October 2005 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Lewis & Clark 200th Anniversary Bulletin Katrina Update When hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, the Knights of Columbus swung into action. At the Supreme level, the Supreme Board announced the largest disaster relief effort in its history and pledged to provide $2.5 million in financial assistance, the Supreme Knight organized multiple conference calls of State Deputies and challenged local Knights to contribute to the Knights of Columbus Katrina Relief Fund in an amount equal or greater than the Order's pledge, and Columbian Magazine set up an address to collect stories (send updates to Katrina@kofc.org). As of Sept. 26, the Order s Hurricane Katrina relief fund has received 2,407 gifts totaling $448,189. Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson toured areas of Louisiana and Mississippi devastated by Hurricane Katrina. He said the Knights of Columbus will be involved in relief efforts in the Gulf region for at least the next two years. Anderson also met with Houston area Knights helping evacuees in Texas. In Biloxi, two of the four Catholic high schools and 4 of 14 elementary schools were destroyed and 7 other elementary schools were severely damaged. At the State level, we set up a Relief Fund, solicited donations to collect a total equivalent to at least one dollar for every Knight in the state, put regular updates on the website, and appointed IPSD Pat Maloney to the new position as state chairman for disaster relief to coordinate responses with Supreme not only for Katrina, but for similar events. (An alias address has been set up for Pat for the Katrina Relief Fund - Katrina@kofc-wa.org.) At the Council level, individuals showed the innovation and initiative to raise funds and supplies for the evacuees. As of September 17, 2005, the donations from Washington State councils to the state fund had reached $10,000, well on our way to achieving our goal of $15,500 (one dollar for every member in the state). Please remember to send your donations to State Secretary John Walker. Some of us in our past have been injured, had a vehicle or a house damaged, lost loved ones, been unemployed, forced to move to another state, lived for a while in motels or RVs, etc. But how many of us have had this all happen at the same time? That is the situation for the hurricane evacuees and we need to help them out. When this is all said and done, I know the Brother Knights of the Washington State Council will be able to say, We saw the hungry and fed them. We saw the thirsty and gave them water. We saw the strangers and took them in. And we will - because we re the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic, family, fraternal, SERVICE organization! Special Days at the Special Olympics State Deputy Karl Hadley presents a check for $10,000 to David Taylor, Member of the Board of Directors for the Special Olympics. The Special Olympics were held in Everett and Meadowdale August 27 & 28 for two days of sporting events and a gala celebration Saturday Evening at the Boeing Cafeteria in Everett. The staff of the SO Washington along with the athletes wish to say thanks to all the knights in the state for the check which helps pay for the summer games. Clark wrote, The Countrey about two forks is an open Plain on either Side...the water of the South fork is a greenish blue, the north as clear as cristial. our diet extremely bad... They then journeyed down the Snake River to the Columbia River. Entries in Clark s log in October included, The hills or assents from the water is faced with a dark ruged Stone. - William Clark, Oct. 12, proceeded on...to the junction of this river (Snake) and the Columbia which joins from the N.W. In every direction from the junction of those rivers the Countrey is one Continued plain...except a range of high Countrey which runs from S.W & N E... Hood). - William Clark, October 18, Feedback from Our WA State Senators Following the 2005 Supreme Convention, the State Deputy sent Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray some of the resolutions pertaining to the Congress. Here are some excerpts of their responses: Senator Cantwell: Thank you for contacting me with your views about abortion. I support a woman's right to choose, as well as efforts to strengthen family planning. Thank you for writing to express your views on the nomination of John G. Roberts to be a Justice on the United States Supreme Court. I believe it is critical that we conduct a comprehensive evaluation of each nominee's qualifications. Thank you for contacting me to express your view on a Constitutional Amendment to protect the American flag. As a free speech advocate, I oppose this amendment. Senator Murray: Thank you for contacting me. I appreciate having the benefit of your views on these matters. We too are at a confluence of sorts. We have just entered the fraternal year and are now at the confluence where the Summer River of organizational meetings and reports meet the Fall River of membership recruitment and program implementation. With the steep cliffs of high membership and insurance quotas one either side, are you ready to run the rapids? Lewis and Clark had the help of the Shoshone, Salish, and Nez Perce and other local natives to