The Messenger June 2016 Senior Pastor: D. Marie Tribble Organist: Mary E. Snyder Administrative Assistant: Jessica E. Spicher Welcome to Summer! S'moresfest will be held in the Church parking lot from 6-8 PM. We are accepting donations for s'mores, i.e. marshmallows, graham crackers, chocolate bars, etc. These donations can be placed in a box in the sanctuary labeled "S'moresfest Donations." We will also be frying hamburgers and hot dogs and taking time once a month to spend time with our neighbors, friends and our Church family. There will be campfire songs, games and fun. Please join us for this FREE event and get to know someone new! We are also asking you to bring a side dish, however it is not required to attend this outreach event. The body of Christ extends beyond the 4 walls of our Church! Dates include: June 11th, July 9th, August 13th and September 10th Father s Day Service June 19th, 10:15 AM On Sunday June 19th, we will honor our Fathers and give them a special "gift." Father's Day was first celebrated in As a tradition here at First Christian Church, we typically hand out Cracker Jacks to Fathers. Why? Is it just a tradition or is there more to the story? From research to asking congregational members, we set out to find out why. Many of you know the baseball chorus, "take me out to the ball game, take me out to the crowd, buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks, I don't care if I ever get back, for it's root root root for the home team, if they don't win it's a shame, for it's 1, 2, 3 strikes you're out at the old ball game!" So, some believe that since Father's day falls during baseball season, there's an idea that father's were treated to baseball games and snacked on cracker jacks. Is it true or just another reason to have a sweet treat? I'm not sure...you can make your mind up for yourself! Rain Gutter Regatta & Picnic Noon, June 26 Come join us in the Church parking lot for an afternoon of racing handmade sail boats down a rain gutter. The idea is that you build a boat out of a pool noodle and other simple materials. Bring yourself, family, and/or friends for the race and the picnic that follows. If you would, please bring a side dish to share. We look forward to seeing you there. This event is Rain or Shine. This will also mark the end of cub scout meetings at the Church until the fall, the same time the girl scouts resume their troop meetings. Let s have some fun!

Pastor s Page/Updates Pastor s Page What makes me a Disciple of Christ? I have learned change often comes with a variety of mixed emotions. These emotions cause us to respond in two primary ways. Sometimes we stand in total excitement and anticipation of the awaiting future that is yet to be seen, that it causes us to run towards the change with open arms. Then other times the fear of the unknown will cause us to do everything within our power to reject and resist any and all changes within our lives. For many of us, Church has been the most stabile institution within our lives. For many years it has been the Church that naturally provided us with the opportunity to seek the guidance and direction from God to help us to decipher the best direction and course of action in our lives. We have all come to depend on the Church as our place of stability, mediation, and decision making for the most difficult and challenging phases of life. Every now and again, we will reach a point in our theological journeys where a major life change and transition will be experienced even within the Church. What do we do during the phases of change within our source of stability? Do we run towards them with open arms or do we do everything in our power to resist and reject? I believe the key to surviving any change is in our ability to find the appropriate balance between both of these primary initial reactions. Before we are able to whole heartedly embrace the new and unknown we must be clear on the anticipated benefit or overall expectation of the change to us personally. With this, clarity often helps us to determine our true desires, needs, and wants we believe are being threatened by the proposed change, which causes our initial reaction to reject and resist. In most cases many people whole heartedly understand the need for change, what they fear is their inability to identify themselves or the thing they have come to know to be normal after the changing phase. It is no secret to any of us, First Christian Church has been in the midst of a changing phase. To assist us through this phase, I believe there is one very simple question we all must first ask ourselves: What makes me a Disciple of Christ? The answer to this question will vary based on each individual person, however the answer will help to provide insight on your individual response to this phase of life. Over the next several months, I petition everyone to ask yourself this question to help guide you during your various decision making processes. Determining what makes you a Disciple of Christ will help you to determine proposed impact of any anticipated change we encounter. Pay close attention to your answers. Are they social, cultural, or theological? Or is your answer based on some other underlining factor? Although our answers may be different, I believe God has directly guided all of us to this place in our lives, and God will continue to guide us through these significant decision making moments as well. When you have the answer to this question, please feel free to share it with me, because I am interested