1 TALLAHASSEE ELKS LODGE #937 BENEVOLENT AND PROTECTIVE ORDER OF ELKS ANTLERS SEPTEMBER 2005 MESSAGE FROM THE EXALTED RULER I am issuing a challenge to all members, myself included, to refrain from discussing Lodge business, or anything else of a personal nature concerning another member, while sitting in the lounge and drinking. We have all been guilty of this at one time or another. When we took our Obligation, we swore to always protect our Members, their good names and their families. When we engage in conversation or discussions concerning other members failings or shortcomings, we violate our Obligation and create divisions within the membership. This can only serve to hurt the Lodge and the principles of Elkdom. Our Constitution, statutes, and by-laws establish proper forum for hearing and settling grievances and I encourage each of you to utilize these forums rather than airing differences in the lounge. The September 6 th Lodge meeting marks District VP Ron Brown s official visit to Tallahassee Lodge #937, and since we expect visitors from possibly as far away as Lake City, the meeting time will be 8:00 pm I repeat 8:00 pm. Please attend this meeting and show your support for Ron. As most of you know by now, we are losing our cook and kitchen help. Both Trevor and Carlan found other employment. As a result, we are considering the feasibility of trying to run the kitchen with volunteers. We have done it in the past. If you have an opinion on this I will be more than happy to talk with you about it. Fraternally Yours, Harry Symons SECRETARY S CORNER Here we are at the end of the summer season, and sliding into fall. It s the start of football, related tailgate parties, and talk of our favorite teams. Vacations are over, families are back to school issues, and the slower summer months at the lodge are drawing to a close. If you have a little time on your hands, the lodge always can use an extra volunteer hand in the activities that we do. Be sure to read your entire newsletter when it arrives, so you can be aware of the things we are doing this month, and select those events where you want to participate. Those of us who contribute articles to The Antlers work hard to make every issue informative, interesting and inviting to the members, so take a few minutes to kick back and read the news. At the DD/VP clinic held in Madison last month, a raise in the district assessment was approved to help the District Vice President finance the events he is required to host during his term. The increase is from $1.75 to $2.00 per member, which will cost our lodge another $100 this year with our 400 members. It seems like everything is going up in price, not just gasoline. We will be working on a revision to our by-laws this fall, and there is an article in this issue discussing that task. Note that if you have a revision you would like considered, it should be submitted to the Lodge Secretary, and I will pass the suggestion on to the By-laws committee. For those members who chose to pay half of the year s dues, statements for the second half of the year will be mailed this month. Dues must be paid and posted by October 1 st to remain in good standing as a member. If I can be of help to you, contact me at the lodge. Plan to stop in the lounge on a Saturday evening with its new expanded hours until midnight. By vote of the House Committee, the lounge will now be open later on Saturdays. Entertainment is provided on Fridays, and entertainment is being considered for Saturday too. Obviously before dollars can be spent on entertainment, a pattern has to be established with a crowd coming in every week on Saturday. For now, Loyal Knight Keith White has arranged for a jukebox to be placed in the lounge, so music will be available. Come join us when the expanded hours begin! The starting date will soon be posted at the Lodge. NEW CATEGORY AND PRICE INCREASE OF LIBATION IN THE LOUNGE The House Committee performed a review of the liquor products we sell, and evaluated the cost per serving of the products we serve. As a result, a new category has been formed called Top Shelf brands, and the pricing per drink has been set accordingly at $4.00 by affirmative vote of the committee. There are no changes in prices for well, call, and premiums. These Top Shelf brands we sell include: Crown Royal, Belvedere Vodka, Cointreau, Glenlivet, and Grand Marnier. We will endeavor to keep them in stock. In order to allow sufficient time for the lodges in the North District to travel to Tallahassee, the meeting will begin at 8:00 pm. The lodge will have a meal available before the meeting, which will be tossed salad, roast pork with mushroom gravy, potatoes, vegetable and dessert. The meal cost is $5.00, and all members and their families are invited to come eat. Food will be available beginning at 6:00 pm. There will be a number of members visiting from other district lodges. There will be a review of the beer and wine products too, so watch for more information should there be another pricing adjustment.