help them along the way (and Sacajawea to guide them). The Nez Perce people generously shared a round root and flatbread made of this same root with the hungry Corps of Discovery. Today we call the plant and its edible root camas. Fortunately, you Grand Knights have the help of your State Officers, District Deputies, State Chairmen, and council members (and your wives to guide you). You ve been given the charts and know where the shoals are located. You know your destination. You have the Bread of Life. Go forth and Discover a Knight! As of September 30, 2005, only 46 of 138 councils (33%) have recorded new members with Supreme. (Congratulations to councils 829, 6686, 13606, and for having already achieved 100% or more of their membership quotas and councils 8455, 13560, and for achieving 100% or more of their insurance quotas!) I wrote this article in the balcony of my hotel room in Tampa, Florida. I was in this beautiful city because I recently attended the Annual Vocation s Conference sponsored by the National Conference of Diocesan Vocation Directors, or simply referred to as NCDVD, a sweetsounding acronym indeed! (By the way, please note, lest I be suspected of living a rather extravagant life, I said, Vocation, not VACATION!) What was happening below my hotel balcony that afternoon inspired me to reflect on this theme of silence as important and necessary in our spiritual growth. A huge group of employees of perhaps a big organization was having what appeared to be a concluding dinner and party around the hotel s swimming pool. There was a band playing music. It was loud! I noticed that those in conversation almost had to shout in order to be heard. Some were dancing. Many were sunbathing. They were having a wonderful time. This seems to be a great organization to work for. What distracted me was the competing sound coming from the neighboring hotel. There was also a band playing music as equally loud. What eventually became very obvious to me was that the competing sounds were completely ruining the beautiful music that each band was making. I immediately realized that my observation captured a spiritual experience for many of us. There are many voices that compete to get our attention, often drowning that one voice that matters the most, that one voice that can ultimately bring us rest. Our Blessed Mother is an example of one who listens attentively to that one voice that matters the most, that one voice that can ultimately bring us rest. St. Augustine once said, The Blessed Virgin Mary clearly carried out the will of the Father, and therefore it is a greater thing for her to be a disciple of Christ than to be his mother. She is more blessed in being a disciple of Christ than in being the mother of Christ. Indeed, in the gospel of Luke, Jesus says, Blessed are those who hear the word of God and act on it. Mary heard the word of God and acted on it because she treasured the words in her heart and Silence in Spiritual Growth by Fr. Wilmar O Zabala pondered them. Treasuring and pondering make up her spiritual communion with God. Treasuring and pondering seem to be a foreign concept for many of us because we are always on a run, because we are always busy and don t have time, because we think that prayer should be full of words, because the noises we encounter around us do not give us silence necessary for reflection. It s often said that silence is a prerequisite of prayer. That s the reason why silence has an importance place and value in our liturgy. A period of silence between our readings at Mass is encouraged so that we can treasure and ponder what has just been read. A period of silence after the homily is important so that we can treasure and ponder what was said, and, yes, we still do that even if there s nothing worth treasuring and pondering in the homily at all! Mother Teresa used to tell the Missionaries of Charity that they will never learn to pray until they keep silence. She values those words because she knows that the fruit of silence is faith. The fruit of faith is prayer. The fruit of prayer is love. The fruit of love is service. But remember that silence in prayer is more than the absence of noise. Sometimes our prayer life, our treasuring and pondering, suffers because our hearts are not silent. God speaks only in the silence of the heart. Only after we have listened can we speak and act from the fullness of our hearts. There is a sentence, really a gem of spiritual wisdom, in Kathleen Norris book Amazing Grace that I find myself returning to when my own life becomes too noisy and distractions overwhelm me: Silence reminds me to take my soul with me wherever I go. Indeed, we need silence to be alone with God, to listen to him, to ponder his words deep in our hearts. To pray is to be alone with God in silence in order to be renewed and to be transformed. I believe that renewal and transformation are the fruits of treasuring and pondering. Treasuring and pondering are spiritual ingredients to an authentic discipleship with Christ. Father Wilmar Rev. We re suggesting sometime close to Columbus Day for the Blitz, but remember that it s up to you to pick a date that works for your council and your parish. By now you should have met with your pastor and should be well underway to make it happen. If not it s not too