Also, at 10:00am, students delivered a Live Red Rose, the symbol of the March for Life, to each member of the Legislature, the Governor, and Lieutenant Governor. About 2,000 Marchers arrived in cars, vans, and about 20 buses from throughout the State of Washington to pray and One Saturday, January 8, prior to the start of the Regional meeting in Spokane, State Deputy Pat Maloney presented a check from PFH to Father Steve Dublinski, the Parochial Vicar for the Diocese of Spokane. Through this gift, the Diocese will be able to partially fund the education of candidates for the priesthood. Similar checks were also presented to the Archdiocese of Seattle and the Diocese of Yakima. These funds are generated by donations to local Councils and Assemblies of the Knights, whose motto is "A March for Life January 19, 2005 Olympia, Washington (Continued on page 10) February, 2005 Edition John Wallace, State Advocate, Rob Roberts, PSD, FMFD, Carl Anderson, John Alexy, State Recruitment Ch, Jay Quinn, Former State Pro-Life Ch, and Wayne Hogan, IPSD Spokane Diocese PFH Check Presentation Washington State Council Officers presenting the check to Father Steve Dublinski, From left to right are Wayne Hogan (IPSD), John Wallace (State Advocate), Pat Maloney (State Deputy), Father Steve Dublinski, Karl Hadley (State Secretary), Don McBride (State Warden) and John Walker (State Treasurer). penny a day, a prayer a day for vocations". Father Dublinski, representing Bishop Skylstad who was traveling that weekend, expressed the Bishop s gratitude for the continuing support from the Knights. Members continue to offer support through letters and prayer for the individuals they are sponsoring. "Every Seminarian Supported" is a watchword that continues to be professed by the KC s in Washington. The councils in the state have very nearly achieved that worthy goal this year.

2 Page 2 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin February, 2005 Message From the State Deputy Pat Maloney This month in the bulletin, you will see an article titled - Do We Have As Much Sense As a Goose? I am certain that many of you have seen this article before in print. It is a good short piece that breaks down the simple lessons taught by a flock of geese as they fly south for the winter. I encourage you to take time to read the article. You may want to clip it out, save it, and refer to it some times. I hope that if it hasn t already done so, it might strike a chord with you as it has done with me. I am not certain who the author is. However, it is a simple study on the benefits of working together in pursuit of meeting the goals of the group. I think that it is very appropriate. The lessons shared in this article are simple: 1) People, who share a common direction and a sense of community, make things happen; 2) People get much more accomplished when they work together; 3) It often pays to take turns doing the hard jobs; 4) Words of encouragement are needed - encouragement helps invigorate and enables others to carry on; 5) If we have the simple sense of a goose, we will continue to stand by and support each other. Each month when I sit down to write this letter for the bulletin, I think of the many things that we have accomplished as the Knights of Columbus of the Washington State Jurisdiction. I am certain that you will agree, we have flown great distances. As I write, I start to look ahead and I sometimes feel a little overwhelmed when looking at all of the things that are left to be accomplished through the remainder of the fraternal year especially to get to where we should be. Some times I think that flying South with a flock of geese might be a lot easier. It=s usually during this time that I get a positive call or positive note from one or two of our grand knights or district deputies (a little honking maybe?) about what they are doing or some of the successes that they are be having. Then things seem to feel a little more comfortable, things seem to come together and stuff doesn t seem too daunting. The lessons about flying geese relate not only to us as Knight of Columbus, or as members of a Family, or as workers or employees of a larger company. But it also pertains to the way we live our lives as members of the one Body of Christ. Never hesitate taking the opportunity to say Thank You to the members and families of the Knights of Columbus of our state. All of you know that there is a shortage of quality time available these days. As we live our life, and we continue to share with each other what we do as Knights and Catholics, we continue to help each other carry on and grow stronger in the faith that we love and share. During the remainder of the fraternal year, our efforts and sacrifices will continue to help