3 Welcome Letter On behalf of the Bolingbrook Juneteenth Board and Committee Members, I welcome you to the 3rd Annual Juneteenth Community Festival! First, I am thrilled to announce that BBJuneteenth is officially a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization. This new status will allow us to expand our outreach throughout the Community as we continue to support and broaden our core goals and develop new programs and/or offerings through newly formed partnerships with local Businesses. Operating with a newly elected Board and restructured Committees, we have worked effortlessly to plan this year's event. An event which extends a platform for all people, regardless of race or ethnic heritage, to reflect on 152 years of progress by African Americans. So, we welcome you to indulge in the activities, entertainment and information made available for this joyous, multicultural celebration! Second and most importantly, at the heart of the Juneteenth is pure fun! The day is meant for family, friends, fellowship and looking to the future which is succinctly encapsulated in the event theme, Coming Together Moving Forward. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said: "We may have come on different ships, but we re in the same boat now. In the spirit of Dr. King s quote, we encourage all people to join in the grassroots Juneteenth celebration; supporting and recognizing African Americans who have and continue to play a positive role in building a strong sense of community identity, individuality and worth! 2017 Board / Committee Members Lawrence Cooper President / Founder Tamera Smith APN, FPN-BC Vice President Samantha Cooper Treasurer Rowsha LaBranche Secretary Darren Cornelious Board Member Raquel Mitchell, Legislative Outreach Toni Greathouse Community Content Curator Kym Owens Coordinator, Children & Senior Area Tom Fink Event Security Community! 5 Junteenth History Summarily, Juneteenth is the equivalent of Independence Day for African Americans and is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. It was on June 19 th in 1865, that Union soldiers (led by Major General Gordon Granger) traveled to Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note, the news was delivered almost three years after President Lincoln s official Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, Regrettably, the Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on Texans due to the small number of Union troops willing to enforce the Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865 and the arrival of General Granger s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance. Juneteenth celebrations have been held across the United States since June 19 th of 1865 in recognition of this momentous occasion. On the 150 th Anniversary of the Juneteenth, it is indeed a great honor to be able to launch the first annual Juneteenth Festival in Bolingbrook, Illinois as the Village simultaneously recognizes its 50 th birthday! Submitted by Toni Greathouse Thank you for joining us for the 3 rd Annual Bolingbrook Juneteenth Celebration!