late! It s a scramble, but it s worth the extra effort to gain some new members for The Supreme Council s website, has some excellent resources for membership including presentation materials to assist in preparing for the Blitz. It also provides an order form for Blitz materials and handouts. Don t forget that councils achieving 100% of their membership quota by December 31 can earn a Knights of Columbus jacket for the Grand Knight. These jackets are excellent and they re being proudly worn by many of last year s winners. Also, in addition to the signed commemorative book the State Council will award to each Grand Knight that achieves 200% of their membership quota by June 30, 2006, the Supreme Council now awards a Double Star lapel pin for councils that earn a Star Council award and achieve double their membership quota. District Deputies can earn a KC jacket for achieving 100% of their district quota by December 31, and can earn an All Star varsity jacket if all of their councils achieve the Star Council Award. Finally, a reminder about an incentive prize each Grand Knight can win for reporting the council s participation in the Blitz. We will be awarding the new book, By Their Works, which provides stories about Knights in action throughout the Order. Five books will be awarded by random drawing, and an additional book will be given to the most successful Blitz council in each size division based on reported signed Form 100's. Remember to submit your reports to the District Deputy and to me by November 15, Vivat Jesus! Message from Membership Chairman Don McBride, State Advocate Membership Chairman The following 5 councils (3.6%) have not submitted Form 185 (as of 9/302005) Message from General Program Director Worthy Brothers, As the first reporting time has come and gone only 43% of the councils submitted their July/ August Service Program report. In districts 5, 18, 28 and 31 no councils reported. I congratulate districts 7 and 24 for having 100% reporting. Several districts lacked one and a few lacked two from being 100%. One of the sadder facts is we still have 5 councils not having submitted their form 185 report of elected officers and 28 councils who have not submitted their form 365 report of council committees. Those councils know whom they are, so get the job done! Your council audit should have been completed and turned in. 50% of the councils still have not submitted their audit to the State Deputy. Presuming your audit is complete please turn in the form. Your activities should be turned toward the membership blitz, basketball free-throw and keep Christ in Christmas program. Another area which should concern you greatly is where in your area is the next 2 nd and 3 rd degree. Don t let an opportunity slide by to assist your Brother Knights in advancing to Knighthood. Remember, the membership blitz is your opportunity to achieve or surpass your council membership goal for this fraternal year. Another point to consider is each new or reinstated Knight is a potential insurance member thus helping you achieve your insurance quota goal. THANK YOU for your participation!!! Find time to thank God for all of your blessings this month. Also find some time this month to appreciate your family, and to show them how much you care. Early in September, I sent out letters to all Grand Knights, asking them to consider supporting additional candidates, and advising them whether or not I had received the RSVP report from them. At this date, there are still seminarians who need support, and there are a number of participating Councils and Assemblies who have not responded to my plea for the RSVP form. Please respond - this inquiry will not go away - and if necessary, the District Deputy will be contacted to assist in gathering this information. "Every Seminarian Supported" - it will again be accomplished by Washington State Council. Recently, I received a letter from a seminarian studying for the Archdiocese of Seattle, Ray Cleaveland. He writes: I am writing to thank you for your letter of September 1st about vocations. I appreciate all the support that the Knights have been giving me. I am a 3rd degree Knight from Council 829 in Bellingham, so I know the Knights' good work as well. In addition, I have already applied for the Bishop Daily scholarship through the Supreme Council for the year I hope to hear the results soon. Congress of the United States, et al., will immediately appeal Wednesday's decision by U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence Karlton, holding that reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in school is unconstitutional.