us grow strong. I have no doubt that our hard work will result in benefits many times over. It was great to see many of you at the regional meetings this past month. We had a lot of good feedback and some pretty good discussions from all of those that were there in attendance. The traveling troupe of state officers and program chairman appreciate hearing back from those members that were there in attendance. Thanks for braving the weather and roads to come out and participate. I want to thank the Spokane Council 10534, Richland Council 3307, Chehalis Council 1550, Centralia Council 1758 and Everett Council 763 for hosting the meetings. I also want to thank FS Training Consultants Mark Davis and Dave Konzek for again conducting some very productive seminars. If you were unable to attend the meetings, please see your District Deputy. He should be able to fill you in on the information that was presented. At the regional meetings, Membership Director Don McBride and Retention Chairman Andy Kraemer did a good job in presenting the Shining Armor Program. We continue to hear about the successes other councils have had with this program. The program is well crafted and it flat out works! If you would like more information about the program, contact Don or Andy. They will help you get started. 3 February, 2005 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin Page 3 Invite Chaplains to State Convention in May By Father K. Scott Connolly MOST REVEREND ALEXANDER J. BRUNETT STATE CHAPLAIN The state convention in Tukwila is just around the corner, and if you would like your chaplain to attend, you may want to extend the invitation to him now. I know that it is particularly difficult for priests to get away on the weekend. However, if we fail to ask our chaplain to attend, we know for certain he will be unable to go. It never hurts to ask, and it always goes a long way to foster our relationship as Knights of Columbus in solidarity with our priests and bishops. I extend this invitation to our councils in the Tukwila area in particular, as we will celebrate our convention in the Tukwila, just south of the Emerald City of Seattle. There will be a mass offered by Bishop Skylstad at 5:00 pm on Friday, May 13 followed by a dinner hosted by the local Knights of Columbus. Even if our chaplains are unable to make the entire weekend, at least we can invite them to come to that Friday evening liturgy and welcome all of the state officers and the knights present for the convention. It never hurts to make the offer as palatable as possible, for example, perhaps your council could offer to pay for the priest substitute who would need to come that weekend for the liturgy. You could even suggest helping to find a substitute priest for the weekend if your pastor is open to that suggestion. Oftentimes, he would be more than happy to participate in some of our ac- tivities, but the difficult task of finding a replacement can be so overwhelming that we do not make the attempt. I extend this invitation to all of our chaplains as well. Please consider making the effort to be present for our state convention. We will have a variety of activities available specifically for you as priest and chaplains during the course of the weekend. In addition to the Mass on Friday evening, we will have a luncheon specifically for priests on Saturday afternoon and a celebration of the Eucharist on Sunday morning to conclude our time together. You are most welcome to the banquet on Saturday evening to help join in the celebration of another fraternal year of the Knights of Columbus in the state of Washington. Your presence among the Knights of Columbus is always deeply appreciated and will make a difference in their lives as well as your own. If you have further questions or need assistance, please do not hesitate to call. You can reach me at my address (ViceChaplain@kofc-wa.org). We will see you at the convention May 13-15, If you would like a registration form, please me, and I will make sure to get one to you. Yours In Christ, THE VERY REVEREND K. SCOTT CONNOLLY STATE VICE-CHAPLAIN Father Scott Very Rev. K. Scott Connolly State Deputy s Message Continued (Continued from page 2) gaging your new first degree members in recruiting and program attendance. Try it you ll like it! I trust that all councils are gearing up for our Membership Blitz coming up shortly after Easter. As you know this year Lent starts a little earlier than usual and Easter subsequently falls in March. We want to make certain that we are engaging all councils in this membership effort this Spring. We ve had successful membership drives in the past and we want to make this one equally successful. With five months left in the fraternal year, there are a number of councils that have already attained Star council status. If your council is not there yet, there is plenty time to achieve the goals that you should have set at the beginning of the fraternal year. If any of the state officers can help you, please do not hesitate to ask. Vivat Jesus! Pat Maloney Your State Deputy

