2 From the Pastor s Pen Pastor s Report to Consistory for July 7 meeting June 25, 2014 The biggest news of the month is that at long last our new website denmarkmanorchurch.org is up and running. Besides all of the work that Carol Martin did on this, Rheba and I have worked to make it accurate, relevant and up to date. Rheba and Carol have met, so that Rheba can keep the site current. At some point, I will get instructions from Rheba so that more than one designated person has access to the site. Dave Conner has found a way to extract sermons from the Sunday recordings of the worship service and we are working towards putting these on the site. We are also working to get a link from the old site to the new one, because right now if you Google Denmark Manor UCC you get the old site. The Christian Education Committee met on June 9. Besides our own Vacation Bible School, we are going to do a joint program with First UCC in Harrison City August 15 and 16. In regards to the program that we will do on our own during the 10:00AM worship hour in August, I am having our high-schoolers and R.J. work with Barb Miller, Stacie Driscoll and me in planning the program. We are adapting an on-line curriculum from our UCC/Disciples of Christ Global Ministries. The ROC Team and Worship Team took a trip on Sat., June 25 to East Liberty Presbyterian Church to experience their Taize service. It is not that I expect that we will do such a service, but it is important for the group to be exposed to a variety of worship experiences. I will be attending Calvin Presbyterian Church in Zelienople (where Graham Standish is pastor), on August 17 which I am taking as a vacation day. I have room in my car for two more people if anyone wants to go with me. Just let me know some time in July. We received some additional historic information from Pat Kistler and have contacted Bruce Good to see if he could digitalize at least one of the documents which are notes from the Ladies Night Society from There are also a number of older annual reports dating back to about 1946 that are of significant value. This has been a very busy month with so many people in our congregation critically ill. I have spent a lot of time with people on the phone and in personal visits at home, in hospitals and care facilities. I am really ready for my 8 days of retreat, because I need to get my batteries recharged. The Rev. Bob McKie will be on call for me while I am away. 3 Our Mission Project Vacation Bible School Vacation Bible School at Denmark Manor takes place during worship for all children and youth. This year for Vacation Bible School, our theme is Love God, Love Others. We will be using a curriculum provided by the United Church of Christ that is soundly Biblical. VBS is held for one hour at the same time as worship (10AM) on August 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31. If your child cannot attend regularly, you are most welcome for all remaining dates! Did you know that during the month of August we are beginning to assemble school kits again? UCC Disaster Ministries was recently notified that stock supplies of Church World Service School Kits were very low due in part to the ongoing situation in Syria. School Kits give children in impoverished schools, refugee camps, or other difficult settings some of the basic tools for learning. To assemble a School Kit you will need: School Kit items are One pair of blunt metal scissors (rounded tip) Three 70-count spiral notebooks or notebooks totaling 200- economical and available 210 pages (no loose-leaf or filler paper) at Dollar stores, WalMart, One 30-centimeter ruler (12") Target. One hand-held pencil sharpener One large eraser Six new pencils with erasers One box of 24 crayons (only 24) Please follow the list exactly so that items do not have to be replaced. Also, it would be of help to include the Processing/shipping cost of $2 per Kit. Page 3

Church School Starts September 7 with Opening About OPENING OPENING is when we gather at 10AM on Sundays (beginning September 7) and celebrate birthdays as well as hear an inspirational message by Joni Mattei. This is followed by a sweet treat in the Fellowship Hall. Can you suggest a Name for OPENING that captures this time for learning and fellowship? 5 JOINT VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL on August 15, 16, and Thanks to First UCC in Harrison City for their hospitality in hosting a Joint Vacation Bible School beginning Friday, August 15, 16 and 17. The Joint VBS includes Preschool Age 3 through Youth Age 16. CROP Walk Date is September 21 Our Annual CROP WALK is scheduled for September 21 at 2:00PM. We will meet and walk at the Bushy Run Battlefield again. Registration will be available starting Sunday, August 24 before and after Worship. Westmoreland Association Educational Event is October 12 - Denmark Manor UCC will be hosting the event this Fall. We will be serving a pasta dinner (with accommodations for those who have gluten sensitivity). We will need help with this. See Allen Mattei to volunteer.