7 October, 2005 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin Page 7 Message from Recruitment Chairman We are through three months of the fraternal year and on your way to having a great year as Grand Knight. I know that as I look back on my tenure as Grand Knight I was all pumped up to achieve my goals and make star council. One of the areas I did not look at until the very end of my term was membership. Membership chairmen for each council have the job of getting new members to join the council. But as I found out if something goes wrong, or a number of things come up during the year, your council may not get new members signed up. So, as Grand Knight of your council you need to always be aware of recruiting new members all year long and make sure your membership chairman and program are actively recruiting new members. By now you have all received your Membership Newsletter and Blitz Program from Supreme. Both of these mailings list the steps or phases of conducting a recruitment blitz program. I would like to summarize the steps or phases for you. I have found in teaching that repetition is a great tool for learning. Phase 1: The Preparation Phase begins by getting permission from the pastor to hold a membership blitz at the church during a specific weekend and get the event advertised in the church bulletin. Next be sure to order enough recruitment materials to have on hand. Then inform your insurance agent and recruit enough members to be on hand to answer questions of prospective candidates. Phase 2: The Execution Phase starts by setting up information tables at every door of the church before Mass. Have plenty of prospect cards and pencils on hand for each prospect. Make arrangements with the pastor to have a membership recruitment announcement made during each Mass. Lastly have brother Knights on hand to answer any questions and to collect prospect cards. Phase 3: The Follow-Up Phase takes place within 48 hours when contact is made with each prospect that you got during phase two. Be sure to let each prospect know that you will be holding an informational meeting and give them the time and date and offer transportation if needed. Phase 4: The Orientation Phase begins with your organizing of the informational session. Be sure to have plenty of recruitment brochures and information about your council on hand. Consider showing a video on recruitment from Supreme. Have a member explain requirements for membership and then offer each candidate a form #100 to fill out before leaving. Announce the date and time of the next First Degree. Phase 5: The First Degree should be scheduled no more than two weeks after your informational session. We are planning to have a salmon fishing trip - sponsored by the Knights from Richland Council #3307 on the Hanford Reach. The last few years the Colville squires have spent very successful outings on the Hanford Reach with Knights from this council. This year we are opening it up to other Squires that may be interested. Here is the information for the trip: WHAT: Squires Salmon Fishing Trip WHO: Squires and their Counselors (Father Prior too) WHEN: Starting October 21 st with a pizza feed and salmon seminar -- Hosted by Don McBride - Richland Council #3307. One Human Life Message from the State Treasurer Exemplification Fund Each District Deputy has received an update of the Exemplification Fund balance for councils within his district for the past Quarter (July- September). I ve asked them to pass this information along to the councils for action. Some councils are in arrears from past years. Request the Grand Knight and Financial Secretary of these councils attempt to make the payment. Any questions on the due payment can be resolved if contact is made with the State Treasurer. Our hope is that all non payments can be cleared. As a reminder, each 1st Degree Candidate (except priests or seminarians) are requested to pay $8.00 toward the Exemplification Fund. The Fund supports the 3 rd Degree team expenses as they travel to your area to administer the 3 rd Degree Exemplification. 9 October, 2005 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin Page 9 In June 2000 the Supreme Court of the United States took center stage in the abortion issue by striking down a Nebraska law that banned partial birth abortion, jeopardizing similar restrictions in 30 other states. The Supreme Court action keeps partial birth abortion legal. It was a split vote 5 to 4. The fact that it was a split vote, one so close is a faint ray of hope. Often, that is all that is needed for those who believe in the power of prayer, fasting, penance and perseverance 1. In the coming months our nation will be deciding two Supreme Court justice appointments. Abortion is still the issue. Prayer is still needed. Fasting and penance is still needed. Your Financial Secretary should have received the Respect Life Program from Supreme Headquarters. Pointed out in the program is that every council has in place an active pro-life chair couple or a least a pro-life chairman to initiate pro-life projects and carry them through. So is fasting and penance.. For those Grand Knights who have access to the Grand Knights Handbook published by PSD Wayne C. Hogan, under the council section pages III-3 to III-5, you will find an excellent outline of protocol. There is a section that covers head table protocol but if you would like a order of seating, the Fourth Degree Color Corps Handbook on pages 6 and 7 will give you a general overview. Normally, in the third degree, the State Deputy will sit on the left side of the podium (center out) and the ranking guest on the right, be it the Archbishop, Bishop, Clergy, Supreme Representatives or whoever is the guest of honor. This is a very easy understanding using the two documents reference above. The Grand Knights Handbook and the Color Corps Handbook will answer most of your questions. The only difference will be, if the function is a Fourth Degree affair, then