4 Page 4 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin February, 2005 Message from General Program Director Brothers, I want to thank all of you for attending the recent Regional meetings. At the meeting I covered the status of all of your council reports. I also stated that now is the time for every council to check on your point total for your 1000 point club. This is critical if you want to make 1000 points by May1st. Please contact me either by or phone call and I will be happy to give you your current point total. Remember it is still not too late to turn in any missing or late Service Program reports. I also reminded every council on the need to submit your Fraternal Survey report by January 31. This report is critical to Supreme. Please be assured that I or the State Deputy will be contacting you if we do not see a copy of your Fraternal Survey by the 31 st. I also reminded every council that we are approaching that time of the Fraternal Year when we should be thinking about submitting an application for one or all of the State Program awards. Please contact me with any question or concerns on submitting an application for these reports. We still have over 4 ½ months until the Convention and over 5 months until the end of this Fraternal year there is still time to make your goals!!! Vivat Jesus! Mike Bunney General Program Director Message from Vocations "Every Seminarian Supported" is now just about reality for Knights in Washington State Council. Through your generosity, I have been able to assign about 20 seminarians to Councils for support since September. "Just about" is the key - there are still two seminarians for whom I do not have a committment of aid through the RSVP program. We are, however, doing rather well with more than 90 candidates for the priesthood and the consecrated life of a nun being supported. If your Council or Assembly is considering sponsoring someone, please contact me directly. It is my task to "level out the playing field", ensuring that additional funding is found for those least supported. Diocesan vocations offices are not always aware of the ever changing and increasing level of support by Knights. Duane L. Vincent FDD PFN PGK Chairman for Vocations/PFH/RSVP vocations@kofc-wa.org Message from KCIC Chairman It was great seeing all the Grand Knights, District Deputies and Chairmen during the Regional Meetings this past month. I m sure you realized that there are a few items to be completed in the upcoming months (change that word few to a lot ). There is no doubt that all of your Councils will come out as winners. One of those items that would help is selecting a KCIC Chairman for your Council for the upcoming year even if you may not be the Grand Knight after June. The reason for having a Chairman in place before the Convention in May is he will need to decide if the Council will order a case of assorted cards to be picked up at the Summer Meeting in July. The assorted case is a great way to get started in selling Christmas cards, and they are at a discounted price. There are Councils who still owe for Christmas cards from this past season. Please check your records. Call me if you don t know what the Council owes kcic@kofc-wa.org Thanks, John M. Wallace KCIC Chairman SCHOLARSHIPS The long history of the partnership between the Knights of Columbus and Catholic education dates back to Over the years the Order has remained a staunch ally of institutions of learning, of parents and of students through a well-developed and well-financed series of undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships. In addition to Supreme Council programs, some state and local councils offer independent scholarship programs. Requests for information or applications, regarding United States and Canadian scholarships, should be directed to: Director of Scholarship Aid Knights of Columbus PO Box 1670 New Haven, CT (203) Requests can also be sent to: info@kofc.org Scholarship applications are sent via postal service, so please be sure to include a current mailing address. If you are entering your freshman year of college, considering attending a catholic college or university within the United States and are a member, child of a member, wife of a member or a Columbian Squire, you should apply for a scholarship. Applications are available after October 1st of each year and are to be filed by March 1st, to be considered for the coming school year.