3 ROAD CLEAN-UP ON PARK AVENUE 937 BY-LAWS REVISION Grand Lodge requires every Subordinate Lodge to revise lodge by-laws every five (5) years. This is to ensure Subordinate Lodge By-Laws are current with all Grand Lodge Statutes changed over the previous five (5) years. Subordinate Lodges may make other revisions on this occasion that are in compliance with current Grand Lodge Statutes. If any member of 937 feels changes are needed in the Tallahassee Lodge 937 By-Laws dated April 6, 2001, please put the suggestions in writing. These written suggestions should be given to the Lodge Secretary before November 1, The Lodge By-Laws Revision Committee will give consideration to all written suggestions. You may put your name and telephone number on the written suggestion in case the committee needs to contact you. The membership will be notified in the monthly bulletin (Antlers) when proposed revisions will be presented during a regular Lodge meeting for discussion. The membership will be notified in the monthly bulletin (Antlers) when proposed revisions will be presented during a regular Lodge meeting for the vote to approve or disapprove any revisions proposed. The proposed revisions will be published in the monthly bulletin (Antlers) with the notifications. Stanley Nettles, PDDGER 937 By-Laws Revision Committee Chairman Tel: Fax: SNETTLES@EOFINC.COM WISHING WELL COLLECTIONS For the month of July, Wishing Well donations totaled $ The collections are sent to the Harry-Anna Trust Fund to help support the two major projects sponsored by the Elks of Florida. Thank you (and our Bingo players) once again for your donations! Since January this year, we have sent $980 to the Harry-Anna Trust from our Wishing Well. For those of you who would like to make individual donations to the Harry-Anna Trust Fund, you can make one-time donations, or, you can purchase a certificate, where you make annual donations. A $100 certificate is paid in $20 installments. Billings for certificates are sent annually by the state association office on the anniversary month of the original payment. For example, if you purchase a trust fund certificate in September, you will be billed annually every September for the duration of the certificate contract. Our lodge continues with its participation in the city s Adopt- A-Road program, picking up trash once a month on Park Avenue. You can see the sign on Park Avenue just west of Magnolia Drive that advertises this fact. Heading east from Franklin Boulevard, there is another sign on Park. If you have an idea on a community service project that would give the lodge more visibility, contact the Exalted Ruler or the Lodge Secretary. 4 MILITARY NEWS Lodge member Bobby Buckley graduated from FSU on the morning of August 6th, and was promptly commissioned into the United States Air Force that afternoon as a Second Lieutenant. The commissioning ceremony was conducted in our lodge room and was a most impressive event. Lodge members and guests were invited to attend. Bobby received a degree in Civil Engineering from FSU. The following Saturday, August 13th, Bobby married Julia DuPaul. Bobby reports to Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta for flight training on September 4th. Julia will be able to join him there. August has certainly been a full month for Bobby, and we are proud to have him as a member of our lodge. FIRST ANNUAL ELKS AND CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS CHILI COOK-OFF We are still looking for sponsors for the Chili Cook-Off. Net proceeds benefit HOOAH (Honoring Our Own American Heroes) part of the Family Readiness Group of the National Guards. They will use the proceeds to benefit the families of the 32 local soldiers currently in Afghanistan. HOOAH will use the funds for those families when an emergency situation arises. We also need volunteers. There are many things that need to be done before the event and the day of the event. The event will be Saturday, October 22 nd. Please contact Denise Mick at CRAZY BINGO Monday, September 12 th, we will be having Crazy Elks Bingo. Elks and their guests are invited to participate. Social hour from 6-7 pm. Bingo starts at 7:00 pm. There are lots of prizes. Cards are $1.00 each and we only play 6 or 7 games. Come out and see what all the fuss is about! FAMILY FUN DAY You say we don t have anything for families??? Well, Monday, September 5 th (Labor Day) is Family Fun Day. Bring your children and grandchildren. We will have a hamburger/hotdog lunch from 12:00-2:00 pm. There will be games for children of all ages. We will have pie (sponge) throwing, horseshoes, ping pong, races, etc. Events run from 11:00 until 4:00. The Original Jolly Corks Toast Now is the hour when Elkdom's tower is darkened by the shroud of night, And father time on his silver chime Tolls off each moment's flight. In Cloistered halls each E1k recalls His Brothers where'er they be, And traces their faces to well-known places In the annals of memory. Whether they stand on a foreign land Or lie in an earthen bed, Whether they be on the boundless sea With the breakers of death ahead. Whate'er their plight on this eerie night Whate'er their fate may be Where ever they are be it near or far They are thinking of you and me. So drink from the fountain of fellowship To the Brother who clasped your hand And wrote your worth in the rock of earth And your faults upon the sand. TO OUR ABSENT BROTHERS

5 ONE AMERICA All of us, no matter from what land our parents came, no matter in what way we may severally worship our Creator, must stand shoulder to shoulder in a united America for the elimination of race and religious prejudice. We must stand for a reign of equal justice to both big and small. We must insist on the maintenance of the American standard of living. We must stand for an adequate national control which shall secure a better training of our young men in time of peace, both for the work of peace and for the work of war. We must direct every national resource, material and spiritual, to the task not of shirking difficulties, but of training our people to overcome difficulties. Our aim must be, not to make life easy and soft, not to soften soul and body, but to fit us in virile fashion to do a great work for all mankind. This great work can only be done by a mighty democracy, with these qualities of soul, guided by those qualities of mind, which will both make it refuse to do injustice to any other nation, and also enable it to hold its own against aggression by any other nation. In our relations with the outside world, we must abhor wrongdoing, and disdain to commit it, and we must no less disdain the baseness of spirit which lamely submits to wrongdoing. Finally and most important of all, we must strive for the establishment within our own borders of that stern and lofty standard of personal and public neutrality which shall guarantee to each man his rights, and which shall insist in return upon the full performance by each man of his duties both to his neighbor and to the great nation whose flag must symbolize in the future as it has symbolized in the past the highest hopes of all mankind.