the Master will replace the State Deputy on the left hand side of the podium and the sequence will follow from there. This would be the Archbishop, Bishop, Clergy, State Deputy, Vice Supreme Master and so on. The rest of the list is pretty self explanatory, just remembering which function we are dealing with, Third or Fourth Degree. Dress for the day is tuxedo with social baldric or dark suit. The scheduled activities for the day are as follows: 11:30an Registration 1:00pm Exemplification program 5:00pm Mass 7:00pm Dinner Registration will be in the lobby. Exemplification will be in the Colonial Room for candidates and 4th degree members only. Knighting ceremony will take place in the Colonial Room after the Exemplification and wives and guests can observe and take pictures. Social hour will follow. Wives and guests will be offered local tours while the Exemplification takes place. Mass will be at 5:00pm in the Colonial Room followed by dinner at 7:00pm in the Colonial Room. 10 Page 10 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin October, 2005 First Degree Team Ceremonial Competition October is the last month of the three-month district level competition. If your council's first degree team has not yet been evaluated, contact your district deputy soonest and schedule an evaluation. What if your council's first degree team is being formed or has just been formed but not yet certified, can it still compete in the State First Degree Team Ceremonial Competition? The answer is a definite yes. In fact, participating in the ceremonial competition can be an incentive to finally form a first degree team, the team be certified, and be selected as the district's representative in the regional level competition. I cannot guaranty that your council will be selected as your district's representative first degree team. I can guaranty that if your council's first degree team does not participate in the ceremonial competition, it will not compete at the regional or state level and it will not be selected, at least this year, as the 'Best of the Best' first degree team in Washington. If your council's first degree team has not yet been certified, the team may be certified concurrently with the district deputy's evaluation. Your District Deputy, in addition to certifying the team, can certify individual team members. Remember, the district deputies are to submit the name of the council whose first degree team will be representing your district to me no later than October 31. The second level of competition, the Regional Level, will be conducted in November and December. If the council is concerned about traveling to the degree site and using an unfamiliar site, do not be concerned. The second level - Regional competition evaluation, will be conducted at the council's meeting facility. You do not come to us, we come to you. At this level, you will be using the same chamber that you have used for years. Your team members do not have to travel and neither do your candidates. And if you thought it could not get any better, it does. You schedule the date and time of the degree in addition to scheduling the location as long as it is in November or December. The only thing preventing a council from participating in the ceremonial competition is its desire to participate. Some councils say that their team is not good enough to compete, what a defeatist attitude. If you believe that you are not good enough, you will become not good enough. If you believe you can never achieve a goal, you will never achieve a goal. Never quit before you compete in any endeavor. Believe your council can be successful, work to make it successful, and it will become successful. Hogan, PSD State Ceremonial Chairman Revised First Degree Ceremonial Books The original plan was to issue the revised first degree ceremonial books to all councils that were issued ceremonial books by mid-september. However, due to the magnitude of the printing, over 40,000 ceremonial books each of which has to be numbered with a unique serial number, recorded at Supreme for accountability, packaged and then mailed to the financial secretaries of over 6,000 councils, this targeted date is not achievable. The new anticipated mailing is mid-october The package of five first degree ceremonial books will be mailed to the council's financial secretary. In addition to the five ceremonial books, there will be instructions on returning the old first degree ceremonial books. Also Supreme will include a self-addressed pre-paid envelope to return the council's ceremonial books to Supreme. If the council cannot find their books, there will be instructions on what to do and what the cost will be. At the Summer Leadership Meeting all district deputies were provided a list of all councils in the State that were issued first degree ceremonial books. They were to conduct a personal inventory of each council that was issued first degree ceremonial books and provide me with a report on this inventory. I have received replies from about a third of the district deputies. The goal was to have every council that was issued first degree ceremonial books be inventoried and be ready to immediately respond to Supreme's requirements as its pertains to returning the old books, informing Supreme that the council does not