2 2 BITS n PIECES FROM THE PRESIDENT The cliché is Doesn t time fly (when you are having fun!) Already we are now into December and you are no doubt into your preparations for the festive season and from what I am hearing, there seems to be a number of families soon to be arriving in Waikanae to join you. Over the weekend we have had the Senior Citizens Christmas lunch and of course our own celebration. To all of you involved in these events, your efforts in the organising and the participation, all greatly appreciated. You proved that they can be fun. Once again, the Senior Citizens party went off well and the feedback again confirming that this is a popular event. Thank you to Miles Deck and his team of Lions, and of course a very big thank you also to the wives and other helpers. Also thank you to Terry White and his team for our own Christmas party celebration. At our party we had with us two delightful young ladies from Germany as guests of David & Sue Gibbons. Over recent weeks you have completed two regular projects i.e. the Foodbank Appeal & of course our own garden trail. I can only say thank you for your efforts. From what I understand, the Foodbank appeal might have just about broke all records in the food collected. A very worthwhile project for the Kapiti Coast. (Ed note: see later in Bulletin Press release from the Foodbank). The final details of the Garden Trail are still being worked on and we will see a final report in due course. Kevin Woodley last month suggesting that if anybody had any comment, let the committee know. (Ed note: Kevin has provided an interim update later in this Bulletin). 3 3 Congratulations and well done Pres Dave for your first 6 months in the job. Below is a Paparazzi sneak shot of Pres Dave (which investigations reveal) is cleaning up some issues raised by his Board. It has been suggested that in his next 6 months of office Pres Dave delegate this difficult task and management tool to another Board member maybe someone requiring this type of on-the-job training e.g. the current 1 st VP! LADIES NIGHT - MEETING THURSDAY 25 JANUARY 2018 Social Meeting which will be used for the presentation of the Super Garden Trail proceeds. 4 4 WANTED CAN-TABS, WINE BOTTLE TOPS AND SPECTACLES (By IPP Paul Bevan) As you will all know, Lions SERVE the needs of those who could be said to be among the less fortunate than ourselves. For many years, Lions International has served Youth, those with medical challenges, and the blind or those with eyesight problems. Our Club has played its part by taking on the mundane role of collecting the high grade aluminium in the form of can-tabs and wine bottle tops and capsules, and by arranging the collection of used spectacles, and over the years many thousands of these have been sent away for re-cycling, and to raise money to assist those in need. With the festive season upon us, there is a real opportunity to increase our collections of these items and even to encourage your neighbours, and members of your family to join in the activity for the benefit of others. Please bring the aluminium to our Club meetings ( Can-tabs and bottle tops in separate bags ) and give them to Paul Bevan, or put them in our storage cupboard, and they will be passed on to our Zone Chairman. Used spectacles should be given to Val Bennett or Miles Deck, who will send them away for re-cycling to the South Pacific for people with eyesight problems or who have had cataract operations provided by Lions under the Sight First Programme. Our Club has already arranged Specs collection with all the op-shops, retirement homes and pharmacies. These are a couple of projects which we can all take a part in and which do not require any exertion, just a mindset - to SERVE. We look forward with thanks to your participation SPRING GARDEN TRAIL UPDATE (By 1 st VP Kevin Woodley) In the last Bulletin I provided an update from the recent Garden Trail. Since then more accounts have been paid and more income has been banked with the result that we are looking at a profit of $18-19,000 to be shared between the two beneficiaries - Mary Potter Hospice and Zeal Youth Development Centre. Thank you, once again, to everybody who was involved with the event. In the last Bulletin and when I spoke at the Business Meeting on 23 November, I asked for any comments, concerns, issues or ideas that Lions members may have that would be of benefit to future Garden Trails. Some comments have been received, but it is not Too late to make your comments if you wish. Please send any comments by to any of the Garden Trail committee members.

5 5 ALL HAPPENING FOR ZEAL. (Zeal Reports) Kapiti Youth Centre to begin build in January 2018 as 2017 ends on a high note November proved to be one of the busiest months in 2017 for the Zeal Kapiti team, with more great local events and community partnerships closing out the year. The crew packed in to the van and delivered 1,000 yellow pages to Kapiti residents with the Waikanae Lions Club, spending two sweaty afternoons with some of our volunteer team. At the annual Kapiti Festival (Strawberry Festival fundraising for Mary Potter Hospice), Zeal ran the main stage for the day, with students from our Programmes running the sound mixer and making coffee. Thanks to the amazing folk at Waikanae Lions Club, we were chosen to be a recipient charity of their 2017 Garden Trail fundraiser. Young Zeal musicians provided entertainment, our Barista students provided coffee, and the Lions provided a rare glimpse in to some of the meanest private gardens in the area.

6 6 And for the last big news of the year, construction of our new Zeal youth center is kicking off in mid-january. Thanks so much to everyone who has supported us in 2017! Ed note: As mentioned in the Zeal report the upgrade of their building (former Vegeland next to Pak n Save, Paraparaumu) is ready to start construction mid January! Zeal will be moving out of their current building next week and into a temporary space in the Community Centre. The timeframe indicated is 25 weeks for construction, so Zeal is looking forward to opening their new facility early July Want to know more what Zeal and their latest activities have a look at SOME WEE PICS OF THE SENIOR CITIZENS LUNCH OUR CHRISTMAS FELLOWSHIP (Looks like it was a great fun day although not sure what s going on at one table?)

9 9 FOODBANK COLLECTION BEST IN YEARS Press Release The Christmas spirit arrived early this year for Foodbank, with the Combined Lions of Kapiti and Otaki collection being a huge success. According to Food bank s, appeal coordinator Margaret Griffith this year has been even more successful than the previous 3 years and 420 banana boxes full of donated food are now in storage We estimate the value of what we received at $53,600! This provides us with our major annual restock, vital for meeting the increased demand, especially over Christmas, she said. The Foodbank collection is a joint effort by the five Kapiti and Otaki Lions clubs, and was coordinated by Sue Leen of Kapakapanui Lions. She said Lions hand-delivered twenty thousand marked plastic bags over the previous week and collected them on Saturday morning. Sue said Lions were thrilled at the public s generosity. She attributed the success to a number of factors including the district-wide pre-collection distribution of the bags, with information on when the collection would take place and what type of supplies were best for the needy. Also, the classified advertising in the Kapiti Observer and editorial coverage from the Kapiti News, plus from BeachFM and The Radio Network was invaluable and much appreciated, as was financial help from the KCDC s three community boards. Foodbank s Margaret Griffith was delighted with the volume of goods which she said will be greatly appreciated by those in need over the next few months. She was also grateful to Lions and to the team of volunteers from the church of the Latter Day Saints who helped at Foodbank with the lifting, sorting and packing. And most of all we are grateful for the community-wide generosity, especially those in the retirement villages who were particularly generous, which is especially gratifying coming from people, most of whom are on fixed incomes, she said. 10 10 Christmas Tree and the Christmas Fairy A long time ago, Santa had had just one of those weeks. Four elves had been caught flogging off toys on TradeMe, Dancer had come out, and was hitting on Prancer, the GPS on the sleigh had packed up but the techs were on Christmas leave, and they said it wasn t supposed to work in the snow, anyway, so the guarantee was null and void. He was about to explode as he climbed on the sleigh dropping his sack of toys as he did so. Just as he was about to take off, a fairy came rushing up with another Christmas Tree and panted Where do you want me to stick this?
