WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE WE DOING? In the United Church of Christ, where there are three people gathered there will be four opinions.

Among church folk at Calvary, there are those who prefer old time gospel music, while others relish classical pieces.

At Calvary we like to blend things so that everyone goes home with something they liked in the service. When it comes to mission, we have a variety of perspectives.

Other s think that we should collect offerings for places around the globe.

Five time a year we collect offerings for foreign work as well as work in the United States.

Still other offering go to training young seminary students who wish to fulfil a call to ordained ministry.

When people say, why are we sending offerings to strange places, the answer is, that s what we do to fulfill the message of Christ.

2 WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE WE DOING? In the United Church of Christ, where there are three people gathered there will be four opinions. We are a diverse breed of Christians who pride ourselves for our wide diversity. There are no tests of membership. There is no wrong way to practice our faith. Among church folk at Calvary, there are those who prefer old time gospel music, while others relish classical pieces. Then there are the contemporary music people and also the traditional hymns group. At Calvary we like to blend things so that everyone goes home with something they liked in the service. When it comes to mission, we have a variety of perspectives. I hear some say, Charity begins at home, which I interpret to mean we should do mission work in close proximity to the local church. Other s think that we should collect offerings for places around the globe. We used to call it foreign missions, where missionaries would visit the local church and show slides of their work overseas. The truth is, we do both. Five time a year we collect offerings for foreign work as well as work in the United States. Some offerings are received for disaster relief in the case of floods, earthquakes and tornados. Still other offering go to training young seminary students who wish to fulfil a call to ordained ministry. Trying to pigeonhole the church s mission is like saying a parent only needs to care for one of their five children. It must be spread out. When people say, why are we sending offerings to strange places, the answer is, that s what we do to fulfill the message of Christ. In other words, the church cannot be a navel gazing mission doing it s work only at home. On the other hand, a church cannot focus only on far away mission at the expense of caring for souls at home. It s the complete mission to fulfill Christ s command to go into the world an proclaim the Gospel in word and deed to every part of Creation. (Matthew 28:19-20) Finally, none of our offerings go to fund left wing extremist groups, nor do they go to right wing fanatics. None of the UCC offerings go to support groups based on sexuality or political candidates. And finally 98% of your giving goes directly to the people that need it. That means administrative costs are only 2% of your contributions. What in the world are we doing? Lots! Your pastor in Christ s mission to the whole world. Pastor Gary Proietti 2

One of our confirmands from last year, Emma Lybarger, received the Archie Griffin Award as well as membership in the Honor Roll, the Presidential Excellence Award and was elected to Student Council. Way to go, Emma! Summer solstice June 20 'Solstice' means 'sun-stopping'. The point on the horizon where the sun appears to rise and set, stops and reverses direction after this day. On the solstice, the sun does not rise precisely in the east, but rises to the north of east and sets to the north of west, meaning it's visible in the sky for a longer period of time. Although the June solstice marks the first day of astronomical summer, it's more common to use meteorological definitions of seasons, making the solstice midsummer or midwinter. However, do not forget that Calvary is still operating through the summer and into the fall. Summer services will be more casual, Kid s Club will be offered every Sunday and we will continue to service our community with a VBS program. Please remember that your weekly, bi-weekly or monthly financial commitments are needed from June - August. Yes---it s time to relax, but not to forget your church. The Stewardship Team THE MIND OF CHILDREN A first grade schoolteacher presented each child in her classroom the first half of a well-known proverb and asked them to come up with the remainder of the verse. Building and Grounds NEWS FROM THE LARGER CHURCH KATY SMITH PASTOR GARY On May 18th, Katy Smith and Pastor Gary Proietti attended a Northwest Association Planning meeting in Tiffin, OH. There they met in various groups to plan for activities for the larger manifestation of the church. Once there, Katy was appointed chairperson of the Witness and Proclamation Team, and Pastor Gary became secretary of the Stewardship and Caring team. This will be part of Calvary s participation in the Association s ministry. The Witness and Proclamation team has oversight of worship planning for inter-church gatherings, justice and peace issues and mission, education and financial support to our churches. The Stewardship and Caring team deals with local church communication, sharing resources among our churches, and stewardship education for local churches. 7

8 MISSIONS2016 MISSION TRIP TO WASHINGTON UCC IN CINCINNATI THE BOOGEY MAN IN OUR BACK POCKET Jesse Weinberger, recent speaker and author of the book, There is a Boogeyman in Our Midst and He s in Your Child s Back Pocket, recently spoke to parents at two local schools about what parents can do to protect our children from internet predators and imposters that lure our children into unsafe and dangerous situations. How does one know whether the person behind the screen is for real or only wearing a mask to cover up who they really are? Do they imitate leaders who appear strong, but have hidden agendas behind what they pretend to be? How does a person figure out what is true vs. false? When someone says, I cannot believe you did that. Do they mean they don t believe what you said you did (whether good or bad)? Or they are in awe of what you did when you seem like just an average person? How do you tell who a person sitting in the pew next to you really is without getting to know them over a period of time. To quote a sixties song: I can do better than you can! No, you can t. Yes, I can. Do we really need to be better, or do each of us have skills that we can use to better the lives of both of us and the wider faith community by working together. Do we know what hidden talent lives within another person? Do we criticize and look for faults or do we encourage them to participate and learn new or hidden skills? To know the real person, you need to get to know them. This June 5th a group from Calvary will go to Washington UCC to take part in a mission trip. Their mission program is an eight week summer session for inner city children. Mission teams from congregations all over the country come and take up residency in the dormitories across the street from the church. Once there, the teams work with children during the day while others help with repairs and cleaning of the building. We have eight people going this year. Carol Lantz, Mary Jane Bays, Harley Barker, Tyler Albright, Gary Blum, Bob Leiss, Jayne Barker and Gary Proietti. Please help support this endeavor to be a part of Christ s mission in the world. Pray for us as we depart on Sunday, June 5th. Your Mission Team Just because they look old, they have learned survival skills over their lifetime. That young person may seem unruly and rebellious, but it may be just part of growing up to be a leader. Earlier in the history of the church, some women decided to save pennies to help others by collecting pennies for developing mission work for the church. One person may not be able to accomplish a lot. By working together, sharing talent and loose coins, more could be accomplished. Children are our future. As adults, we can set an example for them by not arguing about which mission to give to or withholding any mission at all. By listening to our hearts, or by listening to the stirring of the HOLY SPIRIT within us we can discern (decide) for ourselves how to uplift one another up to higher ground by contributing to the whole mission of the church of Jesus Christ by giving as we are able according to our individual abilities.
