1 July/August We are happy to welcome our new pastor and his wife, Rev. Bob Berghuis and Terry, to the Wesley family. Robert comes to us from Calvary United Methodist Church in Richmond. He is a graduate of San Diego State University, majoring in business with minoring in religious studies and economics. He received his Master of Divinity at the Candler School of Theology. Rev Doctor Ralph David Abernathy at West Hunter Street Baptist Church of the Progressive National Baptist Convention ordained him 1989 and was elected Elder of the United Methodist Church of the Virginia Conference in He has served on various district/conference boards and agencies, He has served churches in Brookneal, Knotts Island, the Northern Neck, Winchester, Edinburg and Richmond. Robert s wife is Theresa. He has three children, from oldest to youngest: Maggie, Ben, and Jake. Robert s passion is for each one of us to have a deeper and more intimate relationship with Jesus Christ through Sons Lordship, the Father s grace, and the leading and empowering of the Holy Spirit.

2 Page 2 Club Sandwich News The Club Sandwich Summer enrichment and free lunch program is off to a great start. We are having so much fun! We serve lunch from 12:30 until 1:00 pm and then students are encouraged to participate in the many activities that we have planned. Snacks are served at 2:00 and then the students have free time until dismissal at 2:30. The food is provided by the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. We will be accepting donations of school supplies throughout the summer. Hopefully, we will be able to help each and every child with their back to school needs. Volunteers are always welcome. Please continue to pray for the future success of our after school and free lunch programs. 3 Page 3 United Methodist Men We are off for the summer. Our next meeting will be in September. Check out the district UMM on the web at OVER TWENTY-ONE CLUB "The Over 21 Club has been going on for over 5 years. We have put out a lot of information to the people who attend. Every year we try to sponsor at least one event. This year we are sponsoring the "Faith and Family Night" at the Tidewater Tides baseball game on the 24July, The cost was $8.00 and we have had at least 33 people that signed up for the game. We did get a bonus, the single game turned into a double header. The gate will open at 4:00 pm and the first pitch will start at 5:05 pm. Our next two luncheons will be held on July 2 and August 6. The first will be at the Golden Corral, at 12:00 noon on North Military Highway. The second luncheon will be at Mom and Pops Dinner at 12:00 noon located in a small plaza on Bayview Blvd, just off Tidewater Drive. Please come out and join us. We always have a wonderful time. 10 Page 10 4 Cans 4 Conference and Kits Dear Co-Workers in the Ministry of the Church, It is with a great sense of joy that I write to share with you the good news of the outcome of this year s 4 Cans 4 Conference offering during our recent Annual Conference session. According to the Peninsula Food Bank, located in Newport News, you brought a total of 8825 pounds of canned and staple goods for their use in helping the poor and hungry in the lower Peninsula region! Food Bank tells me that the food, plus the $378 in cash gifts, will provide more than 9,000 meals to those in nutritional jeopardy in the area in which our Conference met. Bless you, they said, because this is the time of the year that 2 things happen: the level of need increases (schools are out and children are home, etc.), and the amount of food they receive decreases (due to summer vacations, etc.). You made a difference! Wesley provided 1 box of food.
