2 COME, HOLY SPIRIT! It was a warm Pentecost Sunday in my country church in Hiram, Ohio. The building wasn't air conditioned so all the sanctuary windows were wide open. The sermon was over and the congregation began to sing the dedication hymn when a chimney swift came flying into the room. The church was almost full to capacity so the balcony was filled with worshippers. The little bird began barnstorming the balcony crowd so they would be forced to duck every time it flew up there. Back and forth the bird swooped up to the organ pipes and over the balcony. After the hymn was sung, the swift settled down on a chandelier. We had communion and the bird seemed content to rest on the ceiling light. The organist then pulled out all the stops and began to blast the pipes which, in turn, frightened the bird and again, it began its flight of terror on the balcony crowd. No one was paying attention to what was going on in the service, since every eye was on the blasted bird, so I worked it into the benediction saying something about the bird as a sign of the Holy Spirit and how we must let the Spirit out of the church and into the world. The next day, the church organist came into my office to tell me something was wrong with one of the organ keys. She played a lower octave scale and when she got to the D, a raspberry sound emerged from that pipe. Upon closer inspection I noticed something black hanging out of the mouth of the pipe. You guessed it. It was a wing of the chimney swift flapping obscenely when the note was depressed. That s when I turned to the organist and said, Don t tell anyone we killed the Holy Spirit. Paul, the apostle, writes in I Thessalonians 5 to rejoice, pray, give thanks, and do not quench the Spirit. The word for quench here is the Greek word sbennumi which means to extinguish, suppress or thwart. So how do we quench the Spirit? There are several ways to thwart the working of God in today s world. One is to pray selfishly for things we want and not things we need. Ephesians 6:18 reads, Praying always in the Spirit. This means before we pray we should seek the mind of God to do the will of God in our lives. Praying against what God wants is an exercise in futility. Sometime contention and strife in the congregation can surely hamper the work of God among us. We are admonished to get along with each other and work through our differences so that much can be accomplished in Christ s name. When the Spirit resides within us, without us and through us, we work in unity and harmony to accomplish the will of Christ. And they will know we are Christians by our love. Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land, he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn t the anniversary of any particular battle. 6

8 MISSIONS2016 MISSION TRIP TO WASHINGTON UCC IN CINCINNATI This June 5th a group from Calvary will go to Washing UCC to take part in a mission trip. According to history, a group from the Ladies Aid Society formed a new church in It was the Washington Evangelical and Reformed Church which later became part of the United Church of Christ. In the 1970s, most of the members moved to the suburbs and those who were left were low income families. The church leaders decided to keep the church building and turn it into a worshipping mission church, helping to improve the lives of the neighborhood. THANK YOU After Eileen and Bob Parr delivered one of our quilts to Mother Emmanuel AME church in Charleston, SC., this is the response we got. I would like to extend my deepest thanks and appreciation for your generous gift. It is gratifying to know our church family has your support. I am humbled by the thoughtfulness of the American people and honored to serve as pastor of Mother Emanuel. If we join together in common purpose, I am confident that we will solve the great challenge of our time. The Rev. Betty D. Clark STRENGTHEN THE CHURCH OFFER- One mission program is an eight week summer session for inner city children. Mission teams from congregations all over the country come and take up residency in the dormitories across the street from the church. Once there, the teams work with children during the day while others help with repairs and cleaning of the building. A small group from Calvary UCC went last year and experienced firsthand the needs of impoverished children. The teams help with education, healthy meals, and positive role modelling for these kids. Our own Harley Barker has initiated a Socks in a Box ministry. Once in Cincinnati the teams will pass out crew socks to the homeless in the city park. We will also pass out box lunches to people in the area. Other boxes are located at the Crestline American Legion, Calvary UCC and the Advocate. Your Mission Team 8

10 CONSISTORY HIGHLIGHTS Finance Committee A report was submitted. The receipts currently cover expenses. Stewardship Committee Word is coming about a Fall Stewardship Emphasis Building and Grounds Concrete work on sidewalk is being completed. Mower has been serviced. Sign up sheet is on the bulletin board. Please sign up. Evangelism Caring for the pew pads and literature in the racks. Christian Education/ Lay Life Making poles and streamers for children to march on Pentecost Sunday. Children s Day is May 22 followed by a picnic at Kelly Park. The theme for Vacation Bible School is Cave Quest and Katy Smith is in charge. Summer camp information has been distributed. Pastoral Relations Dennis Rismiller asked the Elders to take care to update the membership rolls. Music/Worship Don Graf is preparing communion for the Annual Gathering and May 1 worship. Pentecost is May 15. Extra candles Missions Meals on Wheels is being scheduled for May. Strengthen the Church offering will be received on May 15.