5 February, 2005 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin Page 5 Whew! We had a hectic month staying ahead of snow and ice storms en route to the Winter Regional Meetings in Spokane, Richland, Centralia, and Everett. I hope you all found them as rewarding as I did. The best part was the involvement and discussion between the councils that attended. Some great ideas were shared, both in the areas of membership and programs. If your council was one of the few that couldn t be there, you missed a very engaging and informative day. One of the enjoyable aspects was being able to present the winners of the incentive drawings for participants in the October Share the Experience Blitz. Three lucky councils took home beautiful metal silhouettes of Mary and Jesus. The winners, in order of presentation, were Holy Apostles Council in East Wenatchee; Holy Spirit Council in Kennewick; and St. Joseph Council 4782 in Vancouver. Don t forget, you have another chance to win coming up by turning in your report of spring Blitz participation by April 30, Another upcoming incentive award is the pursuit of the elusive Contest of Champions awards. A beautiful framed print on canvas, Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus with Angels (often called Our Lady of Angels) has been obtained for the councils achieving the top net gain and percentage of goal in the state. Smaller framed prints will be awarded to the leaders in each of the five size divisions. As promised last month, we also were able to find out who were the lucky (and dedicated) winners of the prize for achieving 100% of their council or district membership quotas by December 31, The following Grand Knights will soon be receiving their Knights of Columbus jackets: Jim Sofka, GK, Council No. 829 Bellingham, 140% (net gain 7) Ron Christian, GK, Council No Chewelah, 100% (net gain 5) Gary Chesnutis, GK, Council No Camas-Washougal, 100% (net gain 6) Message from Membership Chairman Ron Kimball, GK, Council No Richland, 138.5% (net gain 18) Robert Buendia, GK, Council No Bothell, 100% (net gain 8) Richard Gendron, GK, Council No Federal Way, 160% (net gain 8) Lloyd Qually, GK, Council No Kent, 140% (net gain 7) Richard Weber, GK, Council No Spokane, 100% (net gain 5) John Buckley, GK, Council No Camano-Stanwood, 100% (net gain 7) Rich Jacobs, GK, Council No Colbert, 120% (net gain 6) James Hudak, GK, Council No Prosser, 100% (net gain 5) Roger Devaney, GK, Council No Spokane, 280% (net gain 14) Bob Sanchez, GK, Council No Shoreline, 171.4% (net gain 12) Brian Lampe, GK, Council No Kirkland, 140% (net gain 7) Dan Lee, GK, Council No Covington, 100% (net gain 5) Manny Keller-Scholz, GK, Council No Spokane, 120% (net gain 6) Wade Walden, GK, Council No East Wenatchee, 140% (net gain 7) Ken Robinson, GK, Council No Renton, 120% (net gain 6) Ed Miller, GK, Council No Granite Falls, 100% (net gain 5) Joseph Champagne, GK, Council No Leavenworth (new council, net gain 8) Jeff Schumacher, GK, Council No Seattle (new council, net gain 55) Daniel Donahue, DD#1 Deacon Bill Loranger, DD#10 Del Treichel, DD#16 Larry McKeever, DD#20 Lee Lutovsky, DD#26 Ben Workman, DD#27 Don t forget, you all can join them in pursuit of the next part of that incentive prize the book, Faith and Fraternalism, personally inscribed by the Supreme Knight for your achievement in leading your council to 200% of its membership quota by June 30, Be sure to check out the State Council website ( under Program Chairs => Membership. Lewis on Monday, January 10 th. We should all be very proud of this Assembly and the work it is doing on "Operation Knightflight". It is a very worthy project the troops really appreciate our thoughts and the letters they get from the kids from our local schools. The support from some of local parishes have really helped. We can use more help from our members to go around to all councils and encourage more financial support so that we can continue this project until our troops return home to us. Contact Martin Berndt or George Turk for more information. Message from State Advocate Worthy Grand Knight, If you are considering a review of the Council bylaws or you can not locate a copy, or maybe the Council never had bylaws, there is an easy way to resolve this problem. Sample copies of the latest revision of the standard set of by-laws with clear directions on how to make changes is available. Send for a sample copy with the Council Number and an address to: kofcwallace@comcast.net Thanks, John M. Wallace State Advocate Unless souls are saved, nothing is saved; there can be no world peace unless there is soul peace. World wars are only projections of the conflicts waged inside the souls of modern men, for nothing happens in the external world that has not first happened within a soul. Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Message from State Treasurer EXEMPLIFICATION FUND RE- MINDER TO GRAND KNIGHTS AND FINANCIAL SECRETARIES As we arrive at the beginning of the second half of the fraternal year, I wish to remind all of the need to keep your exemplification fund payment current in order to avoid having me send you a billing. Let me outline what the fund is for. The exemplification fund was established to be used to pay partial expenses of the Ceremonial Team when they administer the 3 rd Degree to your new members. When a new member is initiated into the 1 st Degree of the Order, you need to send an $8.00 payment to the State Council to cover the costs of the 3 rd Degree. A new member is one who is not a transfer, re-admission, reactivation, re-initiate, priest or seminarian. (You need not send $8.00 for the aforementioned). Before this system was established the District Deputy was required to collect from each individual when he showed up for the 3 rd Degree ceremony. When you send the $8.00 per new member, you should also send a copy of the Council Monthly Statement you receive from Supreme. I have no way of knowing who are actually new members as the only report I receive from Supreme is the monthly membership report. (It only shows me the total number of new members and not the re s that are shown on your report. Please help me by sending a copy of the statement so that I do not have to send a notice that you did not make the proper payment. I have sent notices to some councils indicating that your have payments past due from previous years. Please review the notice and make the necessary adjustments if needed and then send the check to the State Secretary. Hopefully I can get all the old past dues completed, so that when I turn the books over to the next State Treasurer they will be up to date. Thank you for your cooperation. If you have any questions, please contact me. John Walker State Treasurer

Columbus Charities A GREAT Council Fund Raiser! Is your council looking for an easy fund raiser? There are many Councils in the State of Washington that work hard and trying to discover a project that will help them raise some funds to support or help finance their many charitable works. STOP! - DON T LOOK ANY FURTHER The State Council has a program to do just that - and it s called Columbus Charities Program! The Columbus Charities program is not only designed to raise money for several charitable programs in Washington, but it is also designed to help all Washington councils that participate. Do you know that 40% of the money that is raised by each council - that is - 40 cents for each $1 ticket sold - is returned to the participating council for their use in charitable projects? And - if your council achieves its quota - which is one book per member - your council receives an additional bonus. In the past 24 years, this program has returned nearly $900,000 to local councils. This money is used to fund many charitable projects each council participates in. Not only do the monies raised from this effort go back to the councils - but several important charities in the state benefit from this project effort. These included Special Olympics, Cancer Care Centers and several Kidney centers all around Washington. This program, which has been around since the late 1970's, is the major charitable project promoted across the state each year. Columbus Charities raffle tickets are sold for $1.00. Each ticket purchased entitles the buyer a chance of winning a number of money prizes offered. Winners are announced at the annual drawing in May. And the chances of winning are better than Lotto! If your council is looking for a fund raiser - look no further than this project. It s an easy and popular project to promote within your council and within your community. If you do not have tickets for sale yet you will shortly! If you have any questions or concerns about this project, please contact David Tufts, our state s Columbus Charities Chairman or your District Deputy. When Mrs. McEntee was introduced by her daughter-in-law the ProLife Marchers erupted with applause in recognition for her years as the President of the March for Life and her dedication as one of Washington's leaders in the ProLife movement. Reverend Michael McDermott, pastor of St Charles Borromeo Church, said the opening prayer. Wayne C. Hogan, Immediate Past State Deputy, led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. This was the fourth consecutive year that he led the Pledge. It was followed by introductions, which included the acknowledgement by Mrs. McEntee of Carl Anderson, father of Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson, the attending Legislators and speakers. Also, in attendance were Sister Sharon Park, O.P., Executive Director of the Washington State Catholic Conference; Reverend Derek Lappe, Pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas in Camas and the Former Friar of Washington State Squires; John Wallace, State Advocate; Everett 'Rob' Roberts, Past State Deputy and FMFD; Jack Newman, PGK, FDD, FMFD; Jay Quinn, former State Pro-Life Chairman; Paul and Jean Nollette, International Family of the Year for 1995; Catholic