in knowing, what makes you a Disciple of Christ? Pastor D. Marie Comment Box During our last board meeting, it was decided to add a comment card and box to the Welcome Table for congregational members or visitors to make reasonable comments or suggestions about, how things are going in general or what you would like to hear or see more or less of. Also, we are asking that if you are unhappy with something, we want you to be part of the solution and make suggestions on how it could be better. Thank you for your constructive opinions! They will be shared with our Pastor and Church Board. Memorial Day 2016 Thank you to those who provided pictures and the names of former FCC Members for our Memorial Day Bulletin Board. A special thank you to Frank Hughes for maintaining and providing the list of Veterans of First Christian Church that have served in all the major wars from the beginning of the 1900s. We are grateful for those that have served our Country selflessly. Take a peak at what was posted and who was honored. We have had numerous Members serve. 2

Ministry Planning Team Update/Outreach First Christian Church is involved in numerous outreach projects throughout our local community. One of the direct projects that benefit our surrounding neighbors here at First Christian Church is providing books to community members for free! This began as a Girl Scout Silver Award project. This is a world wide initiative to make reading material available for everyone. I m sure you all have seen our beautiful Church library outside in front of our building. This library is well used by community kids and their families. In fact, every week we are adding 10 to 15 books for children and teens to swap or borrow books. However, our library is in need of specific types of books which include: Christian and faith based books for children and young adults (however, we will take any children s books). Additionally, we are looking to collect teen bibles. Books should be in good condition. You may bring them to Church any Sunday and place in the giving basket in the Narthex. This will be our Giving Basket Campaign for the 2nd quarter of The last Sunday to bring donations is June 26th. To learn more about our Little Free Library go to: Update on Ministry Planning Team Meeting As always we have a lot going on! For such a small congregation, we do our best to share the love of Christ with all! June 26: The Cub Scouts will hold a Rain Gutter Regatta & Picnic Following, we will enjoy a potluck lunch and a fun afternoon making sail boats and racing them in rain gutters! It is a fun time for all ages. This is a scout, Church and community event so plan on attending and enjoy the fun, fellowship and some healthy competition. S moresfest is BACK and BETTER THAN EVER! It will include hamburgers and hot dogs, side dishes, s mores of all kinds with singing and outdoor games. It will be held the second Saturday in June, July, August and September. We will need donations of chocolate, graham crackers, hamburgers, hot dogs and different side salads! Non-perishable items may be placed in the box in the sanctuary. We will begin planning VBS, which will be held July 20, 21 and 22 with a closing ceremony on July 24 on Friends and Family Day. Please add these dates to your calendar now! Everyone s help will be needed in some way, so please plan to volunteer. July 24th will wrap up VBS with our annual Friends and Family Day. It is our hope to have the mobile Central PA Blood Bank at the Church so that Members can donate blood. We will also have Child ID kits, family activities and other fun things to do, i.e. crafts, games, music and fun. Please plan on attending and bring your family and friends. Basket raffle and Spaghetti Dinner Planning Committee forming now! This is one of our biggest fundraisers and takes a lot of work to make it successful. This year we want to have all the baskets done and on display in the Fellowship Hall by October 31st. We would like to begin selling advance tickets by October 15thPlease see Diana Onstott or Barb Plaza to join the planning committee. 3

Outreach Ministries/Thank Yous Reaching out...partnering with others.to serve our community This month the FCC girl scouts.....helped with the Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser. Girl Scout Corner!...brought a full meal for 50 people to the Bethesda Mission....weeded the garden outside the church office. (We will be doing more yard work in the gardens if it every stops raining.)...helped break down the computers for the VITA, Money in Your Pocket Tax program. Thank you for your continued support of the scouting program! Cub Scout Corner For the month of May, the weather was not on our side for Hikes. We did get to have fire training and eat s mores. We are digging for dinosaurs and getting ready for our Blue and Gold/Advancement banquet. We are also preparing for summer activities and a fresh new scout year! Both Girl & Boy Scouts will return to FCC in the fall for the new scouting season! We need YOU! There are many things around the Church that need to be done on a regular and consistent basis. Several of these things are not being completing regularly. 1. Bulletin boards need maintained monthly. You may offer to do one time or regularly. There are 6 boards that need maintained which include: the one in the Narthex, the parking lot entrance, the board outside the Fellowship Hall kitchen, the board where you sign up for altar flowers, the board at the 5th street entrance and finally, the board to the left of the Church platform. 2. The Church sign out front needs to be updated monthly. 3. The Church doors need to be unlocked by 9:15 am every Sunday. 4. In warmer months, the AC will need to be turned on every Saturday night. 5. The sound system needs to be turned on every Sunday morning by 9:15 AM. These are not hard things to do, but when only one or two people are completing the tasks, it can take up a lot of time. We need to divide up the work and get it done! If you are willing to make some small sacrifices to assist the Church meet basic tasks, we would be grateful! Please contact the church office with your availability to help do any of these items. Any combination of help would be appreciated. You are serving not only the Church, but the Lord s work through our Church in the Lemoyne Community. We wanted to extend a special thank you to Quality Cleaners on Market Street in Lemoyne for cleaning our FCC Flag for FREE! 4

Board Update/Finances/Mark Your Calendar/Fundraising Board Update * Pastor D. Marie opened the board meeting with a prayer * The Minutes from February and April board meetings were approved * Pastor D. Marie Tribble gave her ministry report * Glenn Haagen gave a report on the Deaconate * There was no Elder report * Property update was given by Glenn Haagen 1. A motion was made to approve the bid of $ to replace two steam valves on the heating system. Discussion occurred: the old valves CANNOT be repaired. They are simply too old. The board approved the motion and set a date of June 12th for the congregation to approve the expense. (According to our by-laws the congregation must approve any expense not in the original budget over $ ) 2. The Church phones are being replaced. 3. The Vulcan stove was cleaned and inspected by a Vulcan dealer. It is in working order. The only upgrade needed was to install a gas shut off. This was done by UGI. 4. The water line repairs were completed by Croft Brothers. 5. The lawn mower is ready for use this summer and the snow blower has been put away for winter. 6. The roof was repaired and hopefully this fixes the last water leak. We will need a new roof in 4 to 5 years maximum. 7. The grill was rebuilt for the summer S moresfest and other events. 8.Glenn is getting bids for painting the church. The paint is peeling off. Other info: 1. The tire planters will be finished and placed on the office porch complete with flowers preventing the neighborhood children from playing on the porch. A planter will also be placed on the door to the cellar for the same reason. 2. An updated calendar was discussed. 3. Summerfest was cancelled by the Ministerium. Our response is to add music and prayer time to the s moresfest. We will try to offer a community service ourselves. Pastor D. will find out why the event was cancelled. Questions were also raised about the funds the ministerium holds. There is an accounting of it and the ministerial must approve use. 4. David Chaffin will be coming to preach on June 19th for Father s day. We will also have a face to face meeting with him to discuss Pastor D. Marie s installation and ordination requirements. 5. Financial report was presented by Harold. 6. The meeting adjourned with a prayer by Pastor D. Flower Sign Up Help us make the Church even more beautiful by signing up to donate flowers for Sunday mornings. The cost of flowers remains $ They are provided by Royer s. Please contact the Church office to reserve the date of your choice or simply sign your name on the flower chart in the back of the Sanctuary. Days are available for June. Grocery Store Card Please remember to support your Church by getting grocery store cards. Karns, Giant and Weis cards help us meet our Church budget by providing small, but steady fundraiser income. You may place orders in the offering plate or give to Diana Onstott any Sunday morning. The Church receives $50.00 every time we purchase $1, worth of cards. Remember to give generously and purchase an extra $25.00 gift card for the Church to use for those in need. We receive requests weekly! 8 First Christian Church Disciples of Christ 442 Hummel Ave, Lemoyne, PA PH: June 2016 Young Adult Corner It's officially June. Summer has started and school is out. I'm sure people have amazing things planned for the summer like going to the beach and camping. This summer I am looking forward to s'moresfest. S'mores are the ideal summer snack. They re also great for getting the community to come together and have lots of fun. I am also looking forward to the new Sunday school classes that start every Sunday before the service. It's a great opportunity for the youth of FCC to learn even though school is out. Even though it's summer, there is still work to be done. Since I am in high school they give assignments to do over the summer, which means no slacking for me. Personally, I have to read during the break. Ms. Joan Kain helped me find a lovely book that I will be sure to enjoy throughout the summer. It's called Me Before You written by Jojo Moyes. I hope to finish the book in time so that I can see the movie before it leaves theaters. Unlike most kids, I enjoy reading. I actually read for fun on occasion. By: Aariona Lee Aariona Lee is 15 years old and a freshman at Dallastown Senior High School. She is in all Honors classes and the Youth President of Youth and Young Adults for Central PA Baptist Association. Thank you Aariona for your submission! If you know a young adult willing to submit an article for July, please contact the Church Office. Thank you! 8
