STORY: Joshua, the Israelites and their Witness Rock Please Read Joshua 24:24-28 FOCUS FOR TEACHERS: While we re teaching the kiddos in a very simple way to follow God with intentionality, I was struck by it s deep implications in my own life. God is gracious and good. He knows the importance of sign posts along the way, reminding us of whose we are and therefore, who we serve (or live for). American culture lives fast and furious. It s easy to get swept up into the hustle and bustle and before we know it a day or two or even a week has passed and we missed living those moments fully aware and fully engaged in the many Godopportunities we zoomed right by. Markers, sign posts along the way. These are the things that remind us to take notice, to stay in step with our good God as HE leads, HE guides and then we experience life in it s fullest and deepest fashion. Then we become true image bearers reflecting our King into this world with the things we say and do. Fully alive, fully aware of a life lived in Him. If nothing exciting is going on, why would they WANT to come in? Arrive early and set it up for them! STUDENT WORKER ACTIVITY CARDs #1 Decorate our Witness Rocks : use paint and/or stickers to decorate your rocks. Materials Provided In Your Teacher Tub: rocks, stickers, paint, paint brush KIDS AT THE WALL!! (one person is setting up chairs, facing the wall, one chair per person in the room. This person will direct the children/adults/helpers to the appropriate chairs) Sing Good Morning God! Good Morning God, this is your day, I am your child, show me your way!!! 1-2 This is True 1-2 (2 fingers), This is True (nod head yes), God loves me (point), and God loves you & you & you & you & you (point)! God is So Big God is so big (tippy toes, stretch hands up), We are so small (crouch), But God cares for You & Me (point), He loves us all! (hug self) Transition: HAVE YOUR KIDS MARCH AROUND THE ROOM, ENDING AT THE STORY CIRCLE. FOLLOWING YOU, THEIR LEADER, AS YOU SING: O IS FOR OBEY (I changed the lyrics slightly to go with today s Witness Rock Sunday) O IS FOR OBEY, O IS FOR OBEY, I PROMISE TO OBEY YOU GOD, O IS FOR OBEY

2 TODAY S BIBLE STORY!! BEGIN YOUR STORY THE SAME WAY EVERY WEEK!! Recite the story with your Bible on your lap. S (shake, get the wiggles out) SAY THIS POEM AND HAVE THE KIDS LEARN TO SAY IT TOO!! GOD WROTE THE BIBLE (BIBLE HANDS), AND EVERY WORD IS TRUE (SHAKE YOUR HEAD) GOD WROTE IT ESPECIALLY FOR ME (POINT TO YOU) AND FOR YOU (POINT TO KIDS) WHEN YOU ARE QUIET (FINGER BY MOUTH) AND LISTEN (HANDS BY EARS) YOU LL SEE (POINT TO EYES) HOW VERY MUCH GOD (POINT TO GOD) LOVES YOU & YOU & YOU & YOU & YOU (POINT ) & LOVES ME (HUG) T (tell them what you expect set the limits) time for you to listen and me to speak, zip lips, open ears, buckle your seat belt! God helps us listen when we ask for help! O (offer this time to God in prayer) pray for them to listen and God to help you tell the story. R (recite the story) MATERIALS IN YOUR BIN: pics from previous lessons Y (Yes! Check understanding with the questions below!) BOYS AND GIRLS, TODAY IS ANOTHER STORY ABOUT JOSHUA AND THE ISRAELITES! IT WAT ALMOST TIME FOR THE ISRAELITES TO LIVE IN THE GOOD, NEW LAND GOD GAVE TO THEM. BUT FIRST, JOSHUA ASKED THE ISREALITES THREE QUESTIONS! FIRST JOSHUA ASKED THEM, ISRAELITES, WHEN YOU RE LIVING IN THIS NEW, GOOD LAND THAT GOD GAVE YOU, WHO ARE YOU GOING TO FOLLOW? THE ISRAELITES ANSWERED, GOD, WE CHOOSE TO FOLLOW GOD. NEXT JOSHUA ASKED THEM, ISRAELITES, WILL YOU REMEMBER TO REPENT? DO YOU REMEMBER WHAT THAT MEANS BOYS & GIRLS? STOP DOING WRONG THINGS, TURN TO GOD AND GO DO RIGHT THINGS. THE ISRAELITES ANSWERED, YES, JOSHUA, WE WILL REPENT WE WILL STOP DOING WRONG THINGS, TURN AND GO FOLLOW GOD. JOSHUA HAD ONE LAST MORE. HE SAID, ISRAELITES, WILL YOU MAKE A PROMISE TO GOD TO ALWAYS FOLLOW & OBEY GOD? THE ISRAELITES ANSWERED, YES, JOSHUA! TODAY WE PROMISE GOD THAT WE WILL ONLY FOLLOW & OBEY GOD! THEN JOSHUA SAID, I WANT TO HELP YOU ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR PROMISE! I HAVE AN IDEA! THIS WILL HELP YOU JOSHUA FOUND A GREAT BIG ROCK AND PUT IT WHERE EVERYONE COULD SEE IT AND TOLD THE PEOPLE, HERE IS A GREAT BIG ROCK! IT WILL BE A GREAT BIG REMINDER FOR YOU! EVERY TIME YOU LOOK AT THIS ROCK REMEMBER YOUR PROMISE TO GOD TO ALWAYS FOLLOW AND OBEY HIM. THE ISRAELITES WERE SO HAPPY THAT JOSHUA SET UP A GREAT BIG ROCK TO HELP THEM REMEMBER. THEY SAID, EVERY TIME WE LOOK AT THIS ROCK WE WILL REMEMBER OUR PROMISE TO GOD. WE PROMISE GOD THAT WE WILL ALWAYS OBEY HIM. BOYS AND GIRLS, I WANT TO MAKE A PROMISE TO GOD TOO, DON T YOU! TOGETHER LET S SAY TO GOD, GOD, WE PROMISE TO OBEY YOU. READY? SAY IT WITH ME: GOD, WE PROMISE TO OBEY YOU. THAT WAS GREAT! LET S SAY IT AGAIN, READY? GOD, WE PROMISE TO OBEY YOU. WE DECORATED OUR OWN ROCKS EARLIER AND EVERYONE GETS TO TAKE THEIR ROCK HOME WITH THEM TODAY. PUT IT ON YOUR DRESSER IN YOUR ROOM. LOOK AT YOUR ROCK EVERY DAY. AND EVERY DAY SAY OUT LOUD TO GOD: GOD, I PROMISE TO OBEY YOU. OUR BIG IDEA IS I PROMISE TO OBEY YOU GOD TODAY S RESPONSE: Model open hands on lap and say, God is amazing and loves us so much. Let s sit quietly for a little bit and listen as God tells us how much He loves us. You can tell Him, God I promise to obey you. SIT STILL FOR 10 SECONDS. Questions to check for understanding: CALL CHILD TO COME GET A HUG OR HIGH-FIVE! What book did our true stories come from today? THE BIBLE Who asked the Israelites three questions? Their leader, Joshua Who did the Israelites say they would follow? GOD Who did Joshua want to remember to repent? The Israelites What s repent? (hold up 3 fingers) Stop Turn Go Who did the Israelites make a promise to? GOD What did Joshua set up for the Israelites to look at so they would remember their promise to God? Big Rock Who do we promise to obey? God What s our Big Idea? I promise to obey you God Transition to Worship Time : Teacher leading the kids to worship time be at the door with rings lined up on the floor. Teacher sitting with children in the story circle tap one child at a time on their shoulder with a puppet. When the puppet taps a child s shoulder they may get up to hold a ring.