priests, plus hundreds of Knights who were proudly carrying their council's banners. For more information visit The Month of February February is the month during which we celebrate St. Valentine's Day. It's a special day that we traditionally remember special people in our lives by saying "Hello!", by having intimate conversations with them, by writing letters to them, or by doing something for them to show that they are special. This is probably something that many of us have done since we were young. How we chose to make this gesture is an expression of love. It is one of the many times during the year that we have the opportunity to express our love for that someone special. When I think about this, I am reminded of the words from a letter of St. Paul to his congregation in Corinth. This is one of my favorite readings. When you read it or hear it, one might picture this as a Valentine s Day type letter and expression of his love to this group. I think that these words of St. Paul are appropriate in commemoration of the celebration of love. Love is patient. Love is kind. Love is not jealous. It does not put on airs; It is not snobbish. Love is never rude. It is not self seeking; it is not prone to anger. Love does not rejoice in what is wrong, but rejoices in what is with the Truth. There is not limit to Love s forbearance; there is no limit to its Trust, to its hope, or to its power to endure. Then know that there in the end are three things that last: Faith, Hope and Love, and the greatest of these is Love.

14 Page 14 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin February, 2005 Some Thoughts on Council Meetings Some Thoughts on Council Meetings An article was written a while ago about the organizational structure of councils and council meetings. The purpose of the article was to provide a little guidance to councils regarding meetings and to help councils make meetings more productive, more vibrant and better attended. An excerpts of this article is found below. How many members can be expected to attend meetings? Most councils hold between official business meetings a year. A reasonable attendance goal is to expect 15% 20% of your membership at meetings. If you are not having this number at meetings, consider changing things some to revitalize your meeting attendance. Here are ten suggestions targeted toward achieving better attendance at meetings. 1. Meeting Day & Time There will always be conflicts, but make certain that your council has selected a day and time that isn t in conflict with church, or community activities that a majority of your members might attend. If you meet on Saturday or Sunday,, you may want to consider whether this conflicts with family time. 2. Communicate Your Meeting Schedule - During the year, ask your members to make a commitment to attend a minimum of one or two meetings per year. Consider using your phone tree to call your members reminding them of your monthly meeting. Don t call the night before call several days ahead of time to remind them. 3. Meeting Place & Accommodations Are you meeting at a convenient place for your members? If your council covers a large geographical area or several parishes, consider rotating your meeting place to make it convenient for all members. Start your meeting with a little social time followed by business. Do not allow your meeting to go any longer than an hour to an hour and a half. Plan to get the meeting over so members can make it home at a reasonable time. Have you considered serving a meal at your meting? Or considered having a pot luck meeting inviting the wives? This is a popular means to get good involvement. 4. Meeting Agenda & Deportment Do you have a meeting agenda to follow? Nothing keeps a meeting moving like having a good agenda. It can be hand written or follow the one provided by Supreme to all GK s. Use Roberts Rules to conduct your meeting but be flexible and have some fun. 5. Involve Membership in Meeting Good GK s and Good leaders will not stand up in front of the membership and do all of the talking. Appoint chairmen in each of the 5 service program areas. This automatically gets 5 more members to the meeting. Allow your chairmen to talk during the meeting reporting on what has happened, what is currently happening and what is planned in the future. This process trains future leaders and should result in not having some of the members to serve in the same position for 3 5 years. 6. Above All - Avoid Committee Work at Meetings Nothing stretches out a meeting like doing committee work during the meeting. This includes planning and sending around sign-up sheets for volunteer assignments. Sometimes this can t be avoided but most of the time it can be avoided. Do planning and pre-planning with a small committee outside of the normal meeting. Don t hold your members hostage to something that can be accomplished by a few men outside the normal meeting. 