To be elected as Master of Jackson Lodge is something I will always treasure. I first want to give thanks and honor to all my predecessors who have gone this way before me. I really have some big shoes to fill. I was Master of Highpoint Lodge #755 in Columbus three different times, but it will never get you ready for the vastness of this upcoming year. Before I talk about the things coming up in 2014, I first want to look back on We had good times and some bad times. We traveled to San Antonio, Texas and had a great week of fellowship. We had lots of successful degree work. We had great outreach to our community with help and assistance. Unfortunately, we lost some brothers who were taken from us death. We also had tragedy with the automobile accident of Mike & Jean Dutton, which eventually took Jean's life. I just hope and pray that in 2014 it will be less tragic. Now what do we have to look forward to in 2014? One of my goals is to see more Masonic Education. I feel you can never 1

have enough of that! I would like to see more of our Jackson Lodge Bothers traveling to other lodges and supporting them when they have degree nights. We will have a Masters Trip in June and we will be traveling to Kentucky for an overnight trip for degree work in August. I haven't forgotten the ladies of our lodge, they will be traveling on a day trip in the fall as well as going to the Der Dinner Playhouse. I want to stress one thing, if any brother wants to donate lodge funds to any organization please bring it to the finance committee first. In the past, sometimes brothers would just make a motion to donate money without going through finance committee first. This needs to change! So in closing let s have a successful 2014 year, but the only way it will happen is if you are part of it! Fraternally, WM Jon D. Lanier, PM From the Secretary William J. Reagin, PM, Sec Brethren, as we begin the New Year I begin with the same old message: Dues are delinquent, scholarships applications must be post marked March 1. I would like to welcome our new members from Bayless #216 and encourage them to join us at our stated meetings and various activities. I have not had the opportunity to add your names to the TrestleBoard list so I encourage you to visit our website (see below) for upcoming activities at Jackson Lodge. I thank Larry Lewis and Steve Gillespie for their help with the transition and our brethren will be receiving a new dues card from Jackson Lodge. I apologize for being so slow getting my part of the consolidation 2 completed but unfortunately my other speed is even slower. Fraternally and Sincerely,, PM From the West Jon P. Sage, SW Masonic Wages First of all, I would like to thank you all for the trust you have merited in me, and the honor bestowed in allowing me to sit in the West during the coming year at Jackson Lodge #146. I will do my level best to serve the Lodge in a manner that will only enhance our presence in our community, and in the process, foster an atmosphere conducive to making all men, better men, through the Arts of our gentle Craft. As the opening of the Lodge goes, the duty of the Senior Warden is pay the Craft their wages, if ought be due I can think of no other wages that I would prefer to receive than Masonic Wages! Gold, silver, folding dollar bills, are all things of value. However, these, at some point, are paid out, and then spent. As is the natural course of money, it is immensely easy to spend, but then we notice, to save and replenish our money takes a considerably longer period of time. At times, it seems as though we might never fully recoup the original amount possessed. The difference between those worldly riches, and Masonic treasures, is that Masonic wages, once earned, NEVER decrease. No matter how fast we try to spend our wages as Masons, we find that they are, quite aptly, only re invested towards the advancement of other Masons, who in like manner, spend and re invest them again. The wages of a Mason can NEVER be depleted, frankly, because

Masonry exists from time Immemorial, and then also, because those wages are not physical in nature. Indeed, the speculative wages of a Mason are of a spiritual sort, as our Masonic Charity knows no bounds; neither do the wages which comprise that Charity. What a joy! We witness this at the raising of every Master Mason. We hear the words, you will get out of Masonry what you put into it. To the newly raised Mason, this means little at the time. However, as months and then years pass, the meaning becomes evident. We put in Work, and receive, as payment, wages; with those wages going as a down payment for the continuance of our Craft and Ourselves. Fraternally, Jon P. Sage, SW From the South, JW Brethren, as I write this, we are closing out the year for Lodge. My year as Senior Deacon has been rewarding and I've had the privilege of serving at the will and pleasure of WM Mike Dutton, who signed my petition and was Senior Deacon when I was initiated only 3 years ago. He told me once that this was "The best seat in the house", and I would agree. The Senior Deacon is also kept busy learning ritual and degree work... But thankfully I've had a lot of help and it has been much appreciated! And I know that Brother Gale Barid will do an excellent job as our new Senior Deacon. Thank you for your support in electing me as JW for '14. I only hope I can do as well as Bro Sage. Also, congrats to all my fellow officers. Now that my year as Senior Deacon has ended, my name joins my predecessors etched upon the back of the Square, and I'm honored. But, it made me think about the symbolism of the Square. That we are to "Square our Actions". To put more simply, to practice The Golden Rule. When we treat others with love and respect, they will want to do the same. It's part of our lessons as an Entered Apprentice, and that we should be ever mindful of our interactions with our fellow man. It seems our world today could use more people practicing just that. OES News Kay Schwade, Worthy Matron Denver Gray, Worthy Patron As a new year approaches, it is appropriate to take a minute to reflect on what we have accomplished in the past twelve months both as a Chapter of Eastern Star and as individuals. This is the time of the year that we should look back and be grateful for all the blessings given to us from our Heavenly Father. It is also a time to look back and ask ourselves if we gave of ourselves in a manner that would be pleasing to Him. At our December meeting, we collected hats, gloves, scarves, undergarments and socks to give to the local clothing center. Thanks to all of you that have donated. For those who due to the weather opted to stay in on that snowy evening, Denver & I extended the project of collecting hats, gloves, scarves, undergarments and socks to give those who could not attend the December meeting an opportunity to share in this venture. So, for those who could not attend in December or those who would just like to donate additional items, we will have a box in the dining room for donations at our January 2, 2014 meeting. A final thought for May the Lord keep you in his hand and never close his fist too tight on you. And may the face of every good news and the back of every bad news be toward us in the New Year. Happy New Year! Kay Schwade, WM Denver Gray, WP 4

* * * * * * * * * Rainbow News Jadyn Ruble, Worthy Advisor Loretta Riehl, Mother Advisor Hello, We hope all of you are staying warm this winter. The Rainbow girls had a lot of fun at their Christmas party lock in. They baked pizza and cookies and decorated the cookies. After playing games they watched movies. A great time was had all and little sleep. Our Installation of officers will be January 18th, at 2:00pm. We hope you can come. Happy new year to you and yours. Rainbow love, Jadyn Ruble, W.A. Loretta Riehl, M.A. From the Craft Brothers, this is a new section in our TrestleBoard to enable Brethren to contribute articles, stories and items of interest each month. If you submit an article it will appear in this section. Submit your articles to the Editor at stephenp1510@gmail.com Articles of Masonic Interest from Stephen P. Kroman, PM Editor What s your answer? Ladies of the Lodge Darlene Oathout, Pres Nancy Byrns, Sec Regrettable, our December meeting was cancelled due to the bad weather. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 8, All Ladies associated with the Lodge are invited to join us. The meal will be a pitch in with ham sandwiches and drinks being provided. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. Nancy Byrns, Secretary A Mason is sometimes asked a friend, a neighbor, or a business associate, What do the Masons do? The question may be worded more generally, What are the Masons? In either case, the Brother is challenged the realization that there is no simple answer which he can rattle off from the top of his head, because the questioner is really asking him for a comprehensive explanation about what organized Freemasonry is, what its principles and purposes are, what programs it is engaged in, how it carries them out, and what satisfactions the individual Mason derives from his Masonic membership. 5

Some of these considerations arouse the fraternal doubt that you can t tell that, or that s secret, so that the Brother s reply is marked hesitation or reluctance to explain. Puzzled the difficulty of knowing what facets of the vast subject of Freemasonry the questioner is really inquiring about, the Mason just doesn t know where to begin, and too often may avoid a simple statement of facts. He isn t sure of what to say. First of all, he will determine to give a Masonic answer, one which asserts the real nature of the Fraternity as a spiritual force, as a way of life which seeks to improve men morally and spiritually, associating with other idealistic men who want to improve the quality of life around them means of a brotherhood which emphasizes the Fatherhood of God In an age which derides ideals, absolutes, the concepts of law and order, and advocates relativism instead of standards of excellence, which angrily demands rights instead of responsibility, and which preaches a nihilistic doctrine of individualism (doing your own thing), Masons find it difficult to explain the Fraternity s idealism and its charitable and educational purposes. But it must be done. A Mason must give a Masonic answer to the question, What are the Masons. There is so much that a Mason can tell about his beloved Fraternity. But the way in which he tells it is more important than what he tells. When a Mason is conscious and proud of the moral and spiritual achievements he has made through Masonry, when he has been inspired to display the beauties of friendship, morality, and brotherly love, when he realizes that his own personal life is the most important evidence he can give to show what a Mason is, he usually finds it very easy to talk about the Fraternity to his non Masonic friends. When he knows that his lodge is a spiritual 6 force, when it is learning and teaching its members the universal ideals of the Craft, when it is actively promoting charitable programs and pursuing truth, he will tell what Freemasonry is with conviction and enthusiasm. When he is asked the question he must then decide on how much or how little to say. A brief but adequate reply is advised, for if the questioner is not satisfied, he will undoubtedly ask for further information. The following answer is only a suggestion: Masons are men who voluntarily asked to join a lodge. They were accepted because they were good men who believe in God and hold high ethical and moral ideals. They go to meetings which they call the lodge, in order to learn and to teach what friendship, morality, and truth really involve, and to practice on a small scale the reality of brotherhood. They also have meetings open to their wives, children, and friends where they promote an understanding of the serious nature of the Fraternity entertainment and sociability. Practical programs for charity and relief are planned and executed. The special kinship they feel for each other as a brotherhood is their deepest satisfaction. From The Grand Lodge of the state of Louisiana, excerpt from What s Your Answer?
