherine Lovejoy ( ), and the first cousin once removed of the abolitionist newspaper editor Elijah P. Lovejoy ( ) and his brother, United States Congressman Owen Lovejoy( ), a political ally of Abraham Lincoln. Census records for the years 1850 and 1860 document that Lovejoy worked as a farmer, and articles in local newspapers capture his active political life, including his election as town clerk in 1856 and his re-election in The Proceedings of the Grand Lodge of Illinois reveal that Lovejoy was initiated into the fraternity at Columbus Lodge, No. 227 (Columbus, Illinois), in 1859, and that he served as the Lodge s Junior Warden and then its Master in According to the Illinois Civil War Muster and Descriptive Rolls, like many Illinoisans, Lovejoy swiftly joined the army on August 5, 1861, shortly after the war began, and that under the command of Brigadier General Samuel Curtis ( ), Lovejoy and his regiment took part in the Battle of Pea Ridge in early March Phineas Lovejoy did not survive the war and the cause of his death has not yet been identified. We do know that Lovejoy died at the age of thirty, onboard the Steamer White Cloud near Memphis, Tennessee. Further research has also provided a clearer picture of Phineas Lovejoy s life in his final months. After Brigadier General Curtis initial success at the Battle of Pea Ridge, his following attack on Little Rock stalled badly, and Lovejoy and his regiment were forced to fall back to Jacksonport, Arkansas, for resupply by Union riverboats traveling up the White River. When low water conditions in the river prevented this resupply, Lovejoy and his regiment began a grueling twenty-four day forced march on short supplies and with little water to Helena, Arkansas, the largest town on the Mississippi River and a natural supply base for Union operations. Historian Rhonda M. Kohl described Helena as a sickly place in her 2004 article, This Godforsaken Town : Death and Disease at Helena, Arkansas, , and as soon as Lovejoy s exhausted regiment arrived in Helena, dysentery, typhoid, and malaria quickly overtook the men. On August 9, 1862, Phineas Lovejoy died onboard the side-wheeled steamer White Cloud, just offshore of Memphis, the same day he mustered out of the army. A report from the Chicago Daily Tribune on Wednesday, August 13, 1862, documented the steamer s arrival in Memphis but failed to mention the death of any of its passengers, including Phineas Lovejoy. In light of this information, it seems likely that he was seriously ill when he boarded the White Cloud and died while being transported north for medical treatment. Lovejoy was buried in a family plot at Byler Cemetery in Coatsburg, Illinois, and in the 1862 Proceedings of the Grand Lodge of Illinois he was memorialized as a worthy brother. Collection of the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum and Library, MA 007. A Note From The Secretary The time has come to write my first article for the Valley of New Castle Clipper. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our previous Secretary of the Valley of New Castle for his over 20-year commitment to the Valley Office and the Brethren. Without his leadership and commitment to the Valley of New Castle, it would not be what it is today. Without his help and guidance, my start here would have been much more difficult. I would like to thank everyone for coming to the Stated Meeting and Election on 03/15/2017. Now, the time has come for me to pick up where Ill. Howard E. Glovier, 33, MSA, left off. My first official day of work is April 01, 2017, yes, the Spring Reunion. Nothing like starting off with a bang. We have the day filled with live cast degrees, and had 7 new members join the Valley of New Castle. On March 03, 2017, we had our annual Stag Fish Fry with approximately 200 members and approximately 50 guests in attendance. Our guest speaker for the evening was John L. Haigh, Sr. and he was very entertaining and informative. In the near future, we will be updating our website and will be improving our communication among the Brethren and the Valley Office. If you could please keep us updated with any changes to your address, , phone numbers, etc., it would be helpful for us moving forward. We would like to implement a Digital Clipper and get away from as much mailing due to the time and expense involved in producing and mailing them. If you would like the electronic option, please let us know and we will take you off the mailing list and put you on the digital list. If you like the paper copy, it will still be mailed to you. This is currently your choice. With the savings from regular mail to digital mail, we can use that to help with the website upgrade and maintenance costs. In closing, I hope I will always be attentive to your needs, and I will strive to leave the Valley of New Castle even better than it is today. Sincerely and fraternally, Randall L. Connell, 32 Secretary of the Valley of New Castle STATED MEETINGS June 21, :30pm East Lodge Room Special Guest Ron Ungst Dinner will be served. $10.00 each. 4 Page 4 Page 9 Marlowe s Musings as we look to a NEW YEAR for The Valley of New Castle, I reflect on an old adage of our Brother Benjamin Franklin s thought at the Continental Congress meeting. Is the sun rising or setting? I see the efforts we are making in the planning to move the Valley forward. I see a rising sun. The members of our recent Spring Class and our very successful Fall Class, appear to be at the mindset of Join The Team and be involved. I feel secure in the knowledge that we are going to get our Valley progressing. So, our challenge is to make the next class as successful. The Time Is Now for us to respond and continue to Build Our House. Look to your new Blue Lodge Members and ask to Share the Light. Let them know all about The Scottish Rite. Fraternally, W. Thomas Marlowe, Jr., 33 1st Lieutenant Have you moved recently? We are trying to stay on top of address changes, changes, and phone numbers. Please try to keep the Valley office updated. If you are going south for the winter, and moving back home in spring, the office can put both your summer & winter address in the membership system so you can receive the Valley Clipper and any other correspondence from the Valley. Over the last couple of years, the Almoner s committee has been trying to contact everyone by phone and/or by . Unfortunately, we have discovered that MOST of the phone numbers and addresses we have are no longer in service. If you would or mail the Valley Office with your correct phone number and/or e- mail, we will be able to contact you in the future. We will not give your information out nor will we call you to solicit. We started calling members wishing them a Happy Birthday. Please send an to the Valley Office at the following: secretary033@yahoo.com with this information.