7. Lecturer Programs Does you council have an active Lecturer? It doesn t take much other than a little creativity and effort to look around your community to invite someone to come and talk at one of your meetings. Consider local law enforcement people, a teacher, a local non-profit agency, your mayor, an estate planner, a gardener, etc. Don t be afraid to spice up the meeting with an interesting speaker. 8. Keep Everyone Informed - When 70% 90% of your members do not attend meetings, you need to work at keeping them informed with your monthly newsletter. Don t always lecture about not attending meetings or about how many people show up for a project. Be informative about what has happened, what is happened and what will be happening. Give them the facts, especially about a recent project. Be a cheer leader and let them know what a great organization they belong to. Don t forget to congratulate members on Birthdays, Anniversaries, promotions, birth announcements, etc. Don t forget about your Family of the Month or the Knight of the Month. 9. Get Acquainted As parishes and councils continue to grow, it s difficult to know all of your members. Call you new members their first few months and invite them to meetings. Make them feel welcome. Get them used to coming to your meetings where they feel welcome and enjoy themselves and remember not to take advantage of them and over work them. 10. Market Your Council Once or twice a month write a short announcement about your council and upcoming events and ask your pastor about placing that article in the bulletin. Start a scrap book and display it at meetings. Display your scrapbook at pancake breakfasts or fish fries so that others can see what you do, what projects you are involved in and what fun you have. A little marketing and publicity never hurts!

Intensive care was resumed and on June 9 Maria awoke from her coma. Six days later, her twins were born. Los Angeles doctors had thought all three would die; obviously God had other plans. February 20 Research using adult stem cells is years ahead of embryonic stem cell research and hold greater promise. No numan being has yet been cured of a disease through the use of embryonic stem cells whereas adult stem cells have already cured thousands. Stem cell expert Rev. Tadeusz Pacholcyzk, Ph.D. February 27 Scientific research shows that a week old unborn child experiences a much more intense pain than older infants, children or adults because its nerve fibers are closer to the skin. Yet despite congressional requirements that pain be minimized when livestock are slaughtered and there are numerous provisions to prevent pain to laboratory animals, no such protection is currently required for unborn human beings who undergo the hideous partial abortion procedure. (The Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act has been introduced into both houses of the U.S. Congress to ensure that women seeking an abortion are gully informed regarding the pain experienced by their unborn child.) * From National Right to Life Choose Life Pamphlet Suggested Prayers* February 6 For those who work in the pro-life movement that they may continue to be the salt and light by nourishing their spiritual roots, we pray. 16 Page 16 Knights of Columbus Washington State Council Bulletin February, 2005 Do We Have As Much Sense As A Goose? Do We Have As Much Sense As A Goose? When you look up into the sky and see geese flying, you probably notice that they are flying in a V formation. You may be interested in knowing what scientists have discovered about the way that they fly. It has been learned that as each bird flaps it s wings, it creates an uplift for the bird 1mmediately following. By flying in a V formation, the whole flock adds at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew on it s own. THOUGHT #1: People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker & easier because they are traveling on the thrust of another! Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag & resistance of trying to go it alone. It quickly gets back in formation to take advantage of the power of the bird immediately in front of it. THOUGHT #2: If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those who are headed the same way we are going! When the lead goose gets tired, he rotates back in the V formation & another goose takes the lead. THOUGHT #3: It pays to take turns doing hard jobs, either with people or with geese flying south! The Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. THOUGHT #4: We need to be careful about what we say when we honk from behind. We need to be careful when we speak works of encouragement! Encouragement helps! Fionally, when a goose gets sick or is wounded & it falls out of formation, two geese fall out of formation & follow the wound goose down to protect him. They stay with him until he is either again ready to fly or until he is dead. They then launch out on their own or with another formation to catch up with the original group. THOUGHT #5: If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other during times like this!