3 SNACK & PRAY PRAY (sing to the tune of The more we get together: We love to eat together.and give thanks to God. ) QUESTION: We have a rock to take home. Every time you look at it remember to say, I promise to obey you God. Did you know that God made a rainbow to remember the promise He made us? What s your favorite color? CREATIVE ARTS, AFTER SNACK TIME (use free play as a last option!!) You may do any of the activities on this page, including snack, outside if it is nice out or in the hallway outside our bug rooms. If you do, please let your coordinator and Security Team know where you are going and check in when you get back. God, I Promise to Obey You coloring sheet /Parent letter let them color as you talk about the story! Make sure to point out our WITNESS ROCK SERVICE CHALLENGE to the parents on the back of today s coloring sheet!!! Materials Provided In Your bin: Coloring sheet/parent letter (delivered at Snack time) STUDENT WORKER ACTIVITY CARDs #2 Dance with rainbow streamers. Give each child a streamer. When the music starts, dance around the room with their streamer. When the music stops, freeze and shout the Big Idea: I promise to obey you, God. continue playing until the children lose interest. Opening activities (see page 1) if you did not get a chance to do them earlier.

4 ADDITIONAL SUGGESTIONS FOR CLOSING ACTIVITIES One teacher plays while one cleans up and waits for parents to arrive. Books Bubbles Ball toss Duck duck goose Ring around the rosie Follow the leader (skip, jump, hopping, touching top of your head, etc) Scarf dance to music, walk and wave scarf, freeze when the music stops Beanie Babie Toss (into your bin, use stuffed animals, tape off toe line) Musical Shape Game (Use masking tape to make a circle, triangle, & square on the floor. Play the music. When you stop it, call out a shape and have the kids run to it! Paper plate skate (Give each child a paper plate and turn on the music or sing. They can skate while it is playing but must stop when the music stops.) Popcorn (Fun, but requires that you really set the limits or it can get wildly out of control! Get a sheet 3 year old rooms have parachutes for this and cotton balls, or balls. Spread out the sheet and have the kids hold on to an edge without moving. Put the balls in the middle of the sheet. Pretend that you are making popcorn. Tell the kids that it s time to put in the oil. Ask them what else they want to put in silly stuff, like syrup, cheese, ice-cream, etc! Then tell them that you are turning on the heat!! It s getting warm start moving the sheet, slowly. Hotter go faster! Then really hot, when the popcorn is popping out of the sheet! Have the kids collect the popcorn and repeat! Sheet or parachute play. Have the kids hold the edges as above. When you call a child s name, have them run under the sheet to you. Need other adults to play this to get the sheet up high. Red Rover Have the kids stand at one wall (if you only have one adult) or in 2 lines if you have 2 adults. Call each child to come and run into your (the adult s) arms for a hug! NEW!!! MATCH GAME! HAVE KIDS MATCH PICTURES FROM CARD SETS IN RESOURCE ROOM OR MAKE YOUR OWN. Hey!! Send me YOUR favorite and I ll add it!! Don t forget to check all ID numbers!! CHALLENGE YOURSELF TO LEAVE THE ROOM READY FOR THE NEXT TEACHER! HERE S HOW: RETURN TOYS TO THEIR PROPER BINS EXPECT THE KIDS TO HELP WITH THIS PUT ALL BINS IN THE CLOSET (NOT KITCHENS OR BIG TOYS) EMPTY PITCHERS AND STORE IN CABINET CLEAR COUNTER OF EVERYTHING BUT HAND SANITIZER, KLEENEX, EVAC BAG & CD PLAYER WIPE DOWN TABLES AND COUNTERS STACK THE CHAIRS SO OUR GUYS CAN VACUUM TURN OFF THE TV, PUT DISCS IN YOUR MUSIC DRAWER RETURN YOUR BINS TO THE RESOURCE ROOM THANK YOU FOR SERVING THIS MONTH!!
