1 Needle News Colorado Chapter, EGA June 2013 ** A Note from Our President Hello Everyone, You should have received a separate regarding our visit to the Denver Art Museum. I hope that you all reply promptly so that Caela has enough time to make the proper arrangements. A very tall "tip of the hat "to Caela for all her efforts in making these arrangements. I have no doubt that it will be a very interesting and informative visit for us. Some of us are presently attending the RMR Seminar in Grand Junction. It sounds like it should be fun. I will let you know how my counting goes as I am taking the Blackwork class. Wish me luck! With all that meticulous counting, I am not sure I can keep up. I am certain that I may well be crosseyed when I return! See you at the DAM. Henri This Month s Program: SPUN: Adventures in Textiles The museum-wide celebration, SPUN: Adventures in Textiles, commemorates the opening of the DAM textile art galleries and Thread Studio. In fact, DAM deemed the return (expansion) of textile art prominence, including stitching and embellishment done with an eyed needle, so significant, all of the museum s departments have met the challenge of presenting textile-related exhibitions. And Cover Story, located in the new textile art galleries, is most certainly the star of the show! We have scheduled a special docent-led tour of Cover Story beginning at 10:00 am. At the conclusion of our tour, Avenir Foundation Curator of Textile Art, Alice Zrebiec, will greet us, answer our questions, and perhaps provide a preview of the department s future plans. We encourage you to spend time in the thread studio (it is amazing!) and to take a closer look at the details of your favorite items on display in the 6th floor textile art galleries. We will reserve tables for lunch at Palettes. Be sure to plan on spending a bit more time at the DAM after lunch. We guarantee you will not want to miss the related and truly astounding exhibition, Red, White, & Bold: Masterworks of Navajo Design, or the Quilt Studio (both in the Hamilton Building). We will offer tips on other SPUN highlights depending on your time and your remaining stamina. There is no added ticket cost beyond regular admission to the museum! 1 P a g e N e e d l e N e w s J u n e
2 Admission is $8.00 (seniors age 65) or $10.00 (adults) or free for DAM members. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED BY 6:00 PM, MONDAY, JUNE 17! Call or Caela Tyler ( is definitely preferred!) Be sure to specify your admission status (adult, senior, or member) and whether you plan to join us for lunch. We plan to check you in before we enter the museum since the doors will not be unlocked until 10:00 AM. Please have CASH (correct change) or your membership card. You will find a very informative recap of the textile collection s history and prime holdings at this link: To see the entire article, click on View More If you do not wish to drive to the museum, we urge you to be pro-active: we recommend calling people you know to arrange car-pooling. IMPORTANT NOTICE: After Caela's meeting with Denver Art Museum personnel, it appears that our donation will be far more useful to the DAM if we do not limit its use to education. We will need to amend the vote taken at our last meeting to include education, conservation, and exhibitions as community education. Thank you for your support. Henri Around the Region by Vivian Wilson Our RMR Lucky Ladies Seminar is about to begin! The Executive Board will be meeting on Wednesday evening, June 12, followed on Thursday by the Region Meeting beginning at 8:30AM. All Region members are invited to attend, so we hope several of you will arrive in time to do so. If you have hat and gloves, by all means bring them to Seminar! And of course, we re all looking forward to fun classes and stitching time on Friday and Saturday, as well as all the other planned activities. Kathy Melville, our Region Director, has indicated that three major items for discussion at the Region meeting will be: 1. Seminar profits. The Finance Committee will be reporting their suggestions for spending the profits from Seminar 2012, having considered the input from our Region s chapters as well as individual Region members. They also will be making other suggestions concerning the Treasurer position and the best software to manage the books. 2. The Region website. Vicki Shigley has voluntarily taken on this task in the past (and many thanks to Vicki for having done so!!), but she is now ready to have someone else do this job. The discussion on a new webmaster will revolve around whether a Region member will follow in Vicki s footsteps or whether the Region will contract with a company to do the job of keeping the website up-to-date. 3. Ideas for Seminar No chapter(s) have volunteered to host a Region seminar in 2015, so Kathy and incoming Region Director, Janice Wood, expect to present several ideas at the meeting. Both Durango and Colorado Springs have been suggested as possible locations. After the Grand Junction, I will have more info. on the outcome of the above discussion items, as well as an update on the next Region-sponsored GCC. 2 P a g e N e e d l e N e w s J u n e

Also, keep informed on the region website, Scholarships Available Would you like to go to a seminar or take a class to further your skills in the needle arts but feel you just can t afford the entire cost? Help is at hand! Money is available to Colorado Chapter members to give them a boost, although financial need is NOT a requirement. How? Apply for a Scholarship! Scholarships may be applied to cover the partial or full cost of a class, workshop, seminar, correspondence course (group leaders note!) or other approved activity in the amount requested, dependent upon availability of funds, number of applicants, and the approval of the scholarship committee. Funds do not cover kit fees and/or transportation. There are a few simple rules regarding the use of the funds, including an agreement to share your experience supported by your scholarship. Some ways to share, among others include: give a talk or presentation at the chapter meeting as a program, conduct a Back to Basics program using information from the class, serve as a leader in a future group correspondence course, support and aid in future fundraising activities for the scholarship fund, write an article for any of the newsletters or EGA publications.