have any or a portion of the books, and paying for the lost ceremonial books. To the grand knights, if your books were not inventoried, please contact your district deputy immediately and have the inventory conducted. Wayne C. Hogan Wayne C. Gift Processing Center PO Box 9028 Pittsfield, MA Attention: Hurricane KATRINA Relief The Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus provided initial relief funds for the victims of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida today, and Knights of Columbus everywhere are being asked to donate to a special fund for hurricane relief efforts. Initial contributions of $10,000 each were made available to Knights of Columbus state councils in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, and Knights of Columbus members and the general public are asked to donate to a disaster relief fund administered by Knights of Columbus Charities. There are nearly 50,000 Knights in the tri-state area devastated by Katrina. In addition, more than 45,000 live in Florida, where Katrina delivered its initial blow before growing into a Category 5 hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico. All four states have been declared federal disaster areas by President Bush. Donors in the United States should make checks payable to Knights of Columbus Charities USA, Inc. and donors in Canada should make checks payable to Knights of Columbus Canada Charities, Inc. Message from Fr McGivney Guild Chairman At this year s Supreme Convention held in Chicago, the attendees had the wonderful opportunity to attend the debut of a new play entitled He Was Our Father. Written by playwright Dominican Father Peter John Cameron and staged by actors from the Blackfriars Repertory Company from New York, He Was Our Father was an artist's interpretation of the life of Father McGivney. The play in eight scenes touches upon the life of Father McGivney and the pastoral effect he had on the church and the community he served. The play was a wonderful opportunity to put to life the image of the man who founded our Order. His person, his voice, his influence, and his holiness came alive through the actor portraying him. It was a special opportunity to get to know him even more. The Fr McGivney Guild also plays an important role in making Father McGivney better known to us. The Guild helps us get to know Father McGivney in more. It also helps us spread the word about his life and his works. We thank all of those that have chosen to join the Guild. The spiritual heritage of Father McGivney is his precious gift to the Knights of Columbus. We owe it to him and our church to share his gift with those we meet and with those we work. Your membership in the Guild helps towards that Guild. As you must know, joining the Guild doesn t cost a thing. When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note "I've circled this block for 10 years. If I don't give you a ticket I'll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation." The items come from the "Hospital Equipment Lend Program (HELP)" run by the councils. "Picnic Choir" consisting of Auburn Council 3598 knights and their families singing military and Americana songs at the parish picnic for Sept. 11 observance. Dave Appel held his first District 8 meeting at his home west of Colfax. DD Dave felt it was important for members and their families to get to know each other and what better place than a relaxing picnic in the country. Colfax Council 1488 hosted the picnic. Thomas and Courtney Moore visiting Pope Benedict XVI in Rome Italy August Thomas Moore, who belongs to Council of Jesus, # brought with him his first degree Knight of Columbus rosary that he got from the Council 676 degree team. But the life of the child takes precedence over all opinions. One cannot invoke freedom of thought to destroy this life The role of law is not to record what is done, but to help in promoting improvement. It is at all times the task of the State to preserve each person's rights and to protect the weakest. In order to do so the State will have to right many wrongs. The law is not obliged to sanction everything, but it cannot act contrary to a law which is deeper and more majestic than any human law: the natural law engraved in men's hearts by the Creator as a norm which reason clarifies and strives to formulate properly, and which one must always struggle to understand better, but which it is always wrong to contradict. Human law can abstain from punishment, but it cannot declare to be right what would be opposed to the natural law, for this opposition suffices to give the assurance that a law is not a law at all It must in any case be clearly understood that whatever may be laid down by civil law in this matter, man can never obey a law which is in itself immoral, and such is the case of a law which would admit in principle the liceity of abortion. Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play. "Here's a copy of the service," he said impatiently. "But, you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances." After the homily, the pastor paused and said, "We are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up." At that moment, the substitute organist played "The Star Spangled Banner." And that is how the substitute became the regular organist!
