1 August 2016 Issue 584 President Dave s Report Greetings to all Papatoetoe Lions the best club and group of people in the District I think so anyway! Wasn t that a great Change of Officers night, combining Peter and Deidre, and Jeff s cooking; the recipe was right for a memorable evening. Thanks to Past President Graham for his excellent speech. He makes everyone feel great with his careful thanking of everyone in the year s projects. Hopefully Pam and Graham will continue to use their talents to keep me on the straight and narrow! We had another good dinner evening with 2 nd Vice District Governor Wendy Miller and Regional Zone Chairman Ricky Singh in attendance. Wendy is an inspirational speaker and her optimism about the future of our organisation infectious. She is so sure of a great future for us all and she was careful to praise Christine and Stella for showing us the way with computers. I think I ll just stick to s, but those two members are right into copy/pasting, downloading and design activities. I know they will be only too happy to help any of us keen to learn. Great to see John Fitzpatrick back in the club again he s not quite the bionic man but whatever those surgeon fellows did, the difference is plain for all to see. Thanks to Graham, our new Social Activities man. We are off to the Ruby Room on the 29 th of July. Good to see most members are going and look out! He has plenty more social activities in the pipeline! Congratulations to all those who received a 100% attendance pin you are the backbone of our club. Without your interest and attendance we would have been down the tubes a long time ago. A big thanks to Lion David Fox who is now training up Graham G to help him with the Drinks Organisation and Dispensing. There s quite a bit involved in planning, purchasing and arranging in the hall. Finally I want Prue and Jacob to know that the club are keeping them in our minds and wish them both a speedy recovery. We miss Prue sorely and hope she returns soon to the club in her role as 1 st VP. Regards from Pres. Dave igure 1Waka

As Lions let us work together to strengthen our clubs and communities through service. The Centennial Service Challenge encourages Lions to serve 100+ million people over the course of the Centennial Celebration through projects focusing on youth, hunger, vision and environment. Centennial Community Legacy Projects give clubs an opportunity to connect with their communities and increase their visibility by giving a lasting gift to the community. Centennial Membership Awards honour Lions for growing membership and increasing our service impact each Lion serves 50 people each year. Set a goal of adding 3 new members to your club. (Source: Wendy shared the LCI Presidential theme --- New Mountains to Climb. Climbing a mountain is used as a metaphor for many daily situations people confront. It represents something that is difficult and arduous and that takes a maximum effort to scale. But it is only by climbing those mountains that we ever excel to our fullest. Each mountain represents a new challenge a new opportunity. As our world continues to change, each of us face new challenges new opportunities to serve others. Blindness, measles, other health risks, food insecurity, lack of clean water, war and civil unrest all represent challenges for countless people around the world, and they represent opportunities for Lions as we work to make the world a better place. Lions must continue to climb upward, finding new ways to serve. Every mountain represents a new opportunity for Lions, and scaling each mountain provides each of us a chance to make the world better for another person. As we commence a year of celebrating 100 years of community service honouring our past and embracing our present it is our future that we must plan and begin to forge. Our future is bright. But speaking metaphorically, if we are to ascend the next mountain, we must lay out a trail in front of us; we must mark our trail for future generations of Lions who follow, and preserve our tradition of service. 3 David Fox s Notes: Over the next few months I will be looking back over Papatoetoe Lions Club 55 Years of service in the community, as we celebrate Lions International 100 th year. It will involve mainly the surviving club members who have been Presidents with highlights about their term. Some of the material will be taken from the club s 50 th Anniversary book. Let us start with the first Club President Graham Umbers, who served from 1961 to The first meeting of the club was held in November 1961 with Graham elected interim President. The Club s Charter was presented at a moving ceremony following a dinner at Panmure. It was attended by 24 members and their wives, leading local dignitaries, officers from District 202A Cabinet, representatives from other clubs and kindred service organisations. It had prominence in that it was the 16,000th club in the world and was chartered by Lions International World President Per Stahl of Sweden, the first president outside of the United States of America. As the euphoria of the Charter night slowly faded, the club embarked on administrative consolidation and community involvement, becoming a full-fledged service organisation. Many years later Rhys Thomas served as Club President from 1969 to 1970 and is the oldest surviving Charter member of the club. Rhys and his wife Annette currently live on Waiheke Island. He is a life member of the Lloyd Morgan Charitable Trust, a Melvin Jones Fellow as well as Life Member Lions International. He held many posts in the Club including Treasurer, Tail Twister and Membership Chairman, as well as being a Zone Chairman. Check out the next issue for more interesting facts about past presidents who are still active in our Club! Manurewa Change of Officers Early in July, the Manurewa Lions Club invited the two adjoining Clubs to attend their Change of Officers night on 20 th July, at the RSA in Manurewa. President David Denney, Past President Graham and Lion David Fox, attended from Papatoetoe where we joined a good representation from Papakura and the Manurewa Club, making a total of some 28 Lions and their families. District K, Constitutional and Legal officer, Chris Lynch, provided a very light hearted Change of Officers ceremony. A presentation of a Melvin Jones Fellow Award was made to the incoming President, Ricky Penney, by the Region 3 Chairman Ricky Singh. Thank you, Manurewa, for the very kind invitation. Third picture: Papatoetoe Lions Club President Dave receiving a banner from Wendy. Awards, recognitions and compliments: Kudos to Chris, Denny, Graeme, Pam and Reg who each received a special Volunteer Award. And congratulations to all the recipients of the 100% attendance pin. On the lighter side: A husband and wife were driving through South Auckland. As they approached Papatoetoe, they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town. They argued back and forth, then they stopped for lunch. At the counter, the husband asked the waitress, "Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are very slowly?" She leaned over the counter and said, "Burrr-gerrr Kiiing. Notice We have been reminded by a notice as you enter Acacia Court that parking is only for residents but also for visitors to the hall who hold Disability certificates. 5 Lions International Purposes To Organize, charter and supervise service clubs to be known as Lions clubs. To Coordinate the activities and standardize the administration of Lions Clubs. To Create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world. To Promote the principles of good government and good citizenship. To Take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community. To Unite the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding. To Provide a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest; provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be debated by club members. To Encourage service-minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavours. Lions Code of Ethics To Show my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service. To Seek success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my own self-respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part. To Remember that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another's; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself. Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself. To Hold friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one to another, but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given. Always to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state, and my community, and to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act, and deed. To give them freely of my time, labour and means. To Aid others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy. To Be Careful with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy. (Source:

6 Who we are Lions are ordinary people from all walks of life who enjoy getting together and doing good things. We are kind and generous people who want to help. That's why we work on projects to improve our communities and protect the environment. We get enormous satisfaction from the knowledge that what we do DOES make a difference. And we enjoy friendship and fun while doing so. Whenever Lions club members get together, problems get smaller. And communities get better. Because we help where help is needed in our own communities and around the world with unmatched integrity and energy. Lions Clubs New Zealand is part of a global organisation with 1.4 million members in 208 countries and geographic regions. With this much manpower, it's no wonder that Lions Club members can achieve extraordinary things, every day